The Athenaeum has long been at the centre of Bury St Edmunds life. Originally a grand private home, it has since played host to society balls, readings and lectures by literary giants such as Charles Dickens and William Thackeray.

Today, the elegant, Georgian, chandeliered Ballroom is an ideal setting for wedding ceremonies and receptions. This ornate and impressive space is complete with a grand, high ceiling, a balcony and a sweeping staircase for that fairy-tale entrance and as the perfect backdrop for magical photographs.

The Athenaeum offers five versatile spaces that can be hired individually or you can hire the whole venue exclusively: The Old Billiards Room at the front of the property is perfect for ceremonies for up to 60 guests. You can also use The Lounge (max capacity 70) and The Reading Room (max capacity 40) upstairs as a more intimate space for smaller gatherings. Alternatively you can choose our grand, Georgian Ballroom located on the ground floor at the back of the property with a maximum capacity of 180.
