I've only had my ring since end of May but the section of the ring that is on the inside of my hand is pretty much down to yellow gold now. Has anyone elses needed to be re-dipped so soon and how much does it cost to get fixed? I was talking to H2B about it and was really wondering whether I want to have a white gold wedding ring because I don't want to have the faf of having to get it fixed every 6 months but having a white gold engagement ring and a yellow gold wedding ring wouldn't look right would it?
CommentAuthorStinky87
I have a white gold engagement ring also, it does tarnish but its only about £50 to get it replated. have you tried cleaning it as often is not actually come off but it needs a clean? mine came up a treat when i did that.
CommentAuthorOfficially Mrs M
mine was £25 fo re-dipped with the High Street jewler that belong to samuel. I had to have mine done 3 days after i got it as there was a chip in it from when hubby picked it up.
i then had it done 6 months later as the quality of the re-dipping wasn't good enough and then it didn't get done for 2 years and it was fine, i do take it off for the shower and at night though

Yeah I have tried cleaning it, its still yellow on the inside. I don't want to have to pay £100 every 6 months to get both the rings replated, its just a lot of money when I could just have a yellow gold ring. I thought it would stay white longer.
CommentAuthorJennyY
See thats sounds better, my ring is from the same shop and if it lasts 2 years and cost £25 then that would be loads better. I would have prefered a yellow gold ring anyway but it was a surprise ring and I now absolutely love it. WHen you had it done after 6 months did you take it back to the shop you got it from or another one? My friend sent hers to Dubai to get it done and hers has lasted years which is why I thought mine would last longer than 6 months.
if you take them off when you do anything like cleaning they do last much longer. It should only be around £25 per ring

This is where my problem is, when ever I take any of my jewellery off I lose it so I tend to leave them all on, its only the section on the inside of my hand that has decoloured so no one else can see it but I know its done it.
CommentAuthorShazk
I only paied around £20 when had mine done and i think with white gold you can never tell how long it will last i had my engagement ring since july it fine, i have another ring i had for 9 years thats fine but the one i had for 2 years really needs re dipping and i wear them every day (never taker enganement off) so i think it depends on the ring to be honest xx

Mine is white gold. I'm fairly lucky and have had it for 20 months and had it re-dipped once; and TBH that wasn't really necessary. However, it will probably need re-doing every 12-18 months I think. But, I am getting my wedding band custom-made by a jeweller in Hatton Garden, and they have agreed to re-dip both for free for life; so, look at getting your wedding band through a local jeweller and see if they will also agree to do this.
That said, I am thinking about eventually having a replica made in either palladium or platinum, as I don't like the idea of having to have my rings re-plated every year, and would rather have something more hard-wearing that will keep it's colour.

I have an 18ct white gold e-ring. i got it in Dec 2009 and although it didn't need it I got it re-dipped for the wedding in May 2011. I have just had a very good look at it and it is still "white" all over. I only take my rings off if I am putting on hand cream, body moisturiser or suncream.

Also, I don't think it would look strange if you had a yellow gold wedding ring with an white e-ring. My wedding ring is white gold with bits of yellow gold.

I was thinking of looking at platinum but think it would be fairly pricey. I think I will go to my mums and borrow her wedding ring for a minute to see what they look like together, my E ring is only really thin so it might not be that noticeable they they are different?

If you're thinking about platinum, palladium is very very similar in terms of colour and durability, and about 1/3 of the cost. H2B is having a palladium band for this reason, and my second band will be palladium.

Have had my 18k white gold ring for 23 months now, and no signs of yellowing at all - got the diamond polished up just before the wedding which was free but the ring hasn't been re-dipped yet. I take it off when I get in the shower, wash the dishes and apply hand cream etc. We got ours in the jewellery quarter and when we got our wedding rings from another jeweller, they did comment that my e ring was good quality white gold - so I'm not sure if the carat has anything to do with it? When we chose the e ring I asked about re-dipping and they said the frequency depended on how you used the ring, with everyday average use they estimated 3-5 years and said re-dipping was about £20-30 a time :-)

Hi JennyY,
All white gold needs to be 'dipped' (Rhodium plated) once in a while. Depending on the type of white gold used this can be anything from 2 weeks to 2 years.
most jewellers will do it at least once free of charge and then will only charge you a small amount thereafter. £50 is way too much - you should be able to get it done for £25 in most towns in the UK or €30 if you're in Ireland.
If you don't want to have the hassle of getting it dipped every so often you might want to consider changing to Palladium - this never yellows as it is the same family of metals as Platinum but currently costs less than 18carat white gold. Its a fantastic metal and we can't understand why its so inexpensive - we're sure it will increase in price in the coming years.

My e-ring is platinum so cannot comment on mine, however, I have other 18ct white gold and diamond rings that I wore every day for years and they have never turned a yellow tinge. My sisters e-ring and wedding band are 18ct white gold and again, since she got her e-ring in November 2009 she has never had it redipped and it still looks "white".
I didn't realise white gold needed redipping. xx

It's funny reading this because I looked at my engagement ring the other day which is white gold and thought hmm I'm sure that looks a little yellow, I didn't realise this even happened. I'm going to take mine to where I got it now! Bit annoying have to do that but I have had the ring 16 months and am terrible at remembering to take it off when cleaning

mine done this about 3-4 months after having it, turns out it was chlorine and every day chemicals that turns it. its lasted abit longer this time because i took it off when i went swimming or at least when i remember to lol. think it will need redoing soon tho, but i dont know where to take it as h2b got it from argos and i dont think he got extended warranty on it. bit worried about wedding ring as thats white gold aswell

someone has already beat me to it but have you looked at palladium? It is exactly the same weight/metal/make up of platinum (even platinum rings aren't 100% platinum) but is 1/3 of the cost. Similar prices, might be a little pricier than White Gold, but has the metal make up of platinum so doesn't tarnish.
My ering is Plat, and am getting a plat wedding band so they match but other half is getting a palladium band made... Also if you go to jewellers like in jewellery quarter they can design something even cheaper... Put it this way, a ring in plat that OH saw was £2k+, made in palladium looking at £500 and at the jewellers £225! So definitely do some research as well, but if you go into any of samuels, jones or davis (all same company btw) they have plenty of plat and pall on show so you can see price differences.
However i do have to say the picture of the rose gold ring does look beautiful and you say your ering is quite thin itself, if you got a thin wedding band im sure it would look lovely... you can buy two tone gold jewellery anyway so don't see why the 2 rings would look any different! and i think its a lovely unqiue look!

I find this whole re-dipping thing very strange. In Norway if you get a white gold ring, it's white gold through and through and so NEVER needs any "re-dipping". To me it sounds like something the jewelers here in England have decided to do to siphon more money out of people... My engagement ring needed re-dipping within 3 months of purchase and wore off again almost immediatly grrrr. I'm going home to Norway for Christmas, so I'm gonna see about getting a new ring and recycling the band from this one Edit; I got a white gold ring when I was 15, 12 years later and it's still a shiny silvery colour- bought in Norway

My engagement ring will need re dipping before the wedding. It was bought in a jewellers in Venice so I obviously can't go to the shop I got it from lol. Will another jewellers still re dip it? X

I have a 9ct white gold half eternity ring that h2b bought me 4 Christmas's ago & I wear it everyday through cleaning, showering, swimming, hand creaming etc etc & I have never needed it dipped. I'm no expert in jewellery so I'm sorry if this is a stupid question but could this be because its 9ct & not 18ct?

I think it may depend on where you get it from, like I said before I have plenty of white gold rings that I have worn daily for years and they are still as shiny white/silver as if new and never needed redipping, they're all 18ct white gold and all come from Malaysia but apparently the metals come from Italy and obviously made up into jewellery in Malaysia.

Are you sure palladium can't be resized PinkWink? H2B has gone for palladium for his wedding ring, the sole reason that he went for this instead of titanium is the fact that unlike titanium palladium can be resized. I will be extremely annoyed if this is not the case.
Could do with the ring expert on here to confirm this, epecially as that is who we have ordered from!!!!

Palladium rings can be re-sized I done a lot of looking in palladium for my wedding ring as I not hear a lot about it, everywhere I looked on Internet it says palladium is hard to work with but can be re-sized and read lots of reviews from people that has had they palladium rings re-sized with no problem.

Palladium can absolutely be resized. It is a different process to other metals as they compress it, which means there is a risk that the ring can actually twist. Hubby had his ring resized down after the wedding as we were worried it would fly off when he shook his hands dry. Luckily his ring didn't twist and now his ring fits :)

My dad is a jeweller and it's only £10 to have it re rhodium plated, be careful shops don't try to rip you off! In terms of wearing a wedding ring that's yellow gold, that's fine but make sure it's the same carat as your engagement ring otherwise the lower carat will rub and scratch the other. Definitely do not wear Platinum or Palladium next to it, it will ruin it!! xx
