    Hey ladies,

My question is does anybody know the difference between Maid of Honour & Chief Bridesmaid or is there not a difference & this is the same role just with two different names!

So I always thought that Maid of Honour was there to attend to the Bride & the Chief Bridesmaid was there to look after all the other bridesmaids & get them ready etc. Now I am unsure as I have heard different things!

Anybody having both? Is it the same person/role?
Or know for certain the answer. Thank you x

    Found it...

" A Chief bridesmaid is the eldest of all the bridesmaids and she has the most responsibility to the bride, she also has to look after all the other bridesmaids. A Maid (or Matron) of honour is a married Chief bridesmaid. "

    At last... yey!! x

Ooh that's interesting. I have one BM and thought it'd be easier to call her MOH since I have no other BM's but she's not married so BM it'll stay!

and i thought the chief bridesmaid / maid of honour didnt have to be the oldest i thought it was the brides choice.. i'm more than likely wrong lol.. but like im having two.. one my best friend since i was knee high to a grasshopper and the other is msil2b who i do get on with very well, but im going to choose the one closest to me, there is only 2 years between them and my best friend does happen to be older but that wasnt the reason i maid her chief bridesmaid.. i made that choice based on the fact ive know her my whole life and we are very close ... my sil2b although i know im marrying her bro but she understands my choice cause ive only known her 2 years.. the bridesmaides are the brides choice ... the best man and ushers are the grooms choice... i know these days everyone just makes up their own rules unless you want to follow tradition, which is entirely the couples choice... xx

I thought they had different roles. I thought it was like Anastasia said in her first post.
And i thought maid of honour was unmarried and matron of honour if she is married.
Lol it's strange that we all have different ideas xxx

just got this of good old Wikipedia

The bridesmaids are members of the bride's party in a wedding. A bridesmaid is typically a young woman, and often a close friend or sister. She attends to the bride on the day of a wedding or marriage ceremony. Traditionally, bridesmaids were chosen from unwed young women of marriageable age.

The principal bridesmaid, if one is so designated, may be called the chief bridesmaid or maid of honor if she is unmarried, or the matron of honor if she is married. A junior bridesmaid is a girl who is clearly too young to be marriageable, but who is included as an honorary bridesmaid.

Often there is more than one bridesmaid: in modern times the bride chooses how many to ask. Historically, no person of status went out unattended, and the size of the retinue was closely calculated to be appropriate to the family's social status. A large group of bridesmaids provided an opportunity for showing off the family's social status and wealth. Today, the number of bridesmaids in a wedding party is dependent on many variables, including a bride's preferences, the size of her family, and the number of attendants her partner would like to have as well.

Now we know (and knowing is half the battle!)

I always thought that the maid of honour and the best man were there for the bride and groom, to make sure everything ran smoothly. The history I've always been told is that we have them as our closest unmarried relative of the same gender as a throw-back to when marriages cemented alliances and it didn't matter which ones got married as long as someone did. That's why the b, and moh made damn sure that the bride and groom showed up, otherwise it would be them!

It is very interesting. I never knew that about chief bridesmaid being the eldest, mine is my sister and age wise she's actually the middle one of the 3. She is already married but she threatened me with all sorts if I even thougt about calling her Matron of honour lol! x

My moh is my eldest bridesmaid but only as she is my closest sibling (we share a mum and were brought up by our mum whereas I share a dad with the other sister and she lives with our dad).

I don't think she is fussed if I call her my maid of honour or chief bridesmaid.

Haha I'm glad that history thing doesn't apply as he is having a best woman.

When I was my sisters BM, I was her CBM, I'm older than her. She's now my CBM, should she be MOH instead then? I always thought MOH was an American term and CBM was British. My sister announces to everyone she is the CBM.

My sis will be all of that lol, she's married, will be the one helping me get dressed (although think my best mate will too) and tbh I don't think my best mate really needs to be kept in line but my FG will need to be controlled which I was hoping my best mate could help with.
