Looking at my venue, the wedding price and reception is seperate & costing near on £1000, which is WAY more than I can even dream of coming up with for that alone. But after hunting around, they do civil weddings & reception for £550 .. But what does that mean exactly? I've searched & got that a man & woman can't have civil weddings, then got another saying its a non religious ceremony that a man & woman can have, but isn't recognised in a religious way. (IE Churches won't recognise the marriage) .. Im not religious & neither is OH. Can't find a straight answer anywhere & it's upsetting because my heart is set on this venue. Please help :)

    Wedding vows
You must exchange some formal wording if you’re getting married.

Discuss any other wording you want in the ceremony with the person conducting the wedding.

You don’t need to exchange vows for a civil partnership, but you can do so if you wish.

Civil ceremonies can include readings, songs or music, but must not include anything that’s religious - eg hymns or readings from the Bible.

Civil ceronmys can not be religious in anyway but you do have the set formal words however you do get options to what is said.
You can have readings, poems, music but they just can't be religious.
    I had a civil ceronmy :)

not really, but litteraly a civil ceremony can literally be going into the office with 2 witnesses signing the paper work done.

Church ceremonies tend to be longer because there will be hymns and prayers, and possibly a sermon. It's worth investigating the cost at your local parish church, as it might be less expensive than you think. I've known three couples this year who have had the wedding reception in the church and it has been a great way of keeping costs down.

Where you found something saying that men and women can't have a civil ceremony, you were possibly getting confused between a civil ceremony, which is a marriage with all religious elements removed, and a civil partnership, which is for same sex couples (until the new law comes into force).

It was the day that I became Mrs. Dixon.

A civil ceremony is what would usuallt take place in a registry office. You can have a civil ceremony at a hotel or other licensed venue and the registrar will attend for an extra fee. A civil partnership is a legal recognition of same sex couples which will give them certain rights that are given to married couples. A religious ceremony will inlcude hymns and prayers and be largely based around god and the influence that the church will have on you r marriage and what your marriage wil mean to the church. xx
