HOW MUCH?!?!?! have been looking about and most bands are around the £1000 mark!! i had only budgeted for about £300 for the entertainment. Looks like we are going to have to save up that little bit harder.

Cant believe how much they cost for around 4 hours entertainment and a free feed at buffet time.

Cant even find one thats near inverness so would have to pay for travel and accomodation for them too... :-(

I am dreading that too. It seems that down south these things cost a lot less but having talked to friends they have all paid around £1000 for a decent ceilidh band :-(

From an ex-musicians point of view.... there are quite a lot of people who need to be paid out of the money, and the equipment isn't cheap...

Our expenses for one wedding were around £400.

I know but to me the band make or break a good reception! i want someone who starts with the old traditional scottish dances (and calls them) then moves onto modern poppy/rocky/cheesy stuff.

I just want everyone to have a blooming good time and dance their socks off all night!

guess its worth the money but its just a bit of a shock it costs that much!

I'm having Seattle as my band and I think they offer celiedh as an option as well. My friends having Bahookie and they do a mix also. Both in Scotland and prepared to travel :-) x

Wow thanks for posting this, I've budgeted about £500 for entertainment and was also thinking of a ceilidh. Had no idea it was so expensive! Mmm might have to rethink the entertainment. Anyone have any ideas for cheaper alternatives? x

had a look at some of the bands mentioned and all seem excatly what i am looking for!
made an enquiry with a "booking agent" who told me they have a band local to me called Eclipse, ""and In January they appeared at a Wedding Entertainment showcases we held at theAltens Thistle and absolutely stormed the audience, securing the mostbookings of all the bands performing. They are excellent at both theceilidh (the keyboard player also plays the accordion amazingly) and popcovers.""

They normally cost £1400 but i can book them now for £1100 as they live near me! Am sorely tempted but still think its WAY TOO MUCH!

I have heard of Eclipse and have heard they are very good although have never heard them myself. I have also heard of Bahookie, mentioned by someone else, and again have heard they are good. I still agree that its a lot of money. My boss's husband has a band who do weddings etc (not a ceilidh band) and they make an absolute fortune - no joke. There must be cheaper ones around that are equally good but you will just have to work harder to find them. Try contacting the music schools and music departments at uni's. I studied at Aberdeen and I know that the music students formed bands and groups and were considerably cheaper to hire, but often just as talented xx

Another idea is to contact local schools of music that have school kids and young adults learning at, they tend to have a list of bands that have been formed by ex pupils of theirs or may know of some other bands in the local area through word of mouth. Also worth checking with your local pipe band too as some members may know of a friend that plays a fiddle, accordian, etc and could give you a source for a local band. Also pubs/clubs in your area that hire bands/singers for weekend gigs, they may be able to suggest a band and also maybe a chance to hear them live too. And lastly local young farmers groups tend to do fundraising gigs and have awards ceremonies and could possibly be another source for gaining a few band names that they have used. Worth a try. xx

No worries. Its a couple of years since I graduated so I don't really know anyone any more but honestly, the guys I knew were awesome! Aberdeen uni has a really vibrant Scottish Music scene and I'm sure there must be similar talents at RGU. Even if they have links with RGU College coz the senior kids are pretty good too xx
