Hey guys just wanted to check everyone's opinions on registering for a wedding gift list? You think it's a good idea? or a bit cheeky? Would you have one?

We're goin to ask for vouchers and have a little postbox for them to be put in. We've already set up home, so there's very little we need/want, but are planning on extending the family after the wedding! :)

We've got one. I think they are a good idea so thay guests don't duplicate gifts. We are making sure there is a range of prices- from 70p +. Also I hate giving money as a present- I find it unpersonal. We don't have our own place at the mo.

i think it's a good idea hun if you know what you want why not, it's better then people buying you things you dont particulary want or need because people will buy gifts anyway xx

Got an invitation to a work colleagues wedding through the post last week, it had a card in saying you could contribute to their honeymoon fund instead of a present. First time i've seen this. Not sure what I think of it, I'm really happy to do it for them but i'm not sure if I'd do it personally. Any opinions on that one?

We've done the honeymoon contribution a few times but found it really awkward. Definately not for our wedding!

we are also asking for contributions to the honeymoon fund as we are on a tight budget and would help us alot rather than getting "stuff" x
CommentAuthorPennylane
Yeah I think it's a good idea actually but some of my family are a bit too old school, i'm sure i'd get some disapproval if I tried it! shame cos I could be doing with help for that, it's a big expense I keep forgetting about when I'm adding up my budget!!! Thanks for all replies x

A gift list is a known for a wedding, and people kind of expect it, especially if they are loving friends who you have invited to your wedding, which in all accounts they should be!! My friends recently have registered for one at Debenhams, and one at Argos, so they got a range of prices. xxxx
CommentAuthorcandygirl1uk
we have said 'we look forward to your presence, not your presents, but if you want to give us a gift, contributions to out honeymoon would be appriciated' we're packing up our flat and travelling for 6 months, so a new toaster wouldn't help too much, and we've lived together so long now we dont need anything! I'd really just rather everyone come though than have them worry about presents. In fact I'm hating the idea of people giving me things more and more!
CommentAuthorKesha
I dont think its cheeky, who doesnt buy a gift when attending a wedding now a days? My sister got married years ago and back then there wasnt such a thing as a gift list and she ended up with 4 kettles, 2 toasters and about 3 plates sets! A lot of time and effort went into buying the gifts, but she just didnt need that many duplicates, and because its a 'gift' it ended up in a cupboard somewhere. I think its nice that someone has taken the time to make my life easier! I hate shopping for gifts and always wonder if its the 'right' thing. At least with a gift list you know the person wants/needs the item. We will have a gift list, its nowhere special, just argos, its affordable and its somewhere that I would shop.

we are doing the post box thing as well...

a few people i know have 2 wedding lists, 1 for big housing things that people can budget together for and an argos list for people with smaller budgets... Also some people have just asked for vouchers and money... :)
CommentAuthorKirsty
Think we are going to do a gift list where yet not sure maybe John Lewis or Debenhams!
CommentAuthorDaffy

CommentAuthorpouchi-loo
just going to allow people to do what they want. give present or give money, i dont mind
CommentAuthorCherryCoke_x
Honestly I feel a bit cheeky, but to be fair (as my mum told me lol) people will expect it so don't feel cheeky.
We're toying with the idea of asking for a donation towards the honeymoon to take a bit of the financial pressure off, and hopefully help us get our dream honeymoon :)

Ooops, I dont think I bought my sister a wedding present :O but then again she did get married whilst I was on peanuts and gave me about 2 months notice from getting engaged to getting married! Back to the subject, what is a gift list? surely this would make the chance of guests duplicating presents more likely.. :s or am I missing the point? x
CommentAuthorlala "mod" bunni
we are off to a wedding in 2 weeks .they didnt want gifts but we have had tee-shirts made for them which say ....mr **** and mrs***** had them had done by a graffitti artist in vegas ( the couple are going to vegas as part of there honymoon )
i didn't know you could do that.....i just fought it was only in america!!!!!! AMAZIN!!!! Everydays a school day lol. Anyway...now i know you can do it ....im deffo gonna do it!!!!! We've recently moved to a new house an cud do with quite a few things an then if my wedding guests buy me the essentials it leaves us more money for the honeymoon!!! :)

Roxii a gift list is something that you register with a shop. You go into a department store, e.g. debenhams, John Lewis etc, and you choose what you'd like to have, like a particular toaster, duvet set, wide screen tv :P, camcorder etc etc, and then a list gets compiled, and the guest choose off there what they want to buy one. Once one person has bought it, it can't be bought again. Like an amazon wishlist, if you have one of those. xxxx
CommentAuthorEmsy5000
we are having a list with lots of different prices on it and we are saying if people wont to contribute to our honeymoon then we are happy with that.

we are going to reg for a few things with argos, but are mainly just going to ask for money towards our honeymoon xx
cant wait to renew my vows, love my hubby sssssooooo much xx
CommentAuthorauntiewoo
If anyone asks us what we want, we are telling them argos vouchers. I have a house full of stuff already that I have to move from Wales to Essex-so I really could do without more! However, we will need to replace the big stuff! washing machine, fridge-freezer etc (and a new bed!) as mine are completely knackered-washing machine 20 years old, f/f 12 years! So, we can put vouchers towards replacing them!
CommentAuthorRoxii
Thanks jen, I think I get it now.. No offence to anyone doing that.. but isn't that a bit cheeky? lol.. (but then again, I like to buy things for myself, and never like people to buy me things anyway) I'd rather either not have gifts, or have thought gone into a gift rather than me saying "I want this or that.. ect" x

CommentAuthorlil miss sunshine
it all depends on weather you really need anything we did not need any thing so opted for cash/vouchers since we have replaced some stuff in our house ......... but it is really a personal preference
and now the next chapter
CommentAuthorNicsquared
I think we want a gift list - we have a home but a lot of our stuff has been collected over the years so will be nice to have new things that all match :) Anyone got recommendations for who to go with?
There are so many people out there who will tell you
what you can't do.
What you have to do is turn around and say, "watch me"!!
CommentAuthorMrsKisywisy
we would have registered for gifts (and still might for the 'old school guests', but we are asking for vouchers or money. we have everything we need!!
i have been toying with the idea of holiday vouchers or something.
registering is great as you shouldn't get more than one of an item and you'll like what you do get!! no more disgusting pea green crockery!! lol
I'M MARRIED!!!
I am now Mrs Bananaman!!!!

we didnt ask people for honeymoon contributions as such. we have given them the option to contribute towards excursions instead so they arent paying for our holiday as such. We have also done a debenhams gift list as personally i never give vouchers so wanted to give people the choice of what to do

CommentAuthorpennieb-MrsRiley
We've done a Debs gift list, but are reconsidering the gift card option on there as we don't want to find ourselves stuck with nothing else that we want to buy!
Now, finally, Mrs Riley

We are still debating between all these possibilities, h2b is leaning towards the honeymoon fund option. I'm completely unsure (not very helpful I know) Generally speaking most people who attend your wedding will be wanting help, bring a gift or feel like they are contributing in some way be it to a fund or a gift list... So really what you feel comfortable with :)
I think gift lists are a good idea because who really wants 5 toasters? At least that way if people want to buy a gift they can choose something for you that you actually want :)
Either way with a polite note in the invitation saying that you don't *expect* a gift etc, but if people want to buy something you have a gift list at such-n-such (JL is very popular amongst the weddings we have been to)
xx
CommentAuthorTori-Mrs.Mitchell2b
we already have a flat and everything that goes along with it (well i do) so there no point asking for gifts that will just end up on the bay of e and and thanks to my mother im out of cupboard space to. had 2 weddings in the last month one asking for vouchers or money towards honeymoon and had a gift list at debenhams, i see no problem with either, what ever going to be more worthwhile to you both as a couple. thats why we opting for thomas cook vouchers but going to put a list of excursions/things we will be doing so people know where there money going. i.e romantic meal for 2, water sports etc. but will word it on the invations that this is optional and asking people for little donations as times are hard and dont want anyone bracking the bank lol xx
CommentAuthorchubblywubbly
we have just accepted an offer on our house so we will prob be in our new house a few months before our wedding so we have decided to do a NEXT gift list (most of our friends and family know im obsessed with shopping at next!! lol) so we can have new things like kettle, toaster etc..as its a new house why not get new things for it??
i didnt think about argos one..may have to look into that one for little yet cheaper things :) thinking bout it i would prob prefere just argos vouchers and scrap the next one!!!
i think people would rather like to know what to get you for a gift as many people struggle with ideas of what to get. xx
