I know wedding dresses are notoriously small sizes but i just wanted to check something. Hopefully someone on here will be able to put my mind at ease. I've ordered a Maggie Sottero dress (Janelle) but I'm worried about the size they've ordered. I tried the dress on in one shop and they said it was a 10 or 12 can't quite remember and it fit perfectly. The shop I wanted to buy the dress from didn't have it in stock for me to try on so they ordered it based on my measurements. My bust is 39 inches, waist 30 inches and hips 42 inches and they've ordered me a size 16. This seems big compared to the one i tried on originally and I'm losing weight every week anyway. I normally wear a size 12 in clothes shops and am hoping to be a 10/12 for the day. How much altering can they do and what if it's too big when it comes because they've ordered the wrong size and it's too late to get another one made? I'm starting to panic now. The dress should arrive in April for my July wedding. Please help!

I was the same- 10-12 everyday, needed a size 16 wedding dress. Needed taking in at the bust (about an inch either side) but thats it.

Is it lace up? A smaller dress can be made to fit in a lace up, but doesn't look as good at the back.

They can take it down two sizes. The thing is they take the measurements from the biggest bit of you order the dress to fit there and then take it in everywhere else. I sure it will be fine.

It is a lace up. It just seems a really big difference and the one I tried on definately wasn't a 16 and it fit lovely.

I have a Maggie and the dress I have is a 14 but I am ususlly a 16 (pics on my profile if you wanna see the fit). The shop said it was perfect and that I didn't need a bigger size. The reason (they said) is because Maggie dresses are coreseted and can pull in or let out a good couple of sizes either way. The Maggies are known for their versatility when it comes to sizing but if you tried a 10 or 12 and it was perfect ring the shop and ask why if that one fitted perfectly are they ordering one two sizes bigger? It will at least put your mind at rest. Keep us posted hun and good luck xxx

Thing is I didn't try it on in the shop I ordered from. It's a long story but basically I went home to Wales to try on dresses with my mum and BMs but wanted to order from Scotland where we live and are getting married. Easier for fittings etc. When they said the size they were ordering I questioned it and they said they had used the Maggie size chart and my measurements come up as a size 16. I found a maggie size chart online and it put me at a perfect 12.

Just double check it with them babe, if you are absolutely sure get them to change the order. But whatever you do don't panic! They can always take it in for you. I just looked at the Janelle and it is quite fitted to the hip, this could be why they ordered the size they did based on the style. You need to talk to them babe, my shop is lovely, I too had doubts when they said they were ordering the 14 but they do it everyday and they do know the shapes and styles of the dresses and they are only too happy to discuss your concerns xx

wedding dress sizes are a nightmare esp if you are losing weight. It does seem strange that if you fitted into a 10/12 they have odered one 2/3 sizes up though. Ask them to check it and get something in writing coz if it too big they should do the alterations for free as you expressed concern over it.

Im shocked she let you see the size of it - I'm an 18 and my dress will have to be ordered in a 22 or 24 - I actually looked at the size on the dress when putting it on and was nearly in tears - the lady said thats why she tries hard to not let anyone see the size of the dress.

mine was a 14, and because its a sale gown, thats the 1 im havingf and im normally a 16-18 so well chuffed, but the dress may have been stretched slightly from lots of people trying on, like others have said if you show concern, and it is too big u could probably get ur alterations for free

Its wierd that they say sizes run small in wedding dresses- because im ussualy size 8-10 street size, and every size 10 or size 8 Wedding dress ive tried on has been too big! im deff no smaller than size 8- but in wedding dresses i ussaly need a few inches taken in. I dont understand it.

Id say if you fit a size 10/12 in the wedding dress. I would order that wedding dress in that size- its gotta be the same size if its the same dress?

Otherwise, it seems like they are ordering it too big so they can charge you fees to take it in.

I usually get a size 16 clothes (bust 40 inch) - but my wedding dress was ordered in a size 18. It's a bit big but can be altered (and my alterations are included in the price) - but the size of wedding dress varies between different designers (mines' a Forever Yours). If you're worried, ask to see the designers size chart - or look it up on their website. Usually a 39/40 bust is a size 16 anyway, so if they've ordered you a size 16 dress I'm guessing they know what they're doing.

Thanks for all ur comments. I honestly won't care what size the label says as long as it's right but it's just weird that they don't run true to what we buy normally. What's the point in making them smaller than we're used to? It's so depressing. I've sent them an email so I'll wait and see what they say

why do they do the sizes so small?? on the most important day of a girls life, they make us feel like fatties in dress sizes way bigger than we normally wear??

i am a 14, and my benjamin Roberts dress is an 18, and i squidge up over the top of it and have a back bum. nice. But plenty time to tone that up.

however, I tried on a size 14 Essence dress and it fit me perfectly!? so guess their sizing is pretty spot on.

Sizes are all over the place - same with clothing these days. Gone are the days where you knew what size you were. I fit into everything from a size 8 to a size 14 depending on the shop, the style, etc etc. At least if it's ordered a bit too big it can be taken in. Better than being too small.

    Hi,
    i m dressmaker,and i make to mesure wedding dresses.
Each designer got a diferent chart of mesuments.Ask them to see if your mesuments aproching yours.
If you are 10 or 12 size 16 it's quit big!
Ask to have one fitting very soon to make sure they will do a good job.
I don't want to worried, but just to be carefull, bcause i work for shops ,where sometimes they take advantage of you when you are to kind.
Good luck and don't worrie i m sure they will do a goog job.

I'm a 14, my dress is a 14 (Mori Lee) but when I went dress shopping I was a 12 and found that some 18 dresses were 'snug'

Depends on the design and designer, the material, the cut, the lining etc etc. If you're worried physically speak to the shop (ie ring them) and get them to put your mind at rest
