I get married next July at a venue in Northumberland. I really don't want to spend a fortune on a cake, only was something quite simple. Does any have any suggestions...?

You could always consider making it yourself... you have plenty time to practice...
you could consider cupcakes - on average £1.00 per cake...
alternatively.. marks and sparks have birthdays cakes.. reasonably priced....

Hey,
I have only just decided to get a smallish, single tier of traditional iced fruit cake for the cutting (and for the elderly people who like fruit cake), then I am going to order and buy a variety of cakes from my local bakery (carrott, lemon, victoria sponge and chocolate). This works out SO much cheaper and also gives guests variety. Even the major supermarkets do gorgeous cakes these days.

Do you know anybody that is good at making cakes? I asked a school friend on FB to make mine and am only paying £100, if not M&$ make some lovely cakes and all you have to do is assemble them. You could also try one cake or a two tiered one and fill the rest of the space with cupcakes, this would keep costs down a lot x

Shop around! That's my suggestion, we was quoted lots for a cake, then we ended up getting a four tier, four flavour cake with lots of design for £220 and it tasted great. Just depends what you're after, you could add a false layer if you want to keep the cost down but so it still looks extravagant x

We got five friends to each make a tier, and MIL decorated them with flowers and ribbons. It was a lot of stress in the last week of the wedding which we didn't need, but it saved a lot of money. We provided boxes and boards for each cake and bought the icing, but all the bakers were happy to purchase the ingredients themselves.
30th August 2014 was the best birthday ever.
It was the day that I became Mrs. Dixon.

I was going to make my own cup cakes, then buy a supermarket cake to go on top to cut. My mum did not want me stressing making the cakes so offered to pay for them, I had the cases and the sugar flowers already to go on top so the lady who made them done them a little cheaper. My moh wanted to make the cake to go on top as well so she done that.
Have you thought of a naked cake? They might be cheaper as not got the detailing of icing etc to do.

We are having a naked wedding cake.. will come up much cheaper as there is no icing and no intricate, complicated detailing. You will probably be better off speaking to local, smaller bakeries rather than specialist wedding cake makers also xx

I totally agree with mrs K to be, M&$ cakes are really reasonably priced :). And there are lots of choices. We are getting 3 plane tiers from them and decorating it our selves. We have priced it up and it will come to about £100 including decorating icing, and a few tools :). Xx

not sure if anyone has mentioned, but i myself am not a cake person, so me and OH toyed with the ideas of Cake pops.
little bite sized peices of cake which can be decorated to your taste.
I quoted 100 for everyone and worked out much cheaper than a 3 teir cake. ive a few links if anyones interested.
Thankfully the MIL is payin for the cake, so we binned this idea. but i still think its a good quirky ones for something different.

My OH hates cake and obviously it's his day too so were going to have a doughnut (donut?!) tower with a small fruitcake to cut

I'm having the M&5 cake that has black ribbon round 3 tiers and it's so much cheaper than a very similar thing quoted from a cake maker. I guess I'm lucky that it's already in my colours. It they have some lovely plain ones you could ribbon up yourself or have flowers put on?

From a cake maker... Work out your budget, decide on your ideal cake and price it up yourself for ingredients! A general 3 tier cake usually costs around £50-60 in ingredients so you can see how much extra people charge.
If you have time then start practising, cupcake towers with a top cutting cake are simple as cheap to make. If you want to ask any questions just pm me :)

I'll make sure I run any of my quotes by you first then!! ;)
I have received one quote from someone of £160 for a 3-tier naked cake to serve 80 people.. How does that sound? How much should they generally be charging for their time do you reckon? Xx

For a naked cake? There goes your biggest expense.. The fondant/icing! Some people will charge £5 a hour for their time some will charge £10 a hour which is disgusting in my opinion. Naked cakes don't take long to make in theory, I don't wish to slate anyone quotes publicly since everyone needs to make a living and people do book their cakes through this site so message !e hun and I will work out how much ingredients and the stuff needed to stack would cost so you can decide for yourself.
Being realistic naked cake doesn't need a expert and I could easily guide you through making it yourself to the point I'd even give you a sponge recipe to try ;) x

I would happily have a go at making it myself, buuuuut, I've heard that because there is no icing to protect the sponge the cake would ideally need to be made the evening before so that the sponge doesn't dry out.. is this true? If so, I'm not sure baking a cake would be the best thing for me to do the night before my wedding hehe.. imagine!!
I am thinking about asking a friend of my auntie's if she could make it as she makes cakes for a hobby rather than for a living, so I'm sure she could do it a lot cheaper for us.. but it would be fab having a 'guide price' to go by for reference.
I have sent you a friend request, will probably message you tomorrow as I'm going to be signing off for the evening now. Thank you so much for your help x

I will drop you a message for in the morning hun.
Its true sponge can dry out very quickly but with a bit of clever thinking there is a way to keep it moist using a very simple sugar syrup helps ;)
