Hello fellow Bride's. Due to money been tight my h2b and i have decided to have a registry wedding (and also we are only inviting close family to the wedding we didn't meet minimum numbers for the hotel we wanted.) So....we were thinking of asking my mum (who had mentioned this when we announced our engagement) of having our reception and evening do at my mum's house. We're going to supply food and alcohol and do a buffet and a bbq, hire a gazebo and try to make it personal to us. The only thing is I'm worried it will take the formality out of doing speeches and the first/father/mother dance. Also I'm worried about certain family members snubbing our decision. The other venue we've thought of is our local rugby club which will do wedding breakfast And evening party. Has anybody else done this, how did it work out?

I haven't done this myself but a friend did something similar. She asked all her guests to bring a dish for the buffet so it had a real family feel about it as everyone had contributed. It's your wedding and should be personal to you and your h2b so if this is what you want then go for it and ignore anyone who says otherwise. Would the formalities be any different in the rugby club? You would still need to get everyones attention for speeches etc. Hope it works out :-)

If family members snub your wedding because of where YOU choose to have YOUR wedding reception then in my opinion they arent worth calling family .
i once went to a wedding where the reception was held in a scuffy pub next to a football ground ,, not my choice of venue but then it wasn't my wedding and i cared about the couple far far more than where i was stood with a sandwich !
I agree with lala. If they truly care about you then they won't care where it is. I've known people do wedding receptions in gardens. Go for it, if it is what you want now due to costs etc then do it. Sod the others. Do what makes you happy.
Our wedding day - 6 October 2012

I also agree with lala. It's your wedding and how and where you have it is entirely up to you. The people that come will be the ones who genuinely care for you, and the ones who don't ... well, you know the rest. Good luck x x
For my grandmothers 80th birthday, we hired a marquee and a stereo system and my aunt made a beautiful speech. I don't think you have anything to worry about as I think it would be quite nice for a wedding.
I agree with Lala. If they don't like it, they don't have to be there. It's your day, therefore have it your way x
