My mum rang yesterday, and among other things that we talked about, she mentioned that my great-grandmother's wedding ring is at my aunt's house. Apparently my grandmother was supposed to wear it but because she got married in wartime she had to use a cheaper utility ring. Her mother's ring was then made into a signet ring for her brother, and after he died mum didn't know what had happened to it until her sister mentioned that she had it. She was asking me if I would like it for my wedding ring, which I thing would be amazing. I'm just wondering how doable it is. As it's been made into a man's ring presumable they would have to actually melt it down and start again.

Go to a jeweller to see what they can suggest for you. If it has been changed one way, they may possibly be able to change to back? It depends what you want done to it and their capabilities I guess. Shop around and see what they say. Hoping you find a way!

Im sure you could just get it re-sized, its definately worth checking. Ive got my grandmas wedding ring, took it to a jewellers, they resized it and polished it up - looks brand new. they did that and my engagement ring for £30

As poppy says, they may be able to change it back anyway?

    Good luck :)

I had my nans ring but it had snapped and needed resizing and fixing, I found a jewellers that did it, can't remember how much was paid to have it fixed etc but anyway I said to my mum I would like it for my 21st birthday which I did.

It depends on what you want it to look like hun, there would be loads of possibilities!!

If you want a wedding band, ie one which is the same all the way around it would probably make most sense to melt it down into a cast of the style you want.
As most signet rings are oval and go thinner at the back it may not sit with your engagement ring so would need some changes making. If you would wear it on its own i'm sure it could be resized pretty easily.

If your in the Cheshire area come see me i'll get it sorted for ya :D xxx

Sparklez, I'm much further south unfortunately, in Cardiff. I haven't seen it yet so I don't know exactly how much change will be needed, but from what Mum said it sounds like it will be a case of melting it down. How much do you think I should expect to pay roughly?

    Aww darn! ):
It varies considerably from jeweller to jeweller, especially if they have to send it to someone else to do.
I would have thought it would still cost you £100-150 to be done as a band. More if you decide to add in any stones.
I'm not sure what jewellers are out near you im afraid, i'm used to working with the jewellery quarter in Birmingham for jobbing work as there are many people who have workshops and can barter with em hehe x

It can be done I'm sure but do shop around I would like to have my mums eternity ring melted down and used (or at least the stones) as I can't wear it as yellow gold but would like it to be incorporated in my wedding ring some how x

ElinorB92 I'd like to give you a word of caution about having the ring 'melted down and remade'.

The problem is that for years the jewellery industry has told customers that they will use the metal from your old ring to make a new one when in fact they simply throw your old ring into the scrap and supply a new one. This is very widespread and is, to us, completely unacceptable.

There are some 'craft' jewellers who will melt old rings and make them into new ones and they will usually let you see them doing the work if you ask but most of the high street chains will simply throw your old ring into the scrap and make a new one from 'clean' gold they buy in from the bullion dealers.

I know this will come as a shock to many people but its unfortunately true. Hundreds of people are misled like this every year.

There are some technical difficulties in using small quantities of gold (like an old ring) to make a new one so that's why some firms mislead people about the acutual process. Melting gold in small quantities can creat microscopic air bubbles in the gold which weakens it and makes it likely to crack or wear quickly.

There is no way of telling if your old gold has been used and this is how the jewellers who fool people get away with it.

So our message is - be very careful and make sure you get written assurances from whichever jeweller that they'll use your metal in the new ring.

Sorry to be the bearers of bad news but we feel this needs to be said
