I know there have been other threads on this but I wanted some advice personal to me lol sorry if thats cheeky!

My dress has quite a big skirt, I tried it on yesterday and it definitely needs something to hold it up, but I've heard hoops are awkward for sitting down in etc. Also my reception will be on a boat so I am thinking about narrow stairs and a toilet thats probably on the cramped side! There is a pic of it on my profile which is exactly the right "volume" of skirt I want, if anyone could advise on what to wear underneath to achieve it that would be great. I would go and try it in some shops but none of my local ones have a sample, and seems a bit silly paying to order one in when I already have the dress lol.

    Thanks ladies x

i am having a hoop and when i tried on my dress last week i tried sitting down and it was fine. i was a bit worried about that too. you can get cheap ones of the bay. if you are worried about the boat you could just wear it for the ceremony and photos?

You can get ubderskirts that give you the volume you want that dont have the hoops in. They are just layers and layers of materiel instead........i'll see if i can find what i mean for you.

I thought about that Hails but arent they all made of that horrid itchy material? Last thing I want is to be scratching my rear end all night.. or attempting to haha. Mrsbarkertobe was that a single hoop or did it have a few? x

Yeah I definitely want it big, and keeping it off my legs will also probably be a good idea as it will be the end of June and its blimmin heavy! Just my aunt was laughing at the thought of me getting stuck in the doorway of a tiny little toilet and now I cant get the image out of my head lol! x

I got my hoop of the bay of e, ordered it friday and it arrived this morning. I've gone for the 3 hoop option and to be fair there will be no issue of my being able to sit down and move in it as the hoops are flexible meaning that when i do sit they will bend with the shape of me. It was 11.98 delivered, which i thought was a bargain.

It really does finish off a dress having the hoop :o) x

Does one end not sort of ping up into the air when you sit down on the other end of it? Or does the weight of the dress keep it down? Sorry lol I probably sound really dumb but I've never even seen one, let alone tried one on! £11.98 sounds really reasonable, you dont happen to have a link for that do you Ali? x

u can get away with a single hoop near the bottom. I think any more may make it bigger. Are there any in ur bridal shop u can try.

i think all of us considering hoops are with the same problems... im not sure either what type I need and bridal shop unhelpful as only stocks two types of underskirt. We could do with a thread that gave actual examples of what type of underskirt we would need for each type of dress.

For a start the hoops are flexible so they will squish in when you walk down somewhere narrow. They will also be OK when you sit down if you just get an A line one hoop underskirt. I got mine from ebay and you can even adjust the size of the hoop to suit too.

im going for a four hoop I think???? and wondering how it will be so flexible that I can sit in it. Also what happens if you sit in it and something happens for the metal or whatever they use comes out through the material... probably silly but I am worried about that and it ripping my dress

You can get varying styles of hoop and petticoat so try some on and see how you feel sitting etc. Petticoats and hoops are great for fuller skirts in terms of them keeping their shape but also to stop you from falling over your feet and makes it easy to put on your gown

Unless you have a gypsy wedding dress where the hoop is so oversized due to the skirt you can't move i don't think you'll have a problem xxx

    Thank you Tilomilo :)

Lovelylainee thats the trouble for me, I already have my dress and couldnt walk into a shop just to try hoops and petticoats on lol. I could buy a few and return the ones that dont work I guess, but thats a bit of a long-winded (and expensive!) process! It sounds like a single hoop would be the best option for me but now I'm worried it wont be enough to fluff out the whole skirt.. it is much heavier than I thought it would be, so maybe a single hoop with lots of layers of underskirt.. if such things exist! The "hoop examples" thread would be a really good idea Suzky - I'm glad it isnt just me who is baffled by the whole thing!

That maggie sottero gown definitely needs a hoop in that case and my advice to you after trying that style of gown on is to get a 2 hoop petticoat to go underneath. They are quite light and easy to wear and you can get them from most shops. Or you can get them at a fraction of the price on ebay.

I bought a hoop from ebay and was perfectly fine. I just didn't want the dress i bought it for so sold them both as a set.

Good luck getting one but the 2 hoop petticoat is def what you need xxx

hey girlies thanks for coming back to me. The peeps that sell on ebay that 'suposedly' come from Manchester and another from Canada have said that they go up to a 37" waist. Well I am just under 40" and dropping inches at a good pace.
If I wanted what they call an XL one (over 40") its about £30 +
    Just confuddled.
One has asked for my measurements and picks of the dress, guess its watch this space. Just dont want to leave it too late in case I cant get hold of one, and yep I know, I stil have 6 and a half months left but I am anal and want everything by the time the proper proper dress fitting and alterations take place. xx
