We've all been there. The place looks and sounds spectacular on paper, but when you arrive to check the place out, you are either delighted, or mortified beyond belief. What venues have you visited that you highly recommend, or ones that you were disappointed in? (Try not to be TOO harsh on the flops. They do have businesses to run. Haha.)
For me I highly recommend Cressbrook Hall in Derbyshire. It's a gorgeous hall that was built in the reign of William IV and it has some spectacular views, a gorgeous garden that they restored back to how it would have been in 1850 and incredibly friendly staff. The package they offered me included accommodation for my guests in the rooms and cottages on site which is a HUGE help, as a lot will be traveling quite a distance. The food choices are also spot on with various options for those who enjoy fancy and also for those that don't. They also offer a hog roast in summer.
Another place to recommend (If you can afford it) is Chatsworth House. If you don't mind sharing the place with tourists (As they are still milling about in different areas) then this is a dream venue. It is a little steep on price, but the quality is very good.
One place I wasn't so keen on was the New Bath Hotel in Matlock Bath. Matlock Bath is one of my all time favourite places to visit. It's only a short drive from where I live and it is so beautiful. But, the venue was not up to scratch. The staff were very friendly and accommodating, but the place seemed as if it was stuck in a time period it really shouldn't have been. The carpets were bright and gaudy, the outside had peeling paint and the place just wasn't as grand and comfortable as expected. It would be ideal for business conferences, but for a wedding? Not for me.
What about yourselves? Got any tales of woe? Or maybe you found several dream venues?

My dream venue was Swinton Park Hotel in Masham - we went to visit, absolutely fell in love with the place but just couldn't afford the prices they were asking. Its just gorgeous, but we didn't have the £15000 they wanted for exclusive use :o( Another one we really like was Bagden Hall in Denby Dale, that was definite second place for us, but we decided we preferred the one we have now instead, we much preferred the prices too :o) We loved Barley Hall in York too but it just wasn't big enough (and we're only having 40 guests!) and there's no parking so that was a no no. The only one we went to that we looked around and thought 'no way' was Monk Fryston Hall which looks absolutely beautiful from the outside but is really old and grubby inside xx

I fell in love with the Painted Hall in the Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich, but if I remember rightly they wanted £15k just for hire, so that was well out of the question! I still look at pictures now and feel gutted that I cant have it!
I cant say I visited anywhere too awful but my other half was quite keen on a village-hall-type place near him which had gaudy pink walls, clashing red curtains and windows we werent allowed to open (we were looking at a summer wedding at the time). That got jogged on pretty quickly!

My dream venue was Tudor Barn Eltham - it was absolutely gorgeous! It was built in 16th Century and links back to Henry VIII. It had beautiful grounds surrounding it, the beams in the ceiling were all original and it had a bloomin' moat around it! Just amazing. Unfortunately, it would have pushed our budget to the limit and we would have had to sacrifice on guests, food, photography etc to hold our wedding there.
The worst venue we viewed was actually the first one. The woman refused to give me any details over the phone or email as to hire costs or anything, so we had to go and view it to find out anything about the place. We turned up to this venue that was just behind a residential street, the car park was pitch black and we couldn't find a way inside! I had to phone the lady to find out if we were in the right place! Anyway, we eventually got inside and the place was just awful. It stank of damp, the paint was peeling and there was gaffa tape on the floor! And then she wanted £2,000 just to hire the place! We made our excuses and left pretty sharpish!

We wanted Thornton Manor, not too far from Liverpool. We went to look at the biggest marquee they had, at first glance it was lovely, but the prices they were asking were outrageous, especially when we looked at the toilets that would be available to us at the outside marquee...they were not nice. I would have accepted them if the place had been cheap, but at £15k for the whole package? Hells no.
We love Didsbury House which is our venue, they are not too highly priced and very nice. A bit loopy wedding planner, but if you can deal with it it's really good.
I loved a place called hinton grange - it was beautiful and a bit different but we decided against it as it had mixed reviews and i didnt want to worry - its since closed down which is a shame Our venue was amazing when i first saw it - had that proper tingly feeling - the only downside was that you couldnt marry outside which is what i would have liked but everything else was perfect. I couldnt stop smiling the whole way home
The worst venue i saw by far was The Cadbury House Hotel which is a Hilton - the wedding brochure is well edited to remove the fact that the outside wedding bit is basically in the car park and the nice old hotel is attached to a rather garish extension. What was worse was that they refused to let us see one of the rooms as we probably wouldnt have enough guests (how rude - does it really hurt to look)- The only room we were allowed looked out on the only bit of ground that they had for photos so if the other two wedding rooms booked out you would have to watch them having all their photos done!
There are so many people out there who will tell you
what you can't do.
What you have to do is turn around and say, "watch me"!!

We definitely liked the look of Gretna Green - and after looking online, fell in love with Gretna Hall Blacksmiths. We visited 'in the flesh' and it was even better than online - so that's where we got married!!! I'd definitely recommend it for any size wedding (the blacksmiths cater for bigger weddings and the Linton Suite, where we got married, and the Blacksmiths Cottage cater for smaller weddings). The place is so scenic and is steeped in history as well.

I agree with nicsquared! Cadbury house hotel was defo the worst in terms of what we wanted! We have gone for priston mill but also liked egypt mill apart from low ceilings (h2b is over 6 ft as are most of the men in his family) and distance from church was just too far. Also loved the outside of chewton place but not so keen on inside ( and according to recent reports think this has closed as well)

I once stayed at hotel near Boston Lincolnshire, somebody else had booked online for me to stay there when visiting family, the website made the place look alright, nothing like the pictures when we got there!! There was a wedding on when we were staying there, I felt so sorry for the bride, the place was so dirty and they obviously had a problem with the sewage system because that was all you could smell everywhere!! we waited ages at the reception for someone to arrive so we could be checked in, and the waitress was the rudest I've ever met. we've gone for the Riverbank in Truro, just the right size for our do, REALLY good deal, food is to die for, staff are friendly, i could go on and on!!!!

Saw so many venues, and could see plus and minus sides to all of them, there were only a few that got ruled out immediately, one of them was an utterly spectacular old estate house on the outside, really stunning, but inside it just looked like it had been painted white about 15 years ago, all very bland and neglected, which is a shame, had worked at a wedding there and was impressed at the time! Think it was more disappointing because it was obvious that at one time it had been utterly spectacular! Other one I found some photos online and fell in love with the homliness of the ceremony room and the cottage-style gardens, but when we actually got there, all the backstage areas (toilets, kitchen, walkways etc) were just like at a youth hostel, definitely not right for us. We also ruled out Wortley Hall straight away, I don't feel bad about naming them though, because our reasoning isn't a slight on the venue, and if you're looking for a grand old building near Sheffield it's gorgeous and very reasonably priced! But it's owned by the unions, to the point where all the suites and rooms are named after high-profile members of the socialist movement, the evening do room has a big UNITE logo on the door, and when we visited, it was in the middle of an exibition of miners strike art! H2B not a fan of the unions, and would probably have melted if we'd got married in the AEU lounge!
My parents used to stay at Kenwood Hall we they came up to visit me at uni, and it had gorgeous gardens and a nice breakfast, so that was reason enough to go and look. Was completely bowled over by the old part of the building I'd never seen. What suprised me was all the rooms, I've never been to a wedding that was essentially a house party layout, I definitely had reservations about that! But h2b is really happy with the idea of being able to keep the different sides of his family in seperate rooms at all times, and when I adjusted to the idea of not just having a big room, I fell in love!

i completley fell in love with arley hall and gardens in cheshire... it is just in the middle of no where though and would have taken hours to get there and chances are most of our guests would have got lost so we opted for town centre hotel where everyone knows (and is also £10k cheaper lol) the other option we were looking at was craig y nos castle but H2B uncle cannot travel as he has taken really ill and needs oxygen tanks with him so a cold castle not good for him:(

We have looked at west India house in Somerset for a reception the photos of the place are stunning yet the actual reality is nothing like the photos altho the staff are friendly and very welcoming and it is extremely reasonably priced I think looking at the photos made us get excited so when seeing the actual venue as we had excepted one thing it was a bigger disappointment altho we were reluctant in looking at local rugby club how ever the room is beautiful and light so I think we shouldn't rely so much on websites and photos and get out there and look

looked at a few close to me in batley area in west yorkshire. the ones i liked on paper i really didn't like when visited :( they just looked so much like social clubs with decor and my h2b refuses to pay so much for a place where the room you get married has a bar in it (really didn't bother me lol but the decor did). we saw an advert for the venue we've choosen and i really didn't think i'd like it but once we got there i instantly fell in love with it. it's called dimple well lodge hotel and it's as cute as it's name. everythings modern looking. my minus's are the size of function room is slightly small but i also think it'll be intimate :) then the dance floor was tiny but been informed that it's one of the dance floors that can be extended :) it's plus's are too many to say but the main ones are that it's in budget, beautiful quirky garden for photo's and having the whole hotel to ourselves for our wedding so no other guest to bother us :)

We didn't have much luck when it came to venues.
When we originally got engaged we looked at both Spain and Coventry weddings, we got brochures from a local hotel which was nice and quite cheap at £2k, we only had time for a quick chat with their co-ordinator but they were very friendly and helpful. Then I emailed a couple of Spanish hotels near where the future inlaws live to ask for quotes and was completely ignored by all of them, so we settled on Coventry.
I asked around a few local venues - one wine bar seemed to not understand the concept of a function or hire or any kind of event hosting, so that was out (it was a long shot but I figured that asking couldn't hurt) and the only other venue I liked was Coventry Cathedral, which we got quotes for and their events co-ordinator was friendly and replied to emails quickly. We probably would have gone for that IF not that it was around this time that I got fed up of trying to juggle caterers, florists, venues, all that jazz in England and started thinking about Spain again. So we asked h2b's parents if we could use their villa, they said yes and it's been easy since then.
Got married 27th June and blessed on July 5th 2012
Finally Mrs M :3
Love, love... Here we are.

Wow nicsquared I didn't realise that Hinton Grange had closed, it was a lovely little place (although a pain to find) and I'm in agreement with Cadbury House, I've been to a few weddings there which were nice enough, but not for the money they wanted!
I also loved the outside of Chewton place, the grounds & river are beautiful, but they decided to do up the inside a year or so back which in my opinion made it totally lose its character (although as Sar said they're no longer doing weddings anyways) The grange hotel in winterbourne was a nice venue with good prices, but the wedding coordinator there totally put me off. I had met her previously with the future mother in law whilst helping her with wedding flowers, so although I probably saw the supplier side of her not the bride side I don't think I could have dealt with her!
Priston mill in bath was beautiful, and pretty perfect, it just ended up out of our price range. In the end we went with Stonehouse court hotel in stroud, the venue is lovely, the staff are amazing and sooooo helpful!! I can't wait :o)

I looked at one place that could have been really lovely - quite expensive though - except the main attraction and selling point which was the terrace outside where you could have the ceremony was horrible. When I and MIL went to view it we were so unimpressed! There was a bizarre model of a bear, chained up to a tree!? And a random model horse's head stuck in the ground.
I know someone on here is getting married there though so you know, each to her own. (Have checked and she's not been on for months, think i'm safe!)

I was also put off by a couple of places that didn't reply to emails. Or when I asked to view it they said, 'look at the brochure' - a 2 sided leaflet with teeny pics.
One I went to view but the lady kept me waiting over 30 mins and I had another to view nearby so went for that one instead!

i had one venue who was experiencing problems with their internet and no one could view the brouchure online so asked for it posting out to me. they didn't pay the postage in full so i got a letter asking for the rest and postal chargers on top. lets just say they didn't get choosen lol

I found all of the venues we went to look at nice, I was just particularly fussy. I know a couple of people on here who are having their weddings/looking into having them at some of the places, so won't name, but what put us off one venue was the 'canteen dinner' smell that seemed to hover in every function room!
I can say that I'm happy with the choice we've made although I find myself doing a lot of fbook stalking, and recently found a friend-of-a-friend's album with their wedding in the same venue, and I wasn't impressed with how the room looked for the party at night, there seemed to be no flowers etc, and it looked quite plain. It worries me because they didn't use chair covers and I think it makes quite a difference and I don't want to fork out for covers either! Oh well, at least I get my venue on the lakeside!!!
