I originally planned to order a personalised cake topper of a bride holding a camera and a groom holding an xboa controller :)
I really love this idea but all the quote's I have had are around £100 :( so not within my budget. I them considered having a camera with a vail and bouquet and an xbox controller with a top hat and tie, but again I think we would be looking at spending quite a bit.
I was thinking if it might be a good idea to try and make this myself....I couldn't do the first option but I could have a go at the second. The thing is I don't know where to start and what materials to used.
I am hoping someone might have some idea or could give me some tips please

linzmum I've had a really reasonable quote for a great lady on bookface who does them. They're really professional, she does them custom made and they're only £50? I'll pop a link on your wall. I'm getting ours done as a surprise and the bride's holding a bouquet and the groom's holding a ps3 controller.

As for tips for making them - try fimo dough as it's excellent (although requires a LOT of kneading initially to become pliable so don't panic at first!) for sculpting etc. There's probs bags of videos online about how to do it though hon? Xx

You can buy special molds to make people with in cake decorating shops. What you make it with depends upon whether you want it to be edible or not. As MrsClarke2Be says, you can buy fimo if you don't want it to be edible or you can use gum paste if you would like it to be. Although, gum paste, whilst edible, tastes pretty disgusting so really i'd recommend it as being food safe. You can buy tubs of powdered gum paste which you add water and icing sugar too, or you can buy it ready made in the right colours. Buying it ready made is a pretty expensive option though, and i guess unless you are going to use them again, food colours for the powdered stuff is pretty expensive too

I made my own cake toppers. As we are having a lovebird/doves theme, I decided to make a pair of birds in wedding attire. I go to ceramics/pottery evening classes and I made them there. The female bird is wearing a veil made from a lace trim and is also wearing a pearl necklace. The male bird is wearing a top hat and purple tie.

My pottery classes cost £60 for 10 2hour sessions, and you can make whatever you want, at your own pace. The lessons are not structured. You could easily make 40 place names/favours with a bit of imagination, as well as a pair of cake toppers, or anything else you want. I think paying £60 for all of that is quite a good deal really. And it would be special because it will be all unique as you made it yourself. They charge less if you are on a low income - I only have to pay £15!

Or maybe use salt dough, and then once it is dry you can paint it. There are recipes on the internet, I am sure. xxx

When I get my computer up and running properly, I will start putting photos up of the things I have made e.g. stationary, garters, cake toppers etc x

I have had some quotes for £50 too but as my entire wedding budget is under £1000 then I don't want to spend that much on one small item :( I know I am paying for the labour etc and that is a good price but its just too much for our pocket. I think I will try to make one first and if it really doesn't work Then try to get some money from somewhere. Thank you ladies :)

My mum is making ours out of sugar paste, which keeps for ages so she's going to make them in advance of the cake - our local cake supplies shop does evening classes in sugarcraft, they did reindeers and choirboys etc in preparation for Christmas - see if any in your area do this too :-)

Or indeed sugar paste, as bridal miss so cleverly suggested. Sugar paste probably looks much more dainty and pretty than salt dough. xxx
