I have had my engagement ring for about 3 months, it's white gold and set with small diamonds. I always remove the ring when in bed at night, when cooking, washing, in the bath, in fact I only wear it when I'm relaxing or at work. I have noticed despite looking after it that's getting small scratches already, is there anything more I can do avoid them getting worse?
Can't wait until the day I become Mrs. Johnson :)

I'm pretty sure there is a smooch thread somewhere that said about them and what to do to look after your ring etc. Can't remember what it was called though.
CommentAuthorclaireandpete
that will happen with white gold, as it is an alloyed metal. When i got my engagement ring we asked about the differences and what to go for, and got told white gold was lovely but depending on wear needs to be put back to the jewelers every so often to be re-alloyed.
CommentAuthorLiz3yy
Awwww ok thanks for that. I guess it's not a good idea to get a white gold wedding ring then? do you know which metal is the most durable?
Can't wait until the day I become Mrs. Johnson :)
CommentAuthorLittle Kettle
Platinum or palladium are more durable, but if you're wearing it against a white gold it will wear away at the white gold, so be really careful with mixing metals. Hx
Thanks. I don't plan to wear both rings together because my engagement ring is such an unsual shape and I have yet to see a wedding band that fit next to it.

You can have waxing moulds done so that the wedding ring is shaped to fit around your E ring. Most independant jewellers that make their own stuff can do this and it doesn't work out that much more as you are paying for the weight of gold. Brum is amazing for things like that.

I just ordered my ring, and won't wear E ring next to it as my E ring is white gold, and now I know more about it I am disappointed. My wedding band will be in palladium, and like the girls say what you can do is have re plated.

I got me E ring on bonfire night and by feb i already lost a diamond and it was scratched to hell. When my htb took it back to be fixed I got a brand new ring instead so now I'm terrified to wear it. White gold is so pretty but I wish it would stay all shinny and new for longer XX

my jewellers will replate or whatever they do with mine free of charge for my wedding so it looks sparkling new again but they said it only costs £20-£25 to have it done so dont worry its not mega bucks to having it looking its best again!!

The truth is that ALL jewellery metals will scratch - some quickly and others a bit slower.
White gold is plated with Rhodium to make it as white and bright as possible but the rhodium wears off over 6 - 12 months and the ring will start to look yellowish. Smooch uses a high grade of 18ct white gold which is 'palladium rich' and this resists the yellowing process for much longer but we also re-rhodium our rings for free.
Small scratches will appear on any ring almost as soon as you take the ring out of the box - there's really nothing you can do to stop this but avoiding all the things Liz3yy mentions is a good start. However even handing things like metal cutlery, loose change or keys can cause scratches.
The scratches will gradually merge into a beautiful soft satiny finish - we think this is part of the beauty of gold, platinum and palladium. However any good jeweller will repolish rings they have supplied, often free of charge, if you prefer them with a highly polished finish.
Anyone who buys their wedding rings from us can have their engagement ring repolished or re-rhodiumed free of charge.
Smooch is producing a free leaf'et about caring for your jewellery which you will be able to download from our website in a couple of weeks. If you have a query about any aspect of wedding rings you can ask a question on this forum or call our customer service desk even if you haven't bought your rings from us. We can offer general advice on caring for your jewellery but cannot comment on other companies' prices or products. Unfortunately we can't repair or alter other companies' rings.

Hi Ali. As a smooch customer you can send the ring to us about 4 - 6 weeks before the wedding and we'll re-dip (or re-Rhodium) it for you. You'll have it back in about 2 weeks

Hi, brilliant as although i've only had it since January it is already yellowing palm side. x

I love every scratch on mine, as to me it tells my story. I actually try my best NOT to take mine off. Just as I cant stay a fresh spring 18 year old chicken, I dont want my ring too either. Think that I am just an old romantic ;-)
CommentAuthorMel D
I only take mine off if I'm washing my hair and it's very knotty, which is not very often. Other than that it is on all the time. I'm going to get it cleaned for the wedding, but I don't think it needs re-plating yet.

I take mine off for washing up and some cooking and cleaning tasks but for the most part it is always on.
JaeSin, that is a lovely way of looking at it. x

Mine is Platinum and has scratches on it too, I have quite a physical job at the moment so it's bound to happen. For the first few months I kept taking it off everytime I washed my hands, now I realise it can't go on forever and have accepted that it isn't always going to look flawless, even if it does make me sad to look at it sometimes and think it is scratched :-( x
CommentAuthorMel D
I wear gloves when I do washing up as the water gets too hot, and h2b does all the cooking and cleaning (LOL)

I totally understand why some people may want to preserve theirs and keep them looking fresh and sparkly and pretty. But its not for me.
Without trying to lower the tone, mine has a deep scratch on it from when I caught it in H2B trouser zip, when I thanked him for my ring. Whenever I see it now I have a little giggle to myself about it ;-)

Thanks very much for the comments and ideas. I discussed this with OH last night and we agreed we should try and get our wedding rings in a much more durable metal if we can afford it.

Palladium, Platinum and Titanium are all more durable than gold - but they'll still scratch.
If you buy them from a good jeweller they should polish them for you free of charge. Good aftercare is essential with all jewellery so make sure your supplier will clean and polish your rings whenever they need it.
CommentAuthorSpecialSundae
Mine was scratched long before I had it, as it was my grandma's. I'm having it checked, revalued and polished before the wedding and will wear my mum's engagement ring while that's done.
CommentAuthorpurpleme
mine is scratched also but where we got the ring from they do all the care for it cleaning etc also getting it insured is a good idea as alot of rings are expensive and that covers the cost as well if its not covered where u bought it from x
Cannt wait to be a Savage :-)

mine isnt to bad but i agree with jae, i dont think id have it re plated. I dont ever take mine off, im quite happy for it to look worn, as it is and i love it x
CommentAuthorRags
mine is ready for a dip but want to hold off, our jewelers said that they'd dip it for free (or what ever the process is). My wedding ring will be white gold too, but seen as tho I work with my hands and can only wear a plain band for work I may even have a cheap yellow gold ring for work purposes and then everyother day I can wear my nice rings.
I'm now a married woman
I have a gorgeous husband
Whats to do now
Theres no more wedding planning to do
CommentAuthorsuzky123
i got platinum e ring and that is scratched too... its daft as its hard wearing but still soft... it mean it still needs repolishing but unlike gold, it does not lose any metal atoms... just moves them around.

My Engagement ring is white gold, I was only thinking the other day that it was a bit scratched when Ive only been wearing since 15th Feb this year, It was made by a jeweller in Goa, its top quality dont get me wrong I will email him and ask him if he can re-alloy it, I do take it off when I am gardening or heavy cleaning jobs also when washing my hair, apart from that it stays on, true the scratches do give it some history but I will get it re alloyed again before our wedding day. Is there a limit to how many times you can have a ring re-alloyed? just a thought. : ) xx
