    hey hun!

thats unfortunate :S You can get a passport in your married name 3 months before the big day HOWEVER you are not allowed to fly as it is not valid until the day of your wedding :( So i think you may need to renew it twice :( but you can keep your passport in your own name im sure as long as you remember for the next few years to book your holidays in your maiden name.

There will be more information on the direct gov website that should help you xx

You're between a rock and a hard place here i'm afraid...

I'm afraid you can only put your married name on your passport for, I think, three months prior to your honeymoon departure-but even then you cannot use it as the passport office will post-date it to become valid when you depart.

The only option you have, is to renew it on you maiden name and use it for your hen do, and change it afterwards. Bloody annoying i know, as we are in the exact same situation as you. £80 odd just for a PP name change, yet the DVLA will do it for free

No education for bureaucrats is there?;-)

you do, but some airlines won't accept passport with a certain amount of time left-I think it's two months.

You should think carefully about whether to change the name on your passport before the ceremony or wait until you've returned from a foreign trip.

This is because the name on your passport should match the name in which you booked your travel. If the name on your passport does not match the booking:

some countries may not let you in
some travel companies may not let you board their flights

This may be the case even if you carry your marriage or civil partnership certificate with you. You should check with your travel agent or the consulate of the country you plan to visit.

IPS can change the name on your passport up to three months before the ceremony. They will cancel your old passport and issue you a new one. But the new passport is 'postdated'. This means you cannot use it before the day of the ceremony. Some countries will not issue visas for postdated passports. You should check with the consulate of the country concerned.

If you decide to amend your passport before the ceremony

To amend your passport before the ceremony, you need form (PD2) and leaflet (PD1) 'Passports for Newly Weds and Civil Partners'. These documents explain what you need to do - you can get them:

by downloading them as PDF files
from Post Office branches that offer the Check & Send service
    from any Regional Passport Office
by calling the IPS Passport Adviceline 0300 222 0000 to get them sent out to you

The form should be completed partly by you and partly by the person who is to conduct the ceremony. The leaflet explains this in more detail.

Download 'PD1 - Passports for Newly Weds and Civil Partners' leaflet (PDF, 141K) Opens new window

Download 'PD2 - Passports for Newly Weds and Civil Partners' form (PDF, 110K) Opens new window

    Help with PDF files

Find your nearest Check & Send Post Office (choose 'passport checking service' from the dropdown list) Opens new window

If you decide to amend your passport after the ceremony

If you want to amend your passport after your wedding or civil partnership, you only need to complete the standard passport application form. You will also need to send your marriage or civil partnership certificate to IPS.

Order a marriage certificate (government, citizens and rights section)

Order a civil partnership certificate (government, citizens and rights section)

The Civil Partnership Act - changing your name on your passport

The Act came into force on 5 December 2005. It allows adults of the same sex to enter into a legally binding civil partnership. IPS accepts civil partnership certificates to show a change of name.

I work for the PO - basically, you will have to renew in your current name if you intend to use the passport between the time it runs out and your wedding day. Then you will have to renew it again in your married name, so you will be spending £77.50 twice.
If you don't want to use it before your wedding day, in the last 3 months (I believe) before your wedding, you can go into the PO and get a form specifically to get your new passport in your married name. The registrar or vicar etc has to sign to confirm that you are booked to be married and if something prevents you marrying you will have to inform the passport office immediately and return the new passport.

    its to prevent idenity fraud
all new applicants have to go through an interveiw

Only adults who have never before had a British passport in their own name need to attend an interview.

If you had your own passport as a child you will not need an interview, as your application is classed as a renewal. If you didn't have a passport as a child (or were only ever included on a parent’s passport), you'll need to attend an interview.

If you were born on or before 2 September 1929, you may not need an identity interview. The Identity and Passport Service (IPS) will decide whether they need to interview you after they receive your completed application.
Call for advice if you have any questions

For further advice on the passport interview process, call the Passport Adviceline on 0300 222 0000. The line is open between 8.00 am and 8.00 pm Monday to Friday and 9.00 am and 5.30 pm on weekends and public holidays.

How the interview affects your application

You need to apply for your passport in the usual way, using the standard application form and sending it to IPS.

Staff in IPS Regional Passport Offices will establish that your identity exists and that you are entitled to a British passport. This will include checking independent sources such as the electoral roll and address histories. In this way, they build up a ‘biographical footprint’ that will be used in the identity interview.

You will then get a letter asking you to phone IPS to make an appointment for an interview at one of their interview offices. You can choose any office, but you may not always be able to get the exact time or date you want.

In some remote areas, IPS can arrange local interviews. If you live in one of these areas, a member of IPS staff will explain this when you phone to make an appointment.
You should allow more time when applying

First-time adult customers should allow more time than in the past to receive their passport. IPS recommends you submit your application six weeks before you need to travel.

Do not book any travel arrangements until you have received your new passport.
No Fast Track or Premium services for first-time adult passports

Because you must attend an interview for your first adult passport, you can't use the Fast Track one-week or Premium one-day services.
    What the interview is like

The interview takes about 30 minutes and is done in a friendly manner. Mostly you will be asked to confirm facts about yourself – facts that someone trying to steal your identity may not know.

IPS destroys any personal information used in the interview shortly after the passport is issued.

For any of you ladies just wanting to get a new passport to travel in your married name on your honeymoon, i did it and i thought it would be an absolute nightmare...

It was so easy, your registrar needs to sign a PD2 form which you can get at the post office for free, and you need to send it with your passport form....All i will say is, its not made very clear how to fill in the form, you must fill it all in in your married name and if you need a countersignature on your photo, make sure they are clear to write it as your married name.

I sent mine off via check and send on 4th April and received it the 12th April..

The registrar keeps part of the PD2 and if for any reason you dont get married they send it to the passport office so it becomes invalid....

( and i was really excited to travel as a mrs 2 days after our wedding.....;o) )

    Hope it helps x x x

i was told today by the travek agent to book the honeymoon in my maiden name and then i dont need to do anything to the passport until it comes close to its expiry date if that helps. Therefore you can go on hen but you also need to travel with maiden name on honeymoon.

Mine's going to be fun, lol. I have never had a passport... I took my step father's name without being legally adopted, I've been married, divorced, getting married again and have no documents to link me as my birth surname with my name after I was 10. I know very little about my real father. I'm going to have to send a barrage of certificates, including my mum's marriage certificate. At least I've been trained in PO passport check n send, so I will hopefully get it right first time, lol.
Thanks for the info about the interview.

My passport still has three years left on it, I was going to get a new one in my married name, but you only get a maximum of 9 months extra over the 10 years for any ammount over 9 months left on your current passport. Seeing as I've paid for those three years I'm going to wait until it's time to renew it beofre I get in my married name, so I'll be leaving everything else too.

Did you know that you can send someone else to go for your interview for you? The passport office was telling me when they thought that it was the first time I was applying. As its not the first I didn't have to go for the interview so I managed to get mine back yesterday! it took about two weeks to come through which is pretty good. You can get your registry office or vicar to fill in the PD2 form before the three months so it is ready to send off when the three months comes up. If its your first passport always allow six weeks min for it to come through but ideally longer.

If you want to go away with your passport before the wedding then you do realise that when you go to change your name you have to pay the full £70- what ever the amout is again to do this and you will only get 9 months extra time on it for the one you pay for now. It crap but its the way it works. If I were you I would hen night it in the UK and just renew in your married name. Either that or you will be stuck with your maiden name for the next 10 years unless you want to pay double.

I am in a very similar position. My passport Expires in March 2013 and our wedding is in December 2012 in South Africa. Is there a legal person that we can talk to other than the post office to check things out?
