Hello, me and my H2B are keen to go away and get married and are even thinking about just doing it without telling anybody as we just don't want a big fuss.
I would like to know if anybody on here has done it and would like to know the reactions of parents / family / frineds when you have told them?
These are just initial thoughts but there must be people out there who have done the same thing?? x

I agree, it's your big day and you should have it how you want it.
Some friends of mine did the same, their parents were a bit surprised for a start, but so pleased for them, and helped to organise a bit of a party afterwards so still felt involved.
Personally I think my dad would be quite pleased after the initial shock! He's not a very weddingy person and is nervous about giving me away etc so would be a bit relieved if I did the same, lol!!

We were going to get married in Hawaii on a beach and not have anyone there (so I guess an 'elopement'). My mum didn't care! Said she was 'relieved' (nice!). I'm the youngest of 4 so that made a difference. H2B's parents were upset at first but then fine with it when we said we'd have a little party when we got back. In the end, we're staying in England though.
I think they'll understand as long as you have a nice meal and little celebration as after-party? Maybe have a slide show of your photos or something? Bit more tricky if you're doing it locally though, they might react differently?

We are going to Kos next year just me and my fiancé! OH parents were a little upset at first, my parents just said they knew it we would do it that way!! Explaining we were having a blessing & party when we got back cleared the air & now everybody is just excited to see the photos when we get back! xx
Hi hun, I got married abroad last month, but i went abroad because of family kicking off, we were having no guests although our mums turnt up which was an amazing supprise, my dad went mad but thats only because he hadnt won, if that makes sence.. my dad is very selfish & petty!!
Ether way hun its your wedding, you must do what makes you & your H2B happy xx

we were going to do it in canada when we went years ago but mil was diagnosed with breast cancer and h2b decided he couldnt do that to his mum. we would of still liked to of went and done it ourselves but there was a risk of health issues etc so decided to wait and stay here.
i would personally say if its what you want then do it. but what i would do is give them the option of being there but they make their own way as its what you want.
good luck xxx
All the ways of my life id rather be with you.
Theres no way without you.

Thankyou for all your lovely messages. I don't think we could do it without our parents so have decided to look at small venues in the uk. Gretna is looking pretty good!
Thanks x

We did Gretna as well Samantha. We had a small wedding and just had close family (19 of us including me and hubby). If you're considering it, check out The Gretna Wedding Bureau. They can organise just about everything for you (you personalise your package). We booked with them, but booked other things like transport, cake, flowers etc ourselves.
It's really good up there - we had a perfect day!!

Have to say I am glad you have decided to do it with your parents there. I know that mine would be heart broken if they werent there to see me get married, and h2b's parents would be too. Gretna is a lovely place for weddings though! I hope you can have the day that you wish for xxx

I think a small wedding with your parents wil be lovely. Personally I couldn't do it without my family and close friends with us. My parents would never forgive us but for us weddings are for family.
I've been to Gretna when I was a kid and always remember seeing a bride and thinking how lovely and happy she looked. Hope that you have your perfect day. xx
Married the love of my life on Saturday 11th May 2013 xxx

my parents are no longer with us, so that's not an issue for me. h2b's parents aren't going to be there and i don't really think they're too bothered. his dad is trying to see if he can afford to come out, but his mum is afraid of flying. one of his sisters and my sister and aunt are coming out with us. in total there will be 14 of us (my cousin and his family might be coming too, which will add 3 but still just a maybe)
originally we were just going to go away ourselves, with the kids, but people wanted to come.
we're having a blessing and big party when we get back, so family and friends will get to see us say our vows and celebrate with us
I'M MARRIED!!!
I am now Mrs Bananaman!!!!

My parents kicked off because we are not going away. His parents kicked off because of the lack of a church. Basically you won't please everyone so just do what will make you and h2b happy and eventually everyone will come round to the idea. That goes for venue, colour scheme, everything lol

Thanks for all the imput. My h2b is determined to keep it small but a lot of venues cater only for big weddings! if its not one thing its another!! Oh well, it keeps me busy!
