I went to the doctor yesterday as i am due on my period around my wedding day. either that day or within 2 days. they sometimes vary in length.

i am also going on honeymoon for 2 weeks after the wedding so dont want to be on then either so he gave me norethisterone tablets. i have to take 3 a days for 2 days before my period is due and then 3 a day until they finish. he has given me 42 tablets which is enough for 2 weeks so i will finish them on a thursday but dont fly home until the following monday.

Do you think that will be enough or do you think i will come on while i am away still and ask for another few tablets?

    xx

I went to the doctors for the same thing and he said that doctors don't like to give more than about 10 days worth due to the high concentration of hormones. Maybe ask your doctor? I have got 10 days supply and my doc is very reluctant to give anymore than that!! He also said that I won't get my period straight away after stopping taking them but about 3 -4 days after I stop so that would take you up to when you fly home wouldn't it???? xxx

If you havent tried them before, I would say to defo try them out before your wedding/honeymoon.

The pain on stopping them can be terrible, so stock up on strong pain killers.

Yeah, I've had these before and it took 3-4 days after the last one to come on. Just be careful though hun. They are really strong and I was a complete emotional wreck when I was on them, but then again, I was before I went on them - my hormones were all over the place! Hx

I was prescribed them for my breasts (whole other story) granted I was on a high dose, but when they changed me from them, I thought my tummy was being constantly stabbed and I was crawling on the floor in agony. DOnt want to put you off :-s just let you know how terrible it was for me :-(

oh...doesnt sound good! i will bear that in mind. last year i was on on holiday and it was ok but my periods have been really bad the last 5 months so think i will see how bad the next 2 are and then decide if i need to delay it or not.

i dont really want to put hormones into my body so will decide nearer the time. at least i have them if i need them xx

Have you considered going on the pill for a few months? As others have said, I didn't think you could take them for longer than a week or so; I would read the leaflet carefully when you pick them up, and maybe speak to your pharmacist.

I'm on Cerazette as I can't really have periods due to endo, and love it; I bled for the first 2 weeks, and have had nothing since, and I've been on it for 14 months now, it's a god-send. Plus, it leaves your body quickly so is good for women who want to TTC in the near future.

I can't take the pill because I get migraines. I don't want the mini Pill because it doesn't agree with me which is why I am on the non hormonal coil.

I really don't want any hormones in my body really because we are going to start trying to conceive in jan but think this is the only option really xx

I am so glad I found this thread - was just going to start one on the same topic lol. I have been to the doctors today and got a month's supply of tablets as I am having my hen do (at a spa) on 7th June, and my wedding is on 19th June. I came off the pill in January 2010 and had a non hormonal coil fitted in the June as I didn't want to keep pumping hormones into my body (we are going to start trying for a baby in the new year). Tbh, since having the coil fitted I have had a nightmare with my periods, they are very heavy and painful and I'm lucky if I get 2 weeks break between them, then heavy periods for about 9 days each time :-( I was really worried as I was likely to start on my hen do AND around my wedding day!! I'm a bit worried about the side effects after reading some of your comments but hopefully I will be ok. I start taking them this Friday so hopefully before the wedding I will know if they are ok.........

Katkin! Remember its not the same for everyone hun so try not to worry too much! Its like when you take the normal contraceptive pill or even headache pills! Everyone will have something they react too but it wont necessarily be that!! If you have any concerns speak to your doc!! I spoke to mine about when to take it as my periods can come up to 4 days before or after they are due and he worked it out for me!! :) xxx

i was given a 3month supply by my gp but that was too stop my extrremely heavy menstrual cycle that lasted 4months! they had to put a stop to the bleed while i waited for my ultrasound and then the results etc!

i think the limit provided by your gp is to the gps discretion!

I would just chance it coz you wont start your period immediately.. your body will have excessive hormones for a good few days so you may just make it home without needing any more! xxxx

I have taken these tablets for 7 months constantly :( i am diagnosed with having PCOS (polycistic ovarian syndrome) i was constantly flooding....and i mean flooding (had to buy a new sofa because of it) not nice to say the least!

after many proddings, probings and ultrasound scans, PCOS was the primary cause of this, as i was losing so much blood on a daily basis, i also had to have iron injections and these northisterone tabs. At this stage i didnt think anything would be able to help me other than a hysterectomy....which at the age of 29 (at the time) i refused and decided to carry on and see what happened.

After 2 days of taking 3 tablets a day, my seriously heavy bleed had completely stopped! i had to go to my doctor often to have my bloods checked and pressure monitered, but did not have any side effects at all related to the tablets...even after all that time taking them. Yes they are exessive, and i would not recommend taking them for a long time unless you really need to.

When i initially stopped taking them even just missing 2 tablets, i would start spotting again, so that is why i used them for a long while.
I am pleased to say, that my doctor tried lots of different methods to help me, and finally found a contraceptive pill i could take which was cerazette. This managed my periods effectively and i am now much better.....PCOS symptoms are made worse if you carry extra weight i was told, so i worked my backside off and lost some weight and i truly recon that has also helped me become regular again.

Sorry for the waffle but i want ppl to realise why i was on the pills for such a long time :S when i came off the pills i did not experience any side efects at all....infact i lost weight! all good. xx
I hope they will be ok for you. I do take them once in a while now, like if i am away and due on, i just take a few tabs and hey presto...like magic x a couple of days after stopped taking them, i then get my bleed.

katkin- you sound just like me! i was on the mini pill, but didnt want hormones in my body as we are going to start trying for a baby in jan so went on the non hormonal coil. i have had it since dec now. when i had it fitted i bled for 6 weeks constant so i went to the docs and they gave me norethisterone tablets to stop the bleeding which it did. i then had a period after i finished them. i have since had 2 more periods but i can not tell you how bad they are. i have to take painkillers but am still in constant agony. so much so that i can hardly move and i feel sick and they are so heavy. i have to use super plus tampons and change them every couple of hours. even when i was on no contraception by periods were really heavy and painful but not to this extent.

my doc did give me a precription for a tablet that i am meant to take to reduce my bleeding and pain but because it is hormones i refuse to take it.
i have these norethisterone tablets to take jsut before the wedding to make sure i dont come on as i really would not be able to cope!
h2b is so annoyed at the doctor because i suffer so bad!

my periods were regular about every 35 days but last couple of months they have been all over the place. i was due on on monday but still nothing. when i think i am due on i have to use sanitary towels just in case i do come on because i am that heavy and i get severe cramps and feel sick for about a week before my period starts! drives me mad!

When i was on these tablets before i did not have any side effects either. it is the same as any medication some people have reactions and some dont but legally they have to let the person taking them know what side effects can occur!
i dont really want to put hormones into my body but have no choice as cant have a period on my wedding day/honeymoon!

    sorry to have gone! xx

Mrsbarkertobe, sounds like your periods are a nightmare - very similar to the problems I have! I was fine taking the pill but that isn't an option now we are going to start trying for a family in the new year. Since I came off the pill and had the coil fitted in June last year I never know when my period will start so I am like you, taking precautions just in case I get caught out. It sucks :-(
I have decided to start taking the norethisterone tablets tomorrow as I don't want to leave it too late and my period starts - I don't know if the tablets would stop it if I had already started! Would be so much easier if I had the damn coil removed and just had unprotected s*x to see what happened lol. I would be happy to leave it up to chance but h2b wants to wait! Grrrrr

I was put on cerezette and thats looking like the cause of my problems! Before i took it i was regular as clockwork took that for a very short time (about 2 months) Stopped my periods completely took about 12 months to have my period when I got it OMG! The pain i was in and the bleeds were horrendous heavy clotting, soaking through towels about every hour I was so scared as this carried on for 2 months (couldnt get a docs appointment!) Then ended up taking a trip to the hospital at xmas becuase of it (on the day I got engaged too :( )
Northisterone have helped me twice before and today been given another course of them :/ :(

    Cerezette ruined my life :'(

Mrsbarkertobe - I used to take Norethisterone when I didnt need my periods to appear suddenly as they used to be really heavy and painful and was literally draining me of energy, I was a little nervous of taking them at first but after spending long periods on them I suffered no ill effects and found that even if I did take them for short periods ie less than two weeks (which was extremely rare for me) It used to take about a week for my period to start once I had stopped taking Norethisterone.

Kevs Angel - I can truly sympathsise with you - although every womans is different, my periods were nothing but hassle from the on set, Im pleased to see that it looks like yours have slowed down now, when mine finally did that it was a blessed relief as you would know too well, looking at what you went through.

Mine however didnt slow down on their own, after having my twins I made the hard decision in 1999 that I would tell my doctor I wanted a hysterectomy, but we all know what doctors are like, you cant make decisions on what happens to your body, or what operations can be done to improve your quality of life more, he didnt want to do that, instead I was sterilised ( like he thought that was going to make it better!!) nope it didnt, again amazingly enough my doctor said that I was too young and I may want more children, hmm !! at the time I had had three children I was approaching 32 and was in a volatile relationship, somehow I didnt think I was going to have any more children with my now ex. But doctor says no!! still wont do a hysterectomy now I was put forward for a endrometrial ablation - sounds gross but they microwave the lining of the womb which in most cases (apparently) makes periods lighter less painful and more bearable, however there is a small percentage of women that dont see any change, yes youve guessed it I was one of the few that didnt see what iota of a difference : ( it was a painful experience to say the least) After a few months of periods occuring like buses ( nothing for ages then three periods come at once) and my monthly cycle I then renamed ' my fortnightly ' I decided enough was enough, I told my doctor I would camp on his doorstep until I got what I wanted, it was my body and I should be able to make decisions on what is right for it- he put me on a waiting list for a hysterectomy!! -- hooray at long flipping last. 6 months later I had it. I felt somehow sad afterwards my womanhood gone so to speak but on the bonus side I will never have another period again. Oh joy Oh bliss.
Obviously if you are just starting out on the baby making route or you are far too young to be going through all that its a different story - doctors have to sort medication out for you.

I know im ranting on but last things i will say is if you want a hysterectomy fight your doctor for it, pursue them, its your body after all you should know what you want, dont give up until you get results. Sorry mods for the rant. : (

i think it is stupid that doctors dont listen to what we want! but am glad that everything is sorted for you know claire.

i have been having server cramps since last saturday and thought i was coming on. i track my periods on an app (thought i had lost it last night but managed to get it back) and i was due on on monday. my average cycle is 36 days but i am now 4 days late and it is driving me mad!

mrsmillertobe- when i first had my coil i was bleeding constand for 6 weeks and i went to my doc and he put me on norethisterone to stop the bleeding and it did work. i was only on them for a week i think but it was worth it. i know there can be side effects but that is the same with any medication you take. i didnt have any problems while on them! i would seriously try taking them. can your peiods can any worse? if the answer is no then i think they are worth it.

my h2b hates seeing me in so much pain and cant understand why i have such bad cramps that i can hardly move at times and has told me to change docs to his which is what im going to do. he doesnt understand why i get cramps for about a week before either and to be honest neither do i. when i do come on the pain continues even with feminax ultra so for about 2 weeks i am feeling like sh*t and it drives me mad xx

im not allowed to use these tablets anymore due to my warfarin, but have used them previously and it generally takes 2-3 days after use for any bleeding to start a bit like with a pill break.so if you finish thurs you should nt start to bleed untill sat/sun at the earliest.if your worried though you could take half the tablets have a day break then take the other half that should guarentee no bleeds till your back.xx

Cerazette was awful for me too! Luckily I have a regular cycle (give or take a few days) the best thing I ever did for me was not take hormones! After having my twins my periods were heavier but seem to be pain free so for now I will leave it be! Wondering what will happen when I take these tablets to delay my period in July however I seem to have come on 4 days before Im due the last two cycles so if thats the case I will be finished by the time my wedding day comes around will have to play it by ear I think! :S It sucks to be a woman sometimes! xx

could i just add...and not to scare anyone...i know its frustrating dealing with periods on holidays etc and doctors dont seem very understanding with giving longer supplies to stop this but i was put on the pill dianette[quite a mild contraceptive] at the age of 15 [im now 27] for heavy painfull periods.i also used the mentioned hormone tablet to stop bleeding quite often for holidays etc.last year i had a very near fatal pulmonary embolism which the doctors believe is down to my long term hormone consumption from the pill.like i said i dont want to scare antone, everyone is different and some people need hormone contraceptives to stop them from excessive bleeding etc.but this is often why doctors can be reluctant to over prescribe these things ,i am now not able to take any contraceptive or drug containing hormones and its frustrating but i know now the doctor has no choice.x

Ive been on Dianette and my doctor told me that they don't like to prescribe it for more than 2 years without a break due to the risks you have mentioned and also because it can increase the risk of PCOS! Seems to me that its luck of the draw where doctors are concerned and it depends really whether you have one clued up on contraceptives etc or one that has a different field that they specialise in! Luckily my doctor specialises in contraception/gynae etc and seems to be well informed.

Hopefully we can all get sorted but don't forget you can always get a second opinion from a different gp if your not happy!! :) xx

Hi, I have been taking this stuff for years to be honest on and off 26 years . Ive never had any probs with it. I take it 6 months at a time then have a weeks break. If you miss a dose there is a high possibilty you will spot and unless you then increase the dose for a couple of days you will continue to spot till you let your period come. As for how many you need well remember that you will come on the third day after the last pill so make sure your doc gives you enough to last till the last day of your hols.
