I got my engagement ring from a popular highstreet jeweler in september and i love it : white gold with 18 small dimonds but it has gone yellow already :( Ok im not gona lie I was prepared for the white gold to go yellow but i was thinking more of years down the line not months and they wanted to charge me £36 for it to be re-coated which i think is awfull. Has this happend to anyone else?
CommentAuthorMrsGrant2B
i have had it happen to another ring i have which is white gold. i was told that it would re-coating at least once a year
CommentAuthorMrs Q - Weegie
Yep it does happen. do you wear your ring all the time? See I wear mine in work wen doing dishes ect ect so think it wears away more quickly saying that i usually get it done about twice a year, I'd say shop around the independent jewlers will do the replating for less x

I've had my E ring 18 months, it's white gold and I haven't had to have it re-dipped yet. I thought it would look quite yellow against my wedding ring and was planning on having it re-dipped soon but there isn't any difference at all. It's still looking perfectly white gold but I am really careful with it, I never wear it when washing up, showering/bath, doing hair and make up, I even take it off when using nail polish remover and it's def made a difference. I know they tarnish over time but I didn't think it would happen that quick, 2 months is a really short space of time so I would pop in to the shop and actually complain and demand they re-dip it for you. x

If it's 9 carat it goes yellow quicker than 18 - everyday use would be about once a year but you can reduce this by not wearing it all the time like Melody says. You should definitely ask why it's gone like that in 2 months though, and when asking around I heard it was about £20 to get re-dipped in rhodium not £36?

I wear my ring everyday - I even wear in the shower, doing dishes etc and it is only just starting to get a bit yellowish on the bit under my finger. I might get it re-plated for the wedding but as the top of the ring is still perfect I'm not sure if I'll bother.

I wonder if its the same place i got mine from ....we bought it on 22nd may, and its been on my finger ever since, unfortunately it has gone quite yellow tinged already, when i get round to it i will be taking my self...and my ring back to the jewellers and demanding they re-dip the ring in rodium twice (double dipped) i think they can do this as there was obviously not enough on there in the first place, i dont have a job where my ring takes alot of stress at all....so there is no excuse for it really as it cost £900! xx
CommentAuthorClareS
I wear my ring most of the time except for when washing the dishes/showers etc. It's 18 carat white gold and been wearing it since christmas day 2010. It's only just starting to yellow on the underside. Have got an appointment tomorrow with smooch and going to discuss maybe having the stone reset in palladium as we're thinking of getting palladium wedding rings x
CommentAuthorSweetchilli
I have never heard of this before but I wear yellow gold. My son has just bought his gf a 9ct white gold ring, I will have to mention this to her just in case she thinks there's something wrong with it.
CommentAuthorsmooch
If I may I'll explain why White Gold goes yellow and what you can do about it.
White gold is yellow gold mixed with other metals to make it whiter. then it is plated with Rhosium to make it REALLY white.
There are two main types of white gold
Type one - which is used for 9 carat White Gold and cheaper versions of 18 carat White Gold. This uses SILVER to make the gold whiter. But its still quite yellow until its plated with Rhodium. Rhodium wears off quite fast and the pale yellow shows through.
Type two - which is used for top quality 18 carat White Gold like ours. This uses Palladium to whiten the gold and looks much whiter even before the rhodium plating.
So if your White gold stays looking white its probaly got Palladium in it.
To avoid the yellowing process you should not wear your white gold rings in pools or hot tubs - the chlorine attacks the rhodium. And avoid abrasive cleaners etc. Don't wear your ring on the beach - its like putting it in sandpaper!
I'll talk to our workshop and see if we can come up with a special price for UKBride members to replate your rings with White Gold. If we get enough people who want it I think we'll be able to get the price down to about £20. Stand by!

i got my engagment ring in july 09 and although i noticed that it had gone yellow underneath but not on top i just left it. i had it done july this year so 2 years and it looked so much better. now 4 months later against my wedding ring it looks underneath next to wedding ring but im just going to leave it as it is fine on top.
CommentAuthorMrsMelodyWalker
Beaverbrooks charge £20, I think H Samuels charge the same. Some small independent jewellers only charge £15, my sister in law had hers done at the weekend. I wouldn't pay £36 that's for sure!

i have had my engagment ring since feb 09 and it has a very pale yellowish. but can barely see the difference cos it def palladium as im allergic to silver so had to pay even more to make sure i didnt have an allergic reaction my engagement ring. i wear mine all the time, unless im baking. dont wanna get it dirty.
thankfully the guy that is doing our wedding rings is also re-dipping mine on the day we get our rings as he is borrowing my engagement ring to shape my wedding ring perfectly round it xx otherwise it would have been £20 xx

thanks so much guys and smooch for your advise. I am just shocked that it has only been 2 months and it needs done again. The woman in the shop said it was because of handcream and perfume thing is i dont use either ohh well
Thanks again :D xx
CommentAuthorlows
It is true that alot of factors will effect the yellowing of white gold but even if you swan every day, used lots of hand cream and bashed it around it really should not have yellowed so quickly. Most engagement rings come with some sort of warrenty generally 1 year. This should cover the cost of the replating. If you dont have this cover then just stamp your feet and demand they replate it for free. x

If you used H Samual or Ernest Jones you get free recoating for the 1st year (same company) - if its them your talking about you should contact their head office. I was told it's best to leave the first re-coat for as long as possible as it fades quicker after 1st recoat. At only 2 months old you should go back and complain. Check sales of goods act as I think its not fit for purpose if fading so quick x
CommentAuthorShirleygirly
Thankfully my e ring is yellow gold and my wedding ring is yellow and rose gold so I won't have to worry. However I'm only collecting my ring tomorrow as h2b has been away so we only got it last week and it's been re-sized so as an interim measure I've been wearing an old white gold ring as a finger filler and I can't believe how yellow it has gone on the underside. I've had it about 4 years but only really started wearing it once we got engaged as it was more of a dress ring. I've got a feeling it was 9ct as it was less than £500 and has a 0.15 carat diamond. If I'd paid £900 for it and it was yellowing already I would be furious, especially if the shop that sold it to me were charging £36 to recoat. I agree with future mrs mac there is definitely cause for complaint if this is not included in your warranty. x

went and bought our wedding rings the oter day and it was only trying on the rings that i realised mine had gone slightly yellow. ernest jones are going to replate it for me for free leading up to the wedding ( they said it takes 2 weeks to be sent back). my friend pays £50 a year to get her wedding and e ring done and its what i expected to be honest. i think that although its a pain it will be nice everytime you get it done because it will feel like new! xx

i'm with melody for this one i take it off on a night while i sleep as well so that it you get warm and sweat it doesn't tarnish (its not proven but i just don't like to wear it when i get sweaty) i don't even wear it to the gym. got it dipped 18 months ago and its only just starting to turn yellow underneath but i won't be getting it re-dipped until a month before the wedding just do its all shiney new for the wedding and honeymoon

The problem is that the rhodium plating is VERY thin and will wear whatever you do. That's why it tends to go on the palm side of your hand first - becasue thats where you get most wear.
If you work it out £30 - £50 a year to have it redone adds up to a lot of money. That is why we recomend you buy the 18carat white gold with a high Palladium content. This type is much less likely to go yellow and in our case, if it does, we'll redo it for free. Other jewellers may also offer this service.
High Palladium content White Gold rings do cost more but within a couple of years you'll have saved the extra cost because you won't have to have it replated.

yep this happenned to me loads already had it 2 years now and im thinking that i will only have it recoasted for before the actual wedding! because it is expensive to keep getting it recoated especially as mine needs doing at least once every 3 months! apparently i have very acidic skin! xx hope you manage to get it all sorted out though xx

Ive had my white gold engagement ring for about 5 years and so far so good. I have not had to get it re-dipped as of yet but might do just before the wedding to give it an extra shine. It may help that I never wear it in bed, take it off when cleaning/washing up/bathing, also when I go to the gym/swimming. Other then that Ive always got it on! x
CommentAuthorRockabilly chick
Smooch, should the jeweller cover the cost if yellow is coming through? Its just my ring cost about £2000 from a jewellary shop (in oct 2010) and they had to put a bit in to make it bigger. The wee bit they put in is going yellow. Would they coat it for free or will they charge me? To be honest I hadnt really thought about it untill I saw this thread. I always take my ring off before cleaning, washing etc.

I have a white gold ring, but when we had it designed I spoke the the jeweller about the plating and she said it can vary between 3 months and several years depending on use etc. I chose not to have mine plated at all. I went for 18 carrot white, with a palladium mix. I'll have my wedding ring in the same. It does look a little bit yellow compared to coated rings, but I like the warmth it gives it.

CommentAuthorsmooch
@Soon2BMrsP - Thats the way to do it ;o) All sorts of things like cleaning products and cosmetics can cause problems and the chlorine in pools and hot-tubs is really bad for white gold.
@Rockabilly Chick We wouldn't charge if it was one of our rings but every jeweller works differently. :o(
If the repair that they did isn't performing as well as the original ring you have a very good case for them plating it free. In fact if it is changing colour faster than the rest of the ring they have not used the right metal for the resizing.
