H2B really wants a string quartet, which I have no objection too, but he wants them right through from the ceremony to the end of the wedding breakfast.
I think they will be too loud during the meal and will stop people chatting as easily so I'd prefer them to be there just for the ceremony, drinks reception and finish by playing during the receiving line for the wedding breakfast. I'd be happy with an acustic or instrumental love albulm on in the back ground during the meal.
What does everyone think?
I am also worried that if we had them right through there would be entertainment up until the end of the meal and then nothing until the evening party starts (probably 1-1.5 hours break) which to me (if i was a guest) would seem a bit odd and that's the part of the day when everyone gets most bored! Now also trying to rack my brains with something to entertain people during this time, maybe a quiz? We can't afford a magician or anything like that. Ideas welcome!!!

Hmmm i agree with you hun, it may be too loud for you and your guests to chat, and theres nothing worse than sitting through a meal without being able to hear yourself think, let alone talk lol hope you & your H2B can come to some sort of comprimise

I have a pianist playing throughout my ceremony, drinks reception and my wedding breakfast and although he is singing a few songs ( entrance of myself, exit of us both and a couple whilst guests are arriving) he is just playing quietly and only instrumentals throughout the wedding breakfast so its not intrusive and so that the guests can still talk amongst themselves and can still hear themselves think. I think it will be a nice touch to have some quiet music in the background but maybe a string quartet would be a bit loud hun, like you say if he does waant something in the background, maybe an instrumental love album would be a compromise

I think its a nice idea to have them while your eating if they play softly because it creates a lovely atmosphere rather then it just being blank x

I'm sure they have played through tons of wedding breakfasts so they will understand that people want to talk amongst themselves, so like Gabys said if they play softly it would be really nice. I think something in the background will be really nice , although i was unsure about my pianist, as I was thinking oh god its gonna be dead loud, everyone will be thinking whats the bl**dy racket lol but honestly I think it would be lovely xx
i haven't though of this to be honest. i have some live acts coming to do two sets, one during the break between the breakfast and evening up in the bar area and then they will play again a little later on
might put some instrumental music on my ipod and plug it in

i have bought a few instrumental cds and all the songs are famous love songs and are played on the piano - i think for the lot it cost me less than £10 and i got about 7 cds as i wanted some music playing softly while we all ate x

We are having a trio (same thing just cheaper) and we have them from guests arriving, walking down the isle, signing the register and for during the wedding breakfast!

were filling up the ipod with music for during the meal. its also going to be used during the ceremony and later when the guests are leaving and the band has stopped. why not, as mentioned before make up a mixed cd with songs you both like and have them playing in the bcakground that way people can still hear but talk to each other at the same time.... xxx

We're having a pianist all the way through, all the posh restaurants have live music quietly.... :) Ask the quartet you want whether they've ever done it before and they should be able to give you an idea about whether or not it's any good. Personally, I love the idea. Soooo classy

we're having a string quartet playing right through the wedding breakfast. Don't worry, they'll be able to play much quieter so that people will be able to talk :o)

For the wedding breaksfast we've made a playlist out of The Vitamin String Quartet - they do loads of really up to date songs, so we're just having that playing in the background

we are having the SQ right through until the end of the meal (letting them go half an hour before we get kicked our for the room changeover and so we can do speeches quietly). They are not too loud. Its not like having a singer or a band. The music is unobtrusive. Afterwards, we found a cariacturist to fill the gap but figured a lot of people will want to go to their rooms for a bit and check in so we are not too worried x

we're having a quartet for our ceremony and drinks, thinking of getting one of their cd's to play during the breakfast so will still be the same sound but just quieter so people can hear themselves talking lol x

I think it would be nice - could you maybe have a chat with them so that the pieces they do during the meal are a bit lower-key and less intrusive?

I dont know about yours but a lot of venues I have looked at include background music during the wedding breakfast anyway. In which case a sting quartet would just be a waste of money. However, if yours dont I do think you need something playing in the background during the meal to create some atmosphere. I dont think a string quartet will be too loud if the play softly xxx

Thanks everyone!
I'm not worried about them being too loud during the meal, they've done it loads of times and it will just be background music. My main worry was after the wedding breakfast they will be going and we have nothing planned between end of the meal and the start of the evening reception. I'm worried everyone will get board for this hour/hour and a half. Me and H2B will be having some more photo's done during this time but don't know what to do to entertain our guests, don't really have any more money to get an other entertainer in?!
