Looking for some help on this one. I really want to keep my maiden name as I've had it for 30 years, quite like it and it's who I am! Husband doesn't understand and doesn't want me to either just keep my name or double barrel it so the only choice I have left is to change my name by deed poll and have my maiden name as another middle name, which is ok and I'll live with as it will keep Husband happy and me sort of getting what I want.
The question is which way round do I do it?
Obviously I know I need to change my name with the bank, driving licence, council, etc to my new married name but do I do this before or after changing my name by deed poll, I don't want to have to change my name with everyone twice?!
So do I do deed poll first and then marriage certificate? But wouldn't that mean I changed my name to Zoe Rachel Rushton Rushton if I did it before changing it with my marriage certificate?!
My final name, if I do it like this will be Zoe Rachel Rushton Webster, it still sounds like I'm double barelling my surname but obviously I don't normally use my middle names so I'll be Zoe Webster.
HELP!

From the uk deed poll website:
Upon marriage it is traditional for a woman to take her husband's surname and abandon the use of her maiden name. To do this, a Deed Poll is not required. However, some women prefer to continue using their maiden name as a middle name. This allows husband and wife to share a surname which is especially convenient for financial and administrative purposes. It also means that both partners can maintain a link with their family name without having to double-barrel. When somebody chooses to use their current surname as a middle name upon marriage, they must apply to change their name by Deed Poll. This will allow them to have their maiden name incorporated into their new name. Once it has been executed, the Deed Poll document can be sent of to all relevant departments in order for their records to be updated. It will be accepted by all organisations including the Identity and Passport Office, as proof of the change of name. It is also possible for the man to take his wife's surname as a middle name, which results in the couple sharing a middle name as well as a surname. The same process as described above will apply.
There are so many people out there who will tell you
what you can't do.
What you have to do is turn around and say, "watch me"!!

i never even thought of that zoe. i really dont want to lose my surname either as it comes from my irish relatives and i love the fact that i am part of their heritage. I'd end up being Kelly Louise Deane Skinner. It doesnt sound that bad either. It does sound like it would have to be done twice dont it. So you would have to add your surname to your middle name first. Does this mean on the marriage certificate and when the priest/registrar says your name will they also have to say it twice? hmmm x
That's what i'm doing Zoe. Making Morgan a middle name. Let me know how you do it in the end! I was going to ask someone at the registry office.

Perhaps if you change name on marriage, then change by deed poll again to inc new middle name. Then the deed poll change is the latest change and you just send that document round? Or am I missing something?

Hi hun, so have you already got married? If so, I take it your marriage certificate states the name of Zoe Rachel Rushton? I would test it out by presenting your marriage certificate to the bank and saying that you are taking husbands surname but retaining your surname as a middle name. The information is all there on your marriage certificate so you may not need to get a Deed Poll. Also you need to be aware that there are Deed Polls and Change of Name documents. Change of Name documents are done between you and a solicitor and are cheaper, Deed Polls are officially lodged and retained forever, therefore more expensive xxx

Thanks everyone. I'm going to the bank this morning as we had a gift of a cheque made out to Zoe Webster, and obviously we don't have a bank account with that name on it! Smarties - although I'm married now my name doesn't officially change unless I actually change it, if that makes sense?! At the moment I'm still Rushton, the only way it changes is for me to send my marriage certificate round and ask for it to be changed to Webster. I'll ask at the bank today, but I'm not sure they will have heard this before and will prob only change my details to Zoe Webster. I'll let you know how I get on!

yes let us know hunnie, I've heard of this lots of times in my job and so i think the bank should have too but lets see :) xxx

The girl in the bank didn't understand, she just said "so you're double barrelling your surname?", it didn't matter how I tried to explain she just didn't get it and wouldn't put it on the documents so I had to give up and just change it to Zoe Rachel Webster. Half of me is thinking is it worth all the hassel?! But the other half is like "no rushton is your name and you should keep it, just cos you're married doesn't mean your husband owns you and you have to loose your name!"

I honestly think if you take your marriage certificate to the deed poll office, or however you do it, they will change your name to include both then you can show everybody both your marriage and deed poll certification and change it all at once.

You could do a change of name document with a solicitor (cheaper than deed poll) and use that to change your name on all your official things like bank, passport, driving licence. Dont give up hun, the woman in the bank oviously is not properly trained. I'm thinking of doing the same as you and there is no reason why you cant do it. In the UK a person can take on a name simply by usage and reputation but to prevent identity fraud all the official bodies want some kind of proof that you are one and the same person before changing their records on you. A name change doc to accompany your marriage certificate would most probably sort that out. Or alternatively try changing your passport / driving licence using just your marriage certificate and see how that goes. If your passport gets changed then you can produce that as evidence of your new name to the bank and there will be no need to do a name change doc xxx

Thanks! I'm going to sort out my driving licence next so I'll see if I can do that without a deed poll document.
