I've seen lots and lots of posts about dresses that people are buying, having made, having adjusted etc. But I don't think I have seen any posts at all about people renting their wedding dresses. I was thinking this might be a good option as I imagine it would be cheaper than buying one. Plus, you don't have to worry about what to do with it afterwards.

I can't say I have looked into this at all yet, so I don't even know if there are many companies out there who rent wedding dresses. What does everybody think? Do you have any experiences or feedback about this?

You can do this, a few years ago my auntie hired bridesmaid dresses for us - we all had the same material and pattern, and we all got fitted etc - made a lot of sense actually as another auntie bought me a heavy lilac satin 2 piece, with the idea that I'd wear it again - it was still hanging on the back of the door in a dress bag a few years later when I took it to the charity shop!

I wouldn't like to hire as I would be worried about damaging the dress all day and this would spoil my wedding.

That's a good point, but don't they have insurance to cover that...or would you have to take some out yourself, or pay a deposit that is not refunded if you damage it?

I wouldn't have any clue where to hire a wedding dress from? Every dress shop I've been to only sells or makes adjustments. Not a bad idea but if you've got a very specific idea of what you want (which most people seem to) I don't think there would be too much choice...plus you wouldn't be able to get your adjustments done properly so there's the risk that it wouldn't be fitted correctly.

The whole thing about a wedding dress is that it's solely yours, for your special day. I think this is why some people are reluctant to wear a dress that has already been worn?

my oh wants me 2 hire my dress but I've said 'no' 4 a few reasons and my main reason is cos I'm scared of ruining it! I also want my dress 2 b mine! I'm thinking of dying my dress and shoes after the wedding so I get more use out of it, but I'm gonna decide that once I get the dress!

I have to say, I never considered hiring. I have no issues with wearing a dress someone else has worn (mine is a sample, used in a photo-shoot), but I don't think I'd feel comfortable knowing it wasn't mine (I'd also be worried about damage), plus I'm super-fussy and I'm not sure I'd find anything I like. I also can't see dress-hire being particularly cheap (for a good dress anyway).

If I was on a budget, I'd probably get one from the high-street I think; or, look at sample sales/online sales, you can get dresses quite cheap if you get lucky. Or look at second hand; again, you can get them at good prices, and you could always sell it on after to get some of your money back.

i was going to hire mine but when i looked into the prices they were almost as expensive as buying one in the sale as the insurance on them is so massive that it really bumps the prices up!

I'm not sure if places hire them out like they used to the first time I got married (1988)

Dresses have a lot of embellishments on them these days that get damaged when cleaned I was told. The shop I bought my dress from said they didn't hire them because of this.

Am hoping my dress cleans ok after the wedding but I guess the once probably won't hurt but repetitive cleaning would definately damage it

I wouldve considered hiring until i heard that at my mums wedding someone spilt red wine on her dress and it wouldnt come out, which if hired wouldve meant extra costs. Plus i quite like the idea of keeping my dress for my daughter to wear or re use to make a christening gown or something.

i didnt think they did that these days. i dont think my dress shop does it as its just a wee shop and theres prob no room to store any. i dont think i could hire id be scared it get damaged then i myself would feel i had to get another dress for the evening to change into it so its another expense. nah id prefer to buy!! xxx

My dress shop does hire dresses i think its 50% of the purchase cost to hire
I got 20% off my dress so the difference between hiring and buying wasnt huge anyway for me - i would be worried like the others said about damaging it

There are so many people out there who will tell you
    what you can't do.
What you have to do is turn around and say, "watch me"!!

This is my second marriage and when I married the ex I couldnt afford much so I hired my dress and veil.
I managed to get a dress that was £1000 in the shops at the time for £320 :-)
I did find through the day I was terrified of damaging it and actually changed out of it pretty much straight after the ceremony which is one of my biggest regrets although i didnt have extra guests in the evening i did have some guests come up to me and say they wanted to look at the details up close but as i was no longer in it they couldnt :-(
Yes its a money saving idea but personally i wouldnt do it again.......another regret ive had since having kids is not buying the veil so i could pass it on to them when and if they get married in the furture!
this time I will be buying my dress and keeping it on as long as possiable

or buy preloved is always a cheaper option... after all they only get worn a few hours then are stored away :-)

(incidentally i am trying to sell mine so get in touch if you want more information about it :)
