I could not be without her but it gets me to discrimination against plus sizer. She's a size 28 to 30 and I don't want to get her an individual dress as I would like all me bridesmaids matching. On a slight rant too, all my other bridesmaids have offered to pay towards their dresses except her. I know she can't afford it but what do I do. Getting bespoke dresses for 4 bridesmaids is going to cost a fortune for me (150GBP each) otherwise, I could just get the others off the peg. We are on a real budget and want to try for a baby so I would rather spend the money on a future cot. Help!

mmm. it's a tough one, she doesn't have 2 pennies either although I am a bit upset that she must think that I am made of money for her. I asked for input from the girls and she picked out a dress that cost 192GBP!

I kind of broached the subject and she said that she cannot justify contributing to a dress that she would never wear again. I see her point but I can't pay for one and not the others. Especially as I am now having to look at more expensive dresses. I have my heart set on all the bridesmaids looking the same.

As for hiring, do you think that I will be able to get all the dresses the same? 1*14, 1*12,1*10 and 1*28-30. Will look into it.

Really am feeling like I'm in a difficult situation, might just bite the bullet as I want her there :/

Mmm, why dont you give her a budget and a design and ask her to pick out dresses that she likes in her size, then, you can find matching ones for the others. This might achieve 2 things, she will understand how much money you have, and she will realise how expensive dresses in her size are and she might be a bit more realistic about what she would like. If she wants something that costs more than the budget then you are justified in asking her to contribute. Its just a thought but you might get your point across without actually having to have a difficult conversation. Good luck hunni x

Yes, if I say 100GBP each then they can pay the difference though she might not go for that. I like the quality of the BHS dresses and I'm happy to pay for that (125GBP) but they are all quite small. I'm worried about the quality of internet dresses although you seem to get a lot for your money. Any experiences? xxx

Hi i have got the same problem hun, The dresses in The home store that is british are a small size, i took 2 of my bridesmaids there last weekend as they have up to size 22 but my bridesmaid that is an 18 couldnt zip it up and the bigger bridesmaid couldnt even get it on!! There is a wedding shop near me that stocks up to a size 26 in bridesmaid dresses so i am going there in a few weeks with them, the bigger 1 is on Sw but isnt really sticking to it and like you have said if you have to go to a plus sized shop then it wont fit the other bridesmaids! i am considering finding a seamstress and seeing what they will charge to make the dresses at least that way they will all look the same!! xx

Giving her a maximum price is a good way of doing it, but make it under what you're prepared to pay just in case she thinks it's okay to go a bit over! Expecting you to pay £200 is completely taking advantage of you!!

    I agree with OWB!

Also - getting them to pick out dresses they like would mean they could wear the dresses again & so it's much more reasonable for them to contribute financially :)
Otherwise I think hiring may be your best option Xx

Maybe get the 3 bridesmaid dresses from the same shop and get fabric for the larger girl and have it made by a seamstress. she should be able to re-create the same dress. You could even send a picture and measurements to china/Ebay and they might be able to make it fairly cheap.

I see her point in not wanting to pay for her dress to be honest, but then if you buy her dress she doesn't have any input and certainly not choosing her own......having to spend so much on her just because she is a big girl.....well her weight is not your fault is it?
If you are paying then you choose the dress, and if the bridesmaids are paying then they choose them.....simples.

If you really want her, and you know you will have to pay for her dress, then really you should pay for them all.

i can understand where you are coming from but there are ways round it. I will have 4 larger bms and two small ones but the dress i am going for is online and goes right up to a 32 so they are all the same and all under 60 quid each. To be fair just cause they are from abroad they will still look great and its only for a day. I am gonna order one at a time too to spread the cost.
I am a large bride too and my wedding dress was a right bargin too so it can be done, good luck x

I think you have 2 separate issues there - just because she's bigger doesnt necessarily mean the dress is going to be more expensive, the issue is finding a store that stocks the size. Why dont you try to find a store that has plus size bm dresses in, they might stock smaller sizes of the same dress?

The second issue is the price and contribution. Did your friend pick out the expensive dress before or after saying she couldnt justify contributing to a dress she wont wear again? Did she look at the price or was she pointing out dresses she liked to you? You dont need to feel under pressure - make it clear how much you can afford to spend and if your friend wants to be there for you she will be. May be worth getting some recommendations from the china dress thread here for cheaper, decent quality dresses x

its difficult because we all want to have our cake and eat it too! personally i think its really rude to ask someone to be part of the wedding and then ask them to pay for the dress you want them to wear, but I think its totally fine to have them pay for shoes, accessories, hair and make-up. I think if you're going for something like dessy then its always good to choose the colour and fabric but let them choose a style to suit them because they can wear it again then so its fair enough to ask for them to go halfers with you. If you can find a cheaper option definitely go for it though!

You can also get online compaines from china etc to make repluica dresses in whatever size you like quite cheap- but hard to know what quality/fit will be like. I think RaggedyAnne's idea of getting a seamstress to do hers is a good one.

Thanks for the link am looking at it now.

Just to throw a spanner in the works, spoke to the other bridesmaid today (friend) (I have 2 friends (above) and 2 family) and she said that she didn't want anything that she couldn't try on. She wants to pay for her own (but it seems like she wants to choose them all to one she looks best in). My family is happy with whatever lol, I'm pulling my hair out lol.

So, I've set up a facebook event so that they can all discuss with my budget and styles with a few links to things that I like... hopefully everybody will be happy lol.

Thanks again ladies, it's great to hear your ideas especially from others in the same predicament.

Personally as a plus size girl I would happily wear a slightly different dress in the same colour. It is common for the style of dresses to be different, as long as the colour matches I personally wouldnt care if the were different.
Things look completly different in different sizes and she may be completly uncomformtable in a dress that suits much smaller people :-)

    Thanks again fellow b2bs,

Massive help. I want her to be comfy so am going to let her choose something. She's been really excellent and gave me a spreadsheet with all the dresses that she likes all under 100GBP, perfect. Love her to bits. Like the idea of having one made because then you can be sure of quality but after all it is one day and one seamstress that we spoke to says that china quality is fine :) Suggested that she might like a different dress too and she was fine with it, as long as it will look nice (which it will!)

Other girl is being a bit picky as she wants to wear her dress again and get a really expensive one but pay for herself. So, have decided to pay for hers too, as, I was always expecting to and I don't want the theme/budget dictated to me. My family choices come first on this one. Love your points ladies, any other tips for the big day gratefully recieved :)))

Still really keen to hear about experiences from more voluptuous ladies and ladies with more curvaceous bridesmaids. Any more co. recs?

    Thanks loads,
    Olli

I have just sorted by bridesmaids out and the lady i have bought the dresses on wanted to sell all the dresses as a package so there is 4 dresses but i only need 3 and the 4th one is a size 26 but they have been made by a seamstress in the UK and they are really easy to take in or add to if you want some pictures i would be willing to send them to you. they are purple like your colour theme and i am wanting £60 for the dress as this is what i paid from the lady (well £240 for the 4).

    Hope i can help you.

It's all about the colour and fabric matching - if that's the same the style won't matter. One wedding i went to all the dresses were different as she had 5 bridesmaids, 2 children (one toddler, one teen) and three adults (size 6, 14 and 22) so it can be done as long as you get the same dress colour and material! xxx

    well im already havng probs!!!!!

OH sister is one of my 3 BM...she is already complaining and weve got 2 yrs to go!!!!! ive been looking at dresses to get style ideas, material and colour etc...
soooo.....i posted a couple of pix in our secret bookface group....my moh is having an ivory chiffon dress with navy sash and my other two r having navy chiffon with ivory sash etc.........
the ones i like are £169 which is out of the budget so am looking at the china ones and the bay etc........

    however.....

Chris went over to see his parents the other night and he said to her had she seen the pix on fb and did she like it, she said yes but said she wants to try it on first b4 its paid for, slight problem with that if i buy from china! then she asked y was moh getting all different and special stuff, which shes not but anyhoo...chris told her straight that she is chief bridesmaid n basically said what amy says goes type of thing and his mum turned to her and said "you will wear what your told too, its chris and amys day...get on with it!" (yeay!) she then went on to say that the chief bm was usually different anyway.........so i think she sulked a bit.....
tbh i can see her moaning about the dress anyway but tough poops, she doesnt have to b a bm if she dont want to!!!!
o and thats a another thing...apparently she also said her and the other bm will look odd if theyre dfferent and like there not supposed to be there!!! because in dfferent colours...when really moh would look the most odd if anything......FFS! i wonder y she didnt approach me? lol x

Hi Lil miss, feel your pain lol.

The book for faces has been a massive help to me (what a great idea) as I have been bluntly writing what I want, I'm a bit non-confrontational otherwise so this way no-one can argue... I think that i've toughened up bit too. I have 2 lovely girls that don't mind what they wear so the other two can just, well ... Would love them there, but if things were reversed I would put the bride first.

Remember, it's your day and don't tolerate anyone behaving not like you would.

Ahhhh I feel all your frustration too!! Iv got two bridesmaids and one I have no problem with as she offered to pay for her dress and we've both got same taste and she's a size 12 so should be easy to find a dress but my other bridesmaid won't tell us her size even though we know she is a plus size but she is also only 5ft 1" but won't wear 3 quarter length dresses as she thinks there not right for her. Every dress I have picked out she hates. I found one on eBay and I really like it and it's affordable and it has a return policy if not right but she's not even willing to try it! Arghhhhh!!!!! X

    Just keep smiling...x

Hi, I will be following this thread I think as I'm on the same boat.t BMs are sizes 10, 12, 18 and 28 I think. I initially wanted them to wear short dresses but one BM had a problem with this. As I'm paying for the dresses I may go down the china dress route so I can have them all matching. I'll have to see how difficult things get closer to the time. I hope there are no arguments! Xx
