I'd like my sister to be one of our witnesses but she's only 16, but I've got a feeling they might have to be 18. Anyone know? x

The law requires you to be accompanied by at least two credible witnesses at your wedding, these will sign the register after the wedding ceremony.

Witnesses may be relatives, friends or colleagues. They must be able to speak and understand English. Although there is no legal age limit to a witness, many civil ceremony attendances would prefer that the witnesses are 18 years or over. If one of your witnesses is under 18, they might ask that you provide an extra witness.

Tell your chosen witnesses in advance that you have chosen them for this special responsibility.

Just googled it for u x

suzie you say their is no legal age limit is that for england??, as my oh wanted his son to be his but his son is only 14, so has to have a second best man to sign the registrar make the speeches etc (basically he just doesn't want to call his son a groomsman - drives me nuts)

it said England online. He could be a witness too tho. We wanted one of our friends to be more than a bm because he means the world to us, so we checked it out and we're having three witnesses. As long as ur registrar knows bout it then they will allow space for 3. Could be an option for u x

thanks ill get oh to look into it 0 i might sound mean but i had told him not to make his son best man but a groomsman/usher with my brother - esp after he asked his friend to be best man, then a few months later he turned around and asked his son. When his son asked what he had to do , his dad said all you need to do is hold the rings, well that was me in an uproar , as i had said all along that my sons were pageboys and would be holding the rings. So will see if thats an option so he can play a part
