Afternoon Ladies! It's been a while since i put the deposit down on my dress and looking back at the pics i'm trying to figure out what sort of hoop i need. When trying on the dress the lady in the shop seemed to have an aversion to hooped petticoats anyway and i had to more or less say well in the other shop i was told to wear it so i'd rather try it with thanks! Now this is obvs much too long at the moment and will be altered and it's also not done up as this was the 3rd time of putting it back on when i could finally get some pics! So this is when i tried it on with a 1 hoop plain petticoat and the other is the model wearing the dress, as to how it should look, thoughts on petticoats needed please!!

I have no clue about hoops and such but I had a proper giggle at your file names for the model pics.

Personally i would go for a hoop less petticoat you definitely need a petticoat to give the dress that look of fullness at the bottom, if you get what I mean. But it all depends on how you feel and what you like.
CommentAuthorOfficially Mrs Nicol
You cud try an A line petticoat with 1 hoop at the bottom that wud sit it out 4 u.. :)
CommentAuthorsprucey83
so a hoop less one would be lots of net? I don't really know, i know it need bulking out to give it that full circle look and obvs will look different when lifted off the ground to the correct length but i don't want it to look saggy? xx
I had a hooped skirt and looked like i was walking on springs, so i removed the metal hoop and replaced it with layers of tulle.....(only because I had some , you can actually buy hoopless ones) and now when i walk its so much more natural looking.
and if you are worried that just layers of tulle alone without a hoop would be strong enough to hold your dress out......then here is my dress with the hoopless petticoat underneath

It depends on how full you want your dress to look, i think you can get them with just 2 layers of net. If you would rather have a petticoat with a hoop then I would say go for the one that Mrs Miller 2B suggests
CommentAuthorsprucey83
Okey doke so you mean something like this? lots of layers of net? Is it difficult to walk with lots of net Raggedyanne? Is it best to go try it on with a couple different petticoats and see which looks best? I know i don't need to decide these things yet but i want to feel like i have achieved something by sorting another little niggle out!

Hahaha! love the file names for the model pix. It's a gorgeous dress hun.
Personally I'm not a fan of hoops as I think they feel weird on and also look as RaggedyAnne described it. I think a netted petticoat will make the dress look fuller but at the same time when you move it'll look more natural how it falls and moves with you.

Feeling a bit flat about the dress as i don't really have pictures of it done up and fitting properly which makes me keep looking back at it with a little disappointment really, was thinking if i got a petticoat and asked to go try it on again with it that might make me feel better about it?! I hope anyway, bloomin skinny witch looks better in it at the moment! xx
CommentAuthorInDreamland
Oh hun, ignore the model, she's probably 6 ft tall and barely eats anything, plus they airbrush and stretch the image to make her look like that. I think you look lovely in the dress, it's gorgeous, just get the netted petticoat to under to give more shape to the skirt xx

The hoopped petticoats are cooler to wear because they keep the fabric off your legs, but IMHO thats the only bonus of them. My skirt has four layers, the lining layer thats closest to my legs, and then 3 ruched layers of stiff tulle, and thats enough to make it stick out how I want it, but you can get bigger ones of course. I find it easy enough to walk in, and rather than bounce along, I swish...... I dont get caught in doorways, and it doesnt have that un naturatural gliding look......like I am on wheels or springs.
With a hoop you have to be careful how you sit down or you might flash your bits......with a hoopless your dress just rests on your knees. it altogehter has a more appealing look to it when you are walking, and it feels better too. if you smooth your hand down your dress it feels soft and smoothe, whereas if you touched your dress and was wearing a hoop, the dress would rock to and fro.

Ok that makes sense, so i just get a net one with at least 3/4 layers of stiff net? Is it possible to end up being too big? or is that not really possible? my dress is v heavy i take it it won't just squash the net down? can you get one with a hoop but then take it out of not needed? xx

If you got one that was too big, its easy to just remove a layer of tulle .....just cut it. if your dress is heavy then maybe the pettiocat should be quite a few layers, and if there is enough then no it wont squish down.
Mine is the same size as this, its has 4 layers, but it works because my dress is just single layer satin, not too heavy....
of course if you buy a 6 layer one and its too full, you have the option to remove layers, but if you only buy the 3-4 layers, then you're stuck with that....unless of course you add some more tulle layers yourself which is what I did.

I have been having problems deciding on which to get for my dress too and the lady in my dress shop seems to be against hoops too but I definitely want something to give it a bit more fullness. After reading this post, especially raggedtannes comments, I think i will probably go for the extra layers rather than the hoop, as i dont want the "rocking back and forth" movement lol now its just decided how many layers i need, any suggestions would be appreciated, pics of my dress are in my album...sorry to hijack your thread xx

I have a petticoat one and a hoop, the hoop holds the material off my legs, it doesn't add any more volume to the dress than the petticoats already do, if that makes sense lol! Mine is a Jupon, the quality is superb, and the hoop is essential for comfort, a good combination is the key imho :)
CommentAuthorsprucey83
Yes i think i will definitely be going for layers of net i think its the fullness that's missing, further up rather than just hoop round the bottom, i think i might get a real think layers of net with poss a hoop at the bottom i can take out if i change my mind, as i did try on alot of heavier dresses with and without hoops and found it much easier to walk with a hoop, without it i found i kept kicking it out the way! but i deffo wont be going with a 3 hoop or anything think layers are the way forward! Fab dress btw! i hope you find one too! i'll post a link on your wall of something i found helpful earlier! xx
CommentAuthorJakesmummy
Ive been looking at Jupon and was wondering about the quality, i know they are expensive but like you say youve got to be comfortable, which style did you get hun, i was looking at 163 and 165 x
CommentAuthorphoebee
this is to Jakesmummy I have had a look at your dress, I suggest you probably should go for a 4 layer petticoat. You don't want to go to big.
CommentAuthorsprucey83
That's so strange Roxy a Jupon link is what i just posted on jakesmummys wall before i saw your post! think you are right, layers and one hoop! xx
CommentAuthorRoxy
They're defintley worth the extra, the material isn't rough or itchy or stiff, like the cheaper versions you can get. I can't remeber the code, there is 6 layers in it I think :/ 165 is ringing a bell! I got mine second hand of the bay and it was a bargain at £40, but I'm so glad I paid a little extra, I'd spent all that money on a beautiful dress no point cutting back for the sake of £20 on a petticoat that makes the dress!
CommentAuthorFernP61
Yeah i agree the bay of e ones from hong kong-china are cheaply made ive had mine brand new from the wedding dress shop for 50.00 it is worth looking at used or new from the bay of e but stay well clear of the china ones theres alot from uk sellers like jupon they are wekll worth the money they are asking as they are expensive its not nice buying one that doesnt fit you right or you have to adjust yourself alot of people have said the cheap ones rub and are made terrible x
CommentAuthorJakesmummy
Thanks Sprucey83, i'll have a look, Hope you get sorted too, the world of hoops and petticoats is mind blowing isnt it lol I didnt see one with 4 layers on the site i was looking on, the 163 had 3 layers which i didnt think was enough and the 165 had 5 layers which i though would be too much, like pheobe said i dont want too many layers, as i dont want to ruin the shape of the dress, so i think 4 would be perfect. Thanks for your advice x

my dress is very similar to yours and I have a single hooped jupon petticoat. xx

Well mine has just arrived from Hong Kong. Took almost a month to get here. On first inspection considering it only cost a fiver it looks ok. The bottom layer of netting is a little rough but for the pennies I paid quite happy. Needs changing from tie to elastic top but that wont take my mum long.
