The colour scheme for our wedding is green, white and silver, and i'm not into the shiny silky dresses that dominate the bridesmaid market. I'm [reasonably] skilled with a sewing machiene and have just had a thought; why don't I buy some material and make the dresses for my BM's & MOH? This way i can have exactly what I want, and make sure they fit the girls perfectly. My question to to the forum though; do you think the girls will mind having homemade dresses as opposed to fancy ones from a posh bridal shop? Is it worth the extra stress of making their dresses, or should I just buy simple green/silver dresses from Debenhams or somthing? HELP!! <3 x

Yeah the fact you made them yourself is so much more personal and to me, it is more thoughtful..!! I am sure if you make them in plenty of time it wont be stressful for you :o)

Ca Ca...if I could have done it I would!!!! Why not? You say yourself your capable of the basics....who knows they could turn out brilliant and you could offer your serves etc in the future to other b2b! I think it is a very clever idea, one that will not only save you money but allow you to have more freedom and choice over what you would like for the day! It also saves the stress of finding dresses that will suit all of your maids! I say get that thread out girl and get to it!!!! You have plenty of time to experiment and improve upon your skills before making the final dresses...I personally wouldnt give a hoot if I was told I had to wear a homemade dress!!! Good luck hun xxxx

im not buying my girls dresses from a shop as the ones i want cost between £120-£185 each and i need 4 ouch, so am buying the material and a friends mum is going to make them for me as i am crap with sewing lol, if i was any good i would make them myself think its a lovely idea and cheaper as well, dont think your girls would care at the end of the day as long as they look good it doesnt matter where the dresses come from, plus with u making them they are even more speical as u have had to put the time and effort into making them as perfect as possible for them xxx

i really hope they see it that way; ever since i picked, and they were told, theyve all been going on and on about shopping trips. It's fine; they can come pattern shopping with me! lol. Although dress patterns aren't cheap, i think you're right; the freedom offered is worth the effort. I work part time, as well, so i wil deffinatly have the time :] im so glad i thought of this, and thank you all for your support ladies :] <3 x

I think making your own is a very smart idea - if I had the skills I would def doit!! It's lovely to have a personal touch.

And it will (hopefully) be soooo much cheaper than buying them

Well I'm definately gonna say "go make them girl", if uv got the skill to do it urself then why pay a shop price for something ur not overly keen on or could reproduce urself for a fraction of the cost!! Funnily enough my colour scheme is the same as yours- is green a pain in the ass or is it just my bad luck? I'm makin my own jewellery as the price to buy for what I wanted was just ridiculous. Must admit, I'm a bit of 'the more glamorous the better', and 'the bigger the better' kind of girl. Want all my 5 bridesmaids to have necklaces, earrings, bracelets, hair-pins and either fascinators or tiaras. To buy on the net or in shops it was working out at about £150 per bridesmaid! By making it myself I've purchased all the crystals, glass pearls, findings, wire etc, for about £50. They look real nice too! Put urself to use if uv got the time and save the pennies wherever u canXX

Only you can make these decisions, so if you have time, then go for it- it's your wedding. There may be some templates around to make life a bit easier and there's no harm in asking what your bridesmaids think. As long as they don't hate the idea, it is your wedding and they're going to wear what you tell them to. x

I like the personal touch and a friend of mine had their mum make their BM dresses and they looked gorgeous. It certainly helped cut costs as well. I think it's more excitig than shopping as well because you get to see them "grow" as it were! Talk to your BM's though, that is the only way to know if they are ok with the idea but frankly they should be if that's what you want!
