I would like your opinions on hats. my mum hates hats but my sister says that mother of the brides need to wear hats. Ive told my mum she can wear what she wants but is it expected. We aren't getting married in a church but in a hotel where everything is under the one roof.

If she doesn't feel comfortable in a hat then why wear one?
If you didn't want to wear a veil would you wear one because it's expected? I think mother of the bride usually does wear a hat, but if she doesn't like them it seems silly to make her :)
CommentAuthorBethanyS
^^^ I agree. There is no point in your mum wearing one if she doesn't want to. She will just end up taking it off anyway. x

I've actively discouraged anyone from wearing a hat!!! The main thing is that your mum feels comfortable xx

Thanks That's my thinking if she doesn't want to why make her. My sister is getting married 8 months after me and has told our mum she needs to wear a hat at out wedding my mum has got a bit stressed, Ive told her she can wear what she wants on her head, she is thinking of a fascinator but again its her choice as long as her outfit doesn't class then its ok by me. x

I think you have the right attitude, you want your mum relaxed and feeling good so she can enjoy the day :)

MIL is wearing a hat, my mum isn't. It's really whatever they're comfortable with. It's not expected, so why make her wear something she isn't comfortable with?

She doesn't have to; it's tradition but so is having fruit cake for wedding cake and quite a few brides don't have it any more; me included. My mum isn't wearing a hat either as she hates them so is going with a fascinator instead :)

My mum won't be wearing a hat! She's not into hats or dresses or skirts lol - I've told her it's up to her what she wears. My MIL to be is the complete opposite! She'll be there in her big hat and stylish dress. >.<

my mum wore a hat bc she loves them and looks fab ... more important for your mum to feel comfortable
I have told my mum i would like her to wear a hatas i know my FMIL will be wearing one. My mum wore a very small facinator at my brothers wedding which was really informal. I am having a more formal wedding and went looking around the shops at outfits and she tried on larger style facinators and the style of hat that is on a headband. My mum has always sworn she wouldnever wear a hat but after trying some on and looking in the mirror she realised they aren't all that bad and is coming round to the idea. Maybe take her shopping and get her to try different styles and let her make a final decision xx
