Sorry if this has been asked a million times before but I'm completely confused by the whole giving notice thing! We live in London but we are getting married in Swindon and I've had an email from them explaining that we have to give notice which is written in complete jargon to me and unfortunately their phones are always busy.

Will we have to make an appointment with Swindon council since we're getting married there or with our local council, or even both??

I think with the place you are getting married in. We live in Dorset but are getting married in Hampshire and were told to inform the Hampshire council. If their phones are always busy maybe drop them an email, you might be able to get hold of someone then :) ! x

You book provisionally with the district you are getting married in, and you then book with your own local council to give notice. Our local council charged £35 each, and we had to take passports, birth certificates (and my fiance's decree absolute). Then a couple of weeks later, your local council will send you a blue form (authorisation to marry), which you will have to send off to the district council that is marrying you. Your booking will only be provisional until the council marrying you receive it.

    Hope this helps x
