I don't have a passport or a drivers liscence, which I know its pretty unusual nowadays! I'd already informed the registry office about this on the telephone when we booked our giving notice appointment. They said that was fine, just bring birth certificates and utility bills etc...
But when we got in there this morning, the woman that was doing it with us said that I couldn't give notice as apparently I need my mothers birth certificate to prove that I'm British. I was really surprised as this had not been mentioned before. Also gutted cause i'd been so excited about today. Obviously, I don;t have my mothers birth cert, so the woman said I'd have to get that before they can do my giving notice thing and wedding certificate :(
She was really moody, which made it worse! I ended up crying once we left cause it just ruined it all for me, I know it sounds so silly now hehe. Anyway, we did however pay for the registry office room we're marrying in, so atleast thats done :)

It may be worth buying a provisonal driving licence, just so you can use it as photo id. Couldnt you buy a passport too?? Sounds like a pain in the ass i know :(

Poor you! I'd report her, she's supposed to help not make things more difficult for you!
I'd have had problems too, I've no passport or driving licence either. It really annoys me when they ask for these things, not everyone wants or can afford to drive or go abroad!

I could buy them, but I'm getting married in 78 days and doubt they'd get here in time for the giving notice part anyways... Probably handy to have but i dont wanna pay out the £50 odd it is for something I dont need right now when that could go on our wedding day, but yeah, it is annoying!
Kaz, unfortunately for her, the senior registrar at that place is the husband of my h2b's workmate, so im sure they'll be hearing about it! I kinda hope its not her doing our actual wedding :/
CommentAuthoriluvcakes
Aww hun, she sounded like a right moody bag!! I'd have had problems too as I don't have a passport or driving licence either. I've never heard of having to provide your Mother's birth certificate before - I hope they don't ask of me the same thing as my Mum has retired to Greece! Have you called them back since you went this morning and asked why no-one told you this before / when you booked yor appointment?

I thought this sounds a bit silly, as you would think your birth certificate would tell them that you are British, but I just took a look on direct gov website at what you would need and it says next to the birth certificate that if you born after 1 January 1983 that you might need further documents to prove your nationality.
CommentAuthorHa_x3
8 days?? Shit..what are you guna do? A provisional driving licence doesnt take long to arrive. Other than getting hold of your mums birth cert i dont know what to suggest :/ Could you get hold of it?

Surely your mothers birth certificate doesn't prove that you're British? She could have been born in a different country moved here before you were born, still making you British?!

I had to do this when I gave notice also. They took my driving license and my birth certificate AND my mums birth certificate... Not entirely sure why x

Must be a day of Registrar/Birth Certificate trouble!
I just got a call from my Registrars office - would you believe that MIL2b's name is wrong on h2b's birth certificate and no one has ever noticed or highlighted it!
Not sure what we are meant to do as its just a letter difference but don't want it coming back and biting me on the bum.

I would make a complaint about the moody woman! I guess with so many illigal weddings these days they have had to up the degree of proof you need? I do hate it though when you get told one thing on the phone, then you get told something different when you get there! I'd have cried too chick ...... I hope you get it sorted soon and you can tick it off your list x

H2b had no driving licence as it has been stolen and his passport had run out so he was told by the registrar to get a full birth certificate cos he has'nt seen his original since he joined the army. He was born in a british army hospital in Germany. I was expecting problems but we ordered the full birth certificate from the direct gov website (if you need it in a hurry you can pay for an express service) it arrived about 2 weeks later although we did'nt use the express service. We presented it to the registrar and had no problems at all. Dont let this miserable woman get you down, ask to speak to someone else next time.

I just don't understand when they already have my birth certificate, why would they need my mums?? It just seems a bit odd... She said to prove nationality, but surely my own birth certificate would show that? We're going to have to hope my mum has hers, cause the lady said or else I have to personally go to the registry office that my mothers birth was registered at, and get a copy... That would mean I'd have to find someway of travelling to the opposite end of the country! :O
CommentAuthorXbox widow
Why cant you get a copy of your mums from the direct gov website, like you say I dont understand why they should need this to proove your nationality. But if you have to have it why do you have to go in person? I just dont get it!

We are giving notice on Wednesday and have been told to take Passport for ID purposes and Driving Licences for proof of address as my h2b cant find his Birth Certificate and the Registrar said the above would be fine x

thats not particularly fair to be honest, what if you cant go to your mum for it, i cant my mum is dead and i have never even seen her birth certificate. why do they have to be so bleedin awkward? surely as people have said a british birth certificate is proof of being born in this country?????

You can pay a small fee, I think it's no more than £10, contact your mums registry office where her birth was registered, pay the fee over the phone and they will post a copy out to you.
I had to do this as I had lost my birth certificate and I got a copy within 3 days.x

Well we gave notice today and all we took were our passports, driving licence's and wage slips for proof of address. They did not ask for any birth certificates belonging to us or our parents. The only question asked about our parents were our fathers names and occupations. Thankfully all went well and we can now officially get married

If you'd taken the trouble to ring them and advise regarding not having passport/licence they should have told you about needing mothers birth certificate. I'd put a complaint in, firstly for not giving you the correct info and then secondly for how rude she was. If you do need your mums certificate, just order it from internet or ring the register office up. They'll be able to order it over the phone for you so you don't have to travel all that way. Good luck x

Why do they ask your fathers occupation? My dad is in prison so will this cause a problem? Sorry to hijack your thread! but Im in panic mode now!

no natalie wont cause problems my dad is dead and i never really knew him that well they just ask to put on there records you just tell him any job he did before prision i put mine as rail way worker as thats the last job i remember him having but im sure he had a few more after that
CommentAuthorMrs Davro
Think I had better find out my dads real occupation. Don't think 'he makes rusks at elkes's ' counts.
CommentAuthornatalie2614
Phew! I was going to ring up and ask to see if it would be a problem. He was an electrician and owned his own business so Id just put him down for that. Thank you!

well now I've got a new set of problems!
The only date apparently available for me to go in and give notice is THREE WEEKS before the wedding, in April...
They're *now* saying I need to bring all the stuff I did before (my birth certificate, deed poll name change, utility bill) and mums birth certificate which I've now managed to get, PLUS my old citezencard that I used to use to prove my age for alcohol when I was 18 lol. The different person I spoke to on the phone said they *must have* some form of photographic ID from me... And then just as I was hanging up he re-capped what I need to bring, and said 'full birth certificate'...
When I last went, both me and h2b had our small square ones... does this now mean I have to pay to get one of those big ones??
Really upset that everytime I try to sort this out, they add something to the list! I just want to know that I can get married :( Its hard to be excited when they're making this so difficult :(
CommentAuthormrs-anni-oc
the small ones are fine, both me and my H2B used ours when we give notice... also i never had to use photographic ID as i dont have passport or drivers licence. i used bank statement, wage slips for proof of address.
CommentAuthorGlitterpix
yeah thats what I gave first time round, im getting told different things each time and sent back to retrieve other things... And it's not like I'm not over 16, I'm british... I dont know why I'm having to proove so much to them lol
CommentAuthorHa_x3

im going to pay out and get a copy of the long one, just incase! better to pay however much it costs (prob not that much) than to get turned away again! all I can think is maybe theyve had an increase in false marriages?!
CommentAuthorGlitterpix
however, our wedding is 9th may, and we're doing the marraige notice on 18th april, is that cutting it too close?! its the only date the guy would give us... but im sure they must have something a little sooner?!
CommentAuthorkrissy905
i have just bough one today it cost me £12.50 altogether and you can do it online should be here by the end of the week I'm going to ring and double check what i need as don't have a passport or drivers licence either and i have lost my deed poll papers from when i had my name changed at 11. i think i need my full birth certificate, bank statement first marriage certificate (this shows my deed poll name and says it was changed so that should be ok) and my 1st husbands death certificate.
CommentAuthorKatya
haha i have to laugh otherwise i may cry.... my mum had to flee the house which had my birth certificate in, i dont know where i was registered so cant get hold of a new one and my dad is not even named on my birth certificate!!! what the hell am i meant to do....??
Find out who you are & do it on purpose!
CommentAuthorkrissy905
do you know which hospital you was born in katya or even your first address that might help with figuring out where you were registered if not i would suggest contacting your local registry office and see what they can do to help.
CommentAuthorKatya
yeh im sure my grandparents can tell me... but still.... they dont make it easy to get married these people do they!

CommentAuthorkrissy905
in one way i can understand as theres so many fake marriages but if you are both British and born in the UK why be so difficult
CommentAuthormadhen
that is weird!! i can't see why they'd need your mum's too?? my passport is british but my drivers licence is irish and i was born in ireland. the passport is british because i've dual nationality and mum was more organised than dad at applying for one when i was little! so what does that all mean!?
CommentAuthorMrs.K.Ward
Isn't the place were u give notice also the records office? surely they could of helped you out a bit more in some way....stupid moo! I would request not to have her for the ceremony as they way you were treated. I'm guessing it's all sorted now though?
CommentAuthorGlitterpix

CommentAuthorkrissy905
you can order online from the registry office you was registered at so mine was north linconshire in scunthorpe. it should tell you on your small birth certificate which office you was registered at glitterpix it cost £12 and was delivered the very next day which was a surprise. i think you can also download the form and do it through the post to.

Just a quick update; Finally gave our notice today after all the problems we had! We saw a different woman and she was lovely and looked through my ID's and my mums birth certificate and said that was fine and no need for any other extra bits on top, she didnt even need the long length birth certificate of mine in the end which I bought lol.
I guess the other people we dealt with were just being picky :/
But yay all sorted, and I can now *finally* breathe a sigh of relief, with only 20 DAYS to go! :D three weeks today I will be married :D

glad your all sorted I'm going to ask exactly what i need when i make my appointment as i have lost my deed poll papers and don't have a passport so could have some problems but it does depend on who you get i think i should be ok with out the deed poll papers as it doesn't say on my first marriage certificate in brackets changed be deed poll so there is evidance and i cant get new ones as i still used my married name at the moment xx
CommentAuthorLittle Kettle
krissy905 - I lost my deed a few years back in a house move, but I went online and just ordered a new one. It was so easy and made me worry about how easy it was LOL! When i gave notice of marriage, I didn't even need the deed (even though I took it), but I DID have my passport (in name that I changed it to by deed poll) so I guess that's why. I think I paid about £50 for a replacement deed - could you do the same, maybe?
Vegas baby!
