My PIL2B have decided to put more money into the wedding although they have decided they want it used to pay for drinks after the ceremony/ during the meal. We are already providing our guests which a drink after the ceremony so this is just extras. What is the best way to do this and stop people taking the mick by ordering doubles etc.
I have heard of people giving tokens for free drinks - is anyone doing this/ experienced it at a wedding? If so how did it go?
Also when should we hand the token out? I think they want to give each person 3 drinks each (not including the one we are arranging) so i was thinking we could give them 1 token on their seats at the ceremony so they get 2 drinks after the ceremony and put the other tokens on their place settings so they get 2 free drinks during the meal. Do this sound reasonable?? We are also providing a drink for the speeches, so in total this would equal 5 free drinks per person.
Sorry if this doesnt make much sense haha xxx

I think it really depends on the venue. Have you talked to them about it. Some places prefer that X amount is just put behind the bar to cover drinks, others make you buy a package, and some require tokens. I've only been to weddings with either a pre paid package of drinks or an open bar.

I saw wedding set up where they have each of their guests 2 drinks tokens and put them with their place cards. I thought it was a really good idea, we just can't afford it! x x

I like this idea what about putting them in an organza bag and using them as your wedding favours.

Or would your venue allow you to buy miniture bottles of alcholo as your favours then you wouldn't have to worry about the tokens
How about you specify what each token is worth? Say 1 token will buy a single and mixer, small wine, half pint lager/cider etc then if they want to use two tokens to get a double you can use two tokens or pay the extra.
I would probably give children different ones to stop parents stealing them.

how about getting sort of a loyalty card type thing printed with 3 circles on it. then when they get a drink, they get one scribbed out by the bar staff? then when all 3 are scribbed they cant use it again?

We are putting £300 behind the bar and giving each of our guests a raffle ticket when they arrive. they then take it to the bar where they get their 1st drink on us. We're having a range of drinks from beer and wine for the adults and squash and coke for the children. I've not been to a wedding where it's happened before but here's hoping it works x

We're doing this because my dad paid the deposit and said to just out it behind the bar for drinks. We're going to devide it by the number of guests and then give them a voucher for that amount to be redeemed. If they want to spend more on a drink then they can pay the extra :)

Well i think i mentioned on another thread that i went to a wedding recently that had an open bar. You could only order single measures, wine or beer as they had learned from their sisters wedding that people did take the mick! They had a tab behind the bar and once it got to that amount, the tab was closed off. I thought this was a great idea. Sadly, not all of us have that kind of money haha! xx

Thanks for all the replies girlies! Think we might go down the route of giving out the tokens at the start of the meal by placing them along side favours.
Myself and my OH cannot afford to put on any more than we originally were ( arrival drink and drink with speeches) but if my PIL2B want to put more money in then im not going to argue haha! xx

WHen i was my sisters MOH the bridal party were given a coloured card, and we got free drinks, but there was no limit. I mean none of us took the p~~s, but thats because we were the bridal party! I am doing the same for my bridal party, you just order at the bar, show your card and the bar man buts it on the tab. You can tell them to warn you when you have say £50 left, and when you have run out. Works really well!
