Hi! I'm new here. Been engaged for a couple of months to my best friend and father of my 3 year old :) I have to admit, I hate looking at wedding stuff. It fills me with this horrible stomach ache because I'm so nervous and anxious about it all which isn't like me at all. Anyway, I've hit my first brick wall. The Dress! I'm only 5ft 1 and don't get on in dresses too well. They always drag if they are long and I can never find one that brushes the knees. I'm on a pretty tight budget so custom made with a million dress fittings isn't going to be good for me. So what style is best for short ladies? I'm slim so something figure hugging will be welcomed, I always look frumpty in loose fittings but it'll be on all day so can't have anything tight! I'm starting to sound bridezilla aren't I? Ideas welcomes eagerly!

Congratulations to all the future brides here too :)

I'm only 5 "3 so not that much taller than you. I've gone for a fitted dresses - it's in my album - but i'm having it made into more of a fishtail fit at the bottom. I was really suprised at how easy to walk in it was even when it was miles to long! You just need to fine the right dress that isn't to heavy. I thought I needed a short dress but when I tried on several I kept feeling like i looked like someone elses bridesmaid or that I looked to young and like I was playing at getting married.

I'm not a dress person myself, hardly ever where them unless it's to a wedding! Honestly, the best thing to do is go a try a load on but go with an open mind. Put totally out of your mind that because you are short you have are going to struggle with the length and have to have a short one. Trust me! I thought the exact same thing before I tried dresses on! I was really suprised by the one i've chosen:

Having the bottom made more mermaid style

You'd be suprised at how many dress styles will suit you, best thing you can do hun is get to a shop and try lots of different styles on, let the girls in the shop know you're conscious about your height and take a pair of shoes that are roughly the same height as you plan to wear on the day to give you an idea on how it will all look. Dont worry though we all have a stress about the dress at some point along the way xxx

My advice would be to go into a good shop whether you intend on buying from there or not and asking the ladies in there for advice. You might be quite surprised by what suits you and won't know until you try and they will know best by your body shop and style.

I'm 5'2 and found tea-length made me feel shorter. I didnt feel good in fish tail/mermaid dresses, but that might not have been to do with height.
Most dresses will be able to be taken up to suit you. It did feature alot when I was dress shopping. I really liked one dress but with how much needed chopping off it felt like I was wasting money.

Basically never rule out a dress until you have tried it on. Sometimes the ones you dismiss are the ones that look fab!

I'm 5ft 2 1/2, and didn't have a problem. I ended up going for the one which the lady in the shop suggested, mcuh better than the ones I'd chosen to try on!

If I were you I'd make an appointment and try lots on to get a feel of what you're happy with. You can either take someone with you or not, depending on which makes you feel less uncomfy!

Love the 50s dress idea, but then i love everything vintage really! I'm 5ft 2 and i've also gone fitted tried almost every dress in 4 shops before i found the one for me which is a line but with a really low waist but its not at all heavy.

I agree with the others try as many things on as you can in different shops so you can get an idea about who is in it for the sale and who wants you to look and feel amazing. The other birdes say on here you might be surprised when you see the dresses on :)

Im with you on that one GC2B. Im 5'2 as well and found the shorter lengths really unflattering! I've actually gone for a pretty big dress - pics in my album with me in so you can see.. it nips in tiny at the waist and then flows down and out.. I think it make me look great - tight dresses were a complete no go with me! xx

Hello there fellow short lady! I'm also 5ft 1, so know the exact dilemma you are faced with babe! It's actually not as difficult as you may think. I think the main thing you need to remember is that you should probably try to avoid anything too meringue like - it could make you look short and stumpy, no matter how petite your frame may be.
Wedding dresses are also made extra long - it's easier to chop bits off than to add it on, so they tend to cater for 6ft ladies! To be honest, I think any dress you get you will have to get altered. I had to have a whopping 7.75 inches taken off mine LOL!
This is me in my dress:

    P1010638.JPG

I think the best advice I can give is try everything you can on - every shape dress - as you may be surprised. Also, listen to what the ladies in the dress shops say. They work with dresses and ladies of all shapes and sizes every day and a lot have a wealth of experience. Something that looks awful on the hanger may look gorgeous on you! Good luck and enjoy! x

I'm also 5ft 1 and I had an A-line floor length dress with no train. I went to several bridal shops and noone said that being short was a problem - I just had to stand on a little step when I tried on the sample dresses so I could see how the dress fell xx

Any dress you pick hunni will be made to measure for you so no matter what height you are it will be PERFECT!
Go try some on and remember the dresses you try on are just samples they won't be the one you take home, unless you decide to buy the sample and even then they will alter it to fit you!

Thank you all! Been so busy with work forgot to check this. I like A-Line and vintage style for october. I think the colour scheme of burnt oranges and browns will go with the vintage feel too :) Thank you! :D Still feel pretty sick looking at stuff but I'm sure it'll sink in soon!
