A bit of advice please girls!
Do you think we need capanes either during the reception or later in the evening? Really don't think we can afford more (£2 plus VAT per canape at our venue) but don't want people to be starving! There will be a 3-course meal and then cake and sweet table in the evening. xx

    2pm – Ceremony
    3pm – Photographs
    4.15pm – Drinks Reception
    5.15pm – Dinner Call
    5.30pm – Dinner
    7.30pm – Speeches
    8.30pm – Music

were only having them as we get married at 2pm the food isn't until 6.30pm so think you will be ok, just tell them to have a big lunch they will be fine, were also having a chocolate fountain could work out cheaper than having canapés?

I think that's fine personally but some people can't go without food for 3.5 hours (diabetics, kids, greedy people like me lol :P). But seriously they won't even notice because they will be busy admiring and mingling :) they will appreciate their dinner more without the canapes and it's quite a big expense to add if you have lots of guests xxx

Only thing is people will be travelling during Lunch time! It's in London and people will be in cars/tube/buses etc. Just hope they won't be too hungry when they arrive - the ceremony is an hour long too (vicar wouldn't let it be any shorter!)

Not sure about choc fountain for a reception - everyone would love it I'm sure but sugar is an appetite suppressant lol, don't want people not eating the proper 3-course meal!

Our service is at 2pm as well. I think we're eating at 5 and having speeches first. They shouldn't take long though so will be eating at 5.30. I don't think we're having canapes x

We are having canapes with our drinks reception, ceremony at church is at 1:30pm and I think the sit down meal will be approx 5pm- 5:30pm start. They are included in the reception venue package though so luckily not costing us extra.

Maybe people will eat a good brunch?

Could you do cheaper snacks during the drinks reception such as cheesey bread sticks, olives and crisps/nuts? If you're worried about guests getting hungry that is.

we are having canapes getting married a 12 then dinner will only be at 4-430ish.
With u only getting married at 2 people will defo have time to have lunch.
If your worried why not have your reception hour going on whilst you are having photos. e.g- 3-4:30 photos and drinks reception with your dinner call at 4:45 half an hour chopped off. xx

A good venue should be flexible, that way it's nothing pricey but enough to just plug a hole for an hour or so. Hopefully most people will be smart enough to have a hearty brekkie. I always expect to eat late at a wedding and ensure I have a good brunch/lunch before I go so that I don't get hungry.

Good luck checking with the venue, hope they can do something light for you.

We are going before we get ready so yea probably, my baby sister lives with our dad and they don't have much money so she has only had one takeaway and mcdonalds is a huge treat.

My little sister's dad got married on christmas eve and had their reception at mcdonalds with just their two witnesses then told his parents over christmas lunch.

Giggles aside, I fail to see how McDs is ever a treat. I'm a vegetarian and involved with lots of animal charities. I know how the animals are treated that are supplied to McDs and I'd personally rather starve than eat there.

InDreamland - glad you like Greenwich! It's lovely there isn't it. Soo much busier now though with the cutty sark and olympics - full of tourists! Yes I've seen De Veres- they have a lovely garden at the front.

My friend got married in the trafalgar tavern there, it was so pretty, could see the river as they said their vows. H2B and I have the de veres venue in Watford as our reception venue :D

I'm sure your guests will love your venue.

So many places now full of tourists. I'm not looking forward to the Olympics, I live a 20 mins walk from the lea valley canoe slalom white water place, it's going to be carnage for a week, we will have to get residents permits to park outside our own homes and the place will be heavily stewarded to stop visitors to the area parking everywhere.

I know what you mean about eating cereal bars, I think I'll be the same apart from it'll be our canapes, I'm actually going to request that we have someone who always brings the fresh tray of canapes to us first before going to the guests just so H2B and I get something to eat otherwise we will both be really grouchy ;)

You need to remember that you are realistically talking at least 4.5 hours, and possibly longer, between meals, not 3.5 hours.

If your ceremony is at 2pm, most guests will be aiming to arrive by 1.30-1.45pm (as a guest, I'd be aiming to arrive 30 minutes before so I wasn't rushing/missing the brides entrance). This means that most people will likely be leaving home at around 1pm, unless your venue is very local. They are unlikely to sit down to a big lunch in their best clothes, so they will likely eat before getting ready.

This means that most guests will probably have last eaten at 12pm; meaning, by the time you sit down to eat, they will have gone for 5.5 hours without food. I personally do not have a medical condition, but would be getting extremely hungry and feeling probably quite sick by that point.

So yes, I think you do need to provide canapes, or at least some nibbles, like crisps and nuts, to keep people going.

InDreamland- that's where our reception is! That's really cool that you have been there! Was it recently? We're getting married in a church and just having the reception there. I started to get cold feet about the lack of outdoor space and also they haven't done it up for ages so it's looking a bit shabby inside :-s I hope the view will keep everyone distracted!
I live in east London and Olympics is going to be a nightmare! I'm looking at walking to work (1.5hr each way). Do you have tickets at least? Sounds like it will be crazy for you too!

Lol I don't blame you for asking for the first canapes! You will need it! I've never actually been a fan of canapes as they're always meat and as soon as the veggie one comes everyone dives for them and I'm just left with nothing :-(

Ooh, it was lovely there hun! It was a December wedding, 2 weeks before Christmas in 2009 so not too long ago. The food was really nice (and I had a special dairy free meal). My mate organised goodies in the ladies like ladies products, perfume, deodrant, painkillers, plasters etc..

Where abouts in East London are you? I get into work on the Central line every day from Loughton so I have not choice but to ggo through Stratford every day .............not good! I'm so not looking forward to my commute. H2B is Newham police so he's going to have major issues with his commute :( He and BIL have already started their olympics shifts so me and my sis are already being affected as they are working most weekends now until end of September! :(

I have tickets for the mens bronze medal badminton game. What about you? Going to any events?

Oh glad you liked it! I think in 2009 it was in its prime lol (they haven't cleaned the chandeliers since- I'm tempted to go in there and do it myself!!) Oh yes I'm planning on a basket for the ladies loos! Gents are unfortunately the pub ones downstairs.

I'm in Canary Wharf- something like 90min wait for a train at peak time- just mental. Commuting through Stratford every day really does sound awful- I feel for you! How long would it take to walk?!

Badminton tix sounds good- I like that game. I haven't got any tickets. I just wish I could leave London for the whole summer lol!

I just looked up Watford De Veres- it's so beautiful!!! You will have an amazing day! :-)

Lol - it's a 1 hour and 20 minute commute to work on a good day as it is, drive 15 mins to station and park up, then from Loughton to Victoria (changing at Oxford Circus) .................there is no way I am walking lol! My only possible options to totally avoid the tubes is if I can drive to our offices in Enfield or Snaresbrook as we are pan-London and they're my closest local offices (i use them when the tube strikes are on or if I just wanna hide from HQ).

Canary Wharf will be busy you poor luv, feel for you too. Get on a boris bike?

Could you just ask the venue to clean the chandeliers? I think it's a perfectly reasonable request if you're having your reception there and paying good money for it!

Thanks hun, H2B and I just feel in love with it when we first saw it and it had such a good package there was no contest with the other venues we could afford.

Oh goodness- I hadn't quite appreciated where Loughton was. Now I just checked and that would be one hell of a walk lol. Definitely speak to work about the other locations, to avoid getting in at midday!!

H2B won't let me bike in. Not sure I'd want to either but he thinks it's too dangerous biking such a distance in London. I guy from our uni got killed on a bike in London, so that really scared everyone!

I might ask about the chandeliers but think it would be a huge job as they're massive and would need to be dismantled. But still, the hire fee alone is a fortune so they should make sure it's sparkling in my opinion!

Thanks hun, we do love that venue, so pleased we're having it there. Yes, we're having a Church ceremony beforehand. :D

It's been agreed by the boss that the team should make all reasonable efforts to get in but that flexitime accrual is suspended for the period so that if we struggle to work our hours due to travel disruption we're able to work a little less hours wise. I might take a few days off tbh if it all gets too unbearable.

I agree cycling in London is hair raising but I reckon so many people will take to the bikes it'll be safer as drivers will be more aware of them not to mention the fact that traffic will be at a standstill anyway.

I think the trafalgar is a lovely venue (maybe I'm biased coz my mate had her wedding there but it was a lovely day) but I think for the price you are paying to hire the place they should at least make it clean and sparkly for you. It is your weddingf afterall so you want it to be perfect. My mate had a Abba tribute band, so much fun!

Reading above posts, when people go to work, or normal day to do life, do they not have lunch around the midday mark and then dinner when they get in from work, a good 5-6 hrs plus after lunch?
I think people expect too much at weddings, If you don't want them hun, dont have them. Plus its the extra £'s just for a nibble between all of 4hrs

In my opinion if you are having a sit down meal and an evening buffet, canapes are unnecessary, particularly if you are getting married later on in the day when guests have already had ample time to eat.

That said, we are having them as our wedding is at eleven and it will be a long day, most of guests are partial to a drink so my plan is to stuff them as full of food as possible!!!

If you are getting married at a hotel does it have a bar menu that any starving guests could always order something light from if necessary?

Yes it's in a ball room above a pub so there will be a bar where starved guests can order from! I might try ask the venue about providing a few nibbles. But with a 2pm wedding everyone should have enough time to eat.

Oh yes I can see why you'd want them if you're marrying at 11am. What time is your meal? And how early will you have to get up for hair and make up?!

The meal is at half two, but we will be having the speeches first so will be close to three by the time the guests eat. Ceremony is at eleven but guests will be arriving from ten onwards, so it is quite a long time and if they've not had breakfast and obviously they won't have a chance for lunch!

Lol yep, it's a good job I'm an early riser...we both thought an early ceremony would be better as I am such a stress head I will be totally unbearable if I have to wait to get ready etc...hopefully will help with the nerves!
