I've just received through the catering options from our reception venue for the evening and it's all just basic party food. Absolutely nothing wrong with that as I'm partial to a sausage and a scotch egg but I just feel like I want to do something a bit different. Has anyone come across any good ideas for evening food? My venue say they will do their best to cater to our needs so hopefully they wont mind me coming up with a few requests..
Thanks x

What sort of stuff are you thinking? Our venue give hot options eg stovies, chilli (At 10 at night???), bacon rolls or the standard buffet stuff... I'm not fussed - wont have much room for food in my dress lol x

I'm not all that fussed about food either but people expect it don't they? We're having a small registry office wedding at 3pm and then evening starts at 6.30pm.. Food probably won't be bought out until 7.30ish so I don't know.. Budget is about £400 for 60 guests.. Maybe an outside caterer would be better?

We are having breakfast rolls- sausage, bacon etc; wedges and I was thinking maybe some good old alcohol soaking up pancakes!
MrsLuker you're so right - people do expect to be fed. Infact, my mil2b has said she'll pay for canapes because she 'doesnt want folk talking about us' lol x

I know what you mean - my H2B (who normally isn't bothered) is panicking we're not having canapes - getting married at 1pm and meal is at 4.30pm.
We're having a 4 course wedding breakfast so just having bacon barms, sausage barms and mini fish & chips for an evening munch around 10pm. Feel that's when peeps start getting the munchies again.

suppose it needs to be something fairly broad spectrum to cover everyone's tastes if you're having guests of all different ages? like it'd be great to have a sushi buffet or something completely different but i know what my grandmothers would say to that...!!

my mil2b is horrified that we want to have bacon baps for buffet lol

Bacon and sausage barms would be amazing. We have a similar dilema in that we get married at 4pm, dont really want to do a sit down meal as we wont sit down till 5:30pm at the earliest. So we thought of having a mini meal (we want fish n chips but mother is frowning!) for people to grab something to eat, take a seat ready for speeches, and then a bigger buffet about half 8?

I bought our buffet food from iceland. We have indian, chinese, marinated chicken, chicken wings, sausage rolls, cheese and onion rolls, sausages, mini cornish pasties, mini prawn cocktails, prawn rings and mini pizzas and a cream cake platter.
From m&s we are having mixed sanwiches, rolls and wraps.
From cosco we have sweetie buffet, cheese platter, crackers and pate.
We have paid for chocolate fountian, hog roast and 5 tier cheesecake wedding cake.

wow blondmumma - you def shop around, sounds like a good plan!! never thought of iceland but that'd be just perfect, they have all those party platters and they're really good value...

natalie i think a mini meal is a good idea as people are usually peckish and it'll tide them over :)
CommentAuthornatalie2614
Thanks madhen, just need to convince the mother as she thinks its tacky! And to be honest I need to find a catering company that are willing to do this as well as a big buffet in the evening.

does she think it's tacky just cuz it's fish and chips? or the whole idea? you could have something else along with the fish and chips to keep her happy...!! ;)

Hi we're planning to have a hot buffett instead of sit down meal as it £1200 cheaper!! then maybe a basic hogroast for the evening but we wont really be having many additional evening guests so not sure what we should do!? Our hot buffett has chilli, rice, salads, currys, lasagne etc there's a great choice and an option for all, hate to think of paying loads of money on food that wont be eaten so think its a good option x

We are getting married at 3pm and then having a roast dinner and dessert. Then in the evening we are having canape's, sweet buffet and a cake buffet.
CommentAuthorSijen
Our venue is really modern and mini fish & chips and the bacon and sausage barms were on the menu so I wouldn't say they're tacky and not just because we're having them. It's a friggin buffet and people should just be glad they're getting fed lol.

I went home and told H2B that Id found a place in Liverpool that does mini fish and chips and he was chuffed! We joked that the guests would get fish and chips in newspaper at the reception and be happy, now it looks like they may get a classier version! Mother can like it or lump it!

Natalie our caterer is based in Wallasey and they do allsorts, one of our canapes is mini fish and chips served in paper cones - but they're the Financial Times so that makes them classy! If you want details let me know and I'll post on your wall - we wanted a bit of a Chinese/English mix as I'm Chinese and H2B is not, and came up with the following for our menu:
Canapes Steamed Siu Mai with Malaysian Chilli Dip Crispy Goosnargh Duck pancakes served with Hoisin Deep fried bean curd served with crispy leeks Tempura prawn served with a Chilli aioli Mini fish and chips - served in the Financial Times Tempura vegetables Cornish Pasties with Brown Sauce Thai Chicken Lemon Grass Sticks Mini cheeseburgers
Mini-Mains Seared fillet of welsh beef served with au poivre sauce and chunky chips Salt n pepper king prawn served with vermicelli noodles Stir fried vegetable rice noodles Lamb Hotpot with pickled red cabbage Mushroom and spring onion dumplings served with a lemon and soy syrup
Desserts served on afternoon tea tiers Fresh Fruit Kebabs with Minted Crème Fraiche Baked Vanilla Cheesecake Mini Pavlova Chocolate and Raspberry Trifles Assorted Choux Pastries Tea/Coffee Wedding Cake

Our venue won't let us use the kitchen, so it must be cold food. I really wanted a buffet that needed knifes and forks, sounds weird but it means everyone needs to be sat down and therefore I can do a tableplan, lol xx
We've come up with 3 types of mini pasties, mini pizzas and 3 different lots of pasta served with salad veg, potato salad, crisps (mainly for kids) and french sticks, sliced!
I think it'll work ok, we've taste tested everything cold and it was lovely. Just got to figure out what to do for the evening, I wanted to have cream teas late afternoon but H2B laughed and we're running out of funds! :( But we'll have to do something for the day guests to eat so probably just a cheap finger food buffet, with sausage rolls etc. at least the kids will like it! xx
WARNING:
I say the first thing I think of!

No probs I've put their details on your wall - we had the tasting a few months ago and knew almost instantly they were right for us - plus we'd negotiated the heck out of them and got nearly 40% off the inital asking price for their usual wedding menu! Soooo excited about the food - I've already said we need to make sure as bride and groom we get a separate plate of canapes put aside in case we're busy with photos that we don't get any on the day!!
CommentAuthorkimmy
We are having bacon ciabatta and pasties ..lol to soak up some beer.x
CommentAuthorA.Bird2b
our buffet is mostly cheese and meat boards with a selection of fresh breads and then lots of little things to nibble like tempura prawns, chicken yakitori sticks, mini spring rolls and such. I did have to request some vegetables and salads be added though as the venues menu completely left them off!
CommentAuthorKellyB81
Went to a wedding a couple of years ago that did the same - didn't have a sit down meal but had a buffet with their favorite curries - went down a treat with 80% of the party but there was the usual cold sandwich selection to cater for anyone who didn't appreciate the curries!
