I'm really excited as we have paid the deposit on our wedding venue so we now officially have set the date! We have booked Hyde Bank Farm in Romiley - Stockport/Manchester area. Has anyone on here had their wedding there? If so, any advice to give or things to share?
I'm excited by the building as it's an old barn - can't wait to decorate it, but we are on a budget. If anyone has had their reception at a barn, please feel free to share your ideas on decorating it - we're getting married in December 2013. Christmas is my favourite time of year, so we'd like it to look cosy with white twinkly fairy lights. In terms of flowers, we were thinking of ivy, berries, roses etc.
Any budget friendly tips or ideas are welcomed!

Beautiful venue!!
What about a couple of Christmas Tree's? The straw stars would look pretty too.
If only life could be one long tea break

:) Mmm good idea about the Christmas tree - could be nice in the downstairs area, as I'd like to dress that area up a bit. Have you had your wedding there?

No, I've never been - only seen it on pictures. A tree with lots of lights could look really pretty and if you buy the lights in January then they won't be too expensive. Does the venue not have any decorations that they use for functions?

They have given details of a recommended company that has dressed the venue before, but the company has no website/facebook page, so I can't look online for prices/pics. Will ring them, but I'd also like some advice relating to decorating a barn so that I have some ideas to discuss with them. :)
Ive just had a nosey at the venue website! wow! its gorgeous! and the grounds etc it all looks beautiful!! I particularly like the delicate swags they have decorated the barn in and think if you could somehow get some fairy lights (not to many) in those swags! OMG! that would look amazing, also how about winding some mini fairy lights into your table centrepieces ( i am doing this) it really looks pretty. I think your idea of the ivory, berries and a deep red rose would really set the venue off!!! possibly an alternate ivory and deep red sash on the back of the chairs too :) how exciting - i too am getting married in an old barn, but cannot have any swags etc as the roof is very high up (pics in profile) xx

we saw the website for this venue, it looks lovely.
our venue is also a barn. we are going to drape organza from the eaves and string lights across at intervals. we are going to have vintage style bunting on the walls as well as heart shaped decorated willow wreathes.
we are going to wind garlands around the door frames and supporting beams.
hth.

Hi guys, Thanks very much for your replies! Kev's Angel, your venue looks gorge! Like the idea of mini fairy lights in the centre-pieces - want to have glass hurricane lanterns with a large church candle and ivy, berries and roses would round. However, I thought if I had this for all the tables, they might look a little 'flat' so I thought if I alternated them with some taller centre-pieces, it should add a bit of height and rhythm to the overall look. Was thinking of cream birdcages with flowers inside, so little white battery operated fairy lights would look nice inside of these along with the flowers.
KitKat, like the idea of heart shaped willow wreaths - was thinking of having a big heart shaped willow wreath on the front door of the barn to add a bit of festive cheer to the outside.
I'm wondering what to do about the downstairs room, as it needs more dressing than upstairs, to make it feel a little less dated. I wanted to find a way of incorporating these paper snowflake and bell/globe decorations from Re

I know I want to include them in the overall decor but I'm not sure how yet. I'm also not sure whether to go with all white or a mix of white and red bells. Any feedback or ideas appreciated!

oo the paper snowflakes are really nice!
could they not be strung like a garland?
or popped on to chair sides if they are only small?
id go with white snowflakes and just a few red bells as accents, but thats only my opinion :)

Hi KitKat, I like the idea of white snowflakes and a few red bell accents, I like the garland idea too - gave me the idea of stringing them vertically though at different heights.

Hi, just found this through a search for the venue, not yet seen it but they have an open evening tomorrow I'm going to. Is the venue reasonably priced, I'm excited by the pics but worried about getting ahead of myself incase it's out of my budget x

Hi Rachel :)
I LOVE the venue - can't wait for the big day! Venue suits a smaller wedding as it's a little on the small side, but it's so quaint and cosy. Will warn you, when you drive up to it, you have to drive past the dairy board which is v industrial. However, as soon as you pass this, the road becomes a lovely farm track lined with trees and then it opens out to a view of fields. To the side of the building is the entrance to the woodland and canal with a lovely bridge that could could be scenic for photos, as well as the actual grounds of the venue. Parking is easy and the neighbouring cottages are owned by the family that runs HBF so no worries regarding parking restrictions there.
If you are going to book HBF, I would defo make sure you negotiate on fixing the prices for the year you want to get married - got my fella to book the date and he neglected to do this which means that although we booked far in advance, it hasn't done us any favours price wise and prices have gone up. I also wasn't aware that table linen and napkins are not included in price of venue hire/meals which I'm a little bit miffed at as this is not mentioned and it's a hidden cost.
These little gripes aside though, the venue is reasonably priced, and I love the building - didn't really want to go down the conferency hotel room route.
I've booked a local florist from the Woodley area to do the flowers and wind ivy round the beams - her arrangements are lovely and reasonably priced. She's called Libby at Flowers by Strawberry Fields if you're interested.

Ahh lovely that your mum's making your cake! :) I'm in the baby steps stages of setting up my own cake business, so I wanted to take on the challenge of making my own cake. I've been collecting jam jars, Dowe Egbert's coffee jars and other nicely shaped clear glass jars to use as either little flower vases or lanterns for tea lights. Been decorating them with lace, white paper doilies (look a bit like snowflakes) and ribbon. They look good! I've also made our save the dates out of luggage tags, cath kidston note paper and ribbon. Cox and Cox do a good save the date stamp that you can personalise with your details.
I'd like our invitations to be laser cut but this is proving to be a bit of a sticking point money-wise - thought if we outsourced the lasercutting ourselves it would be cheaper, but not really proving to be the case. Had the invitations designed and I love them, just need to find a cheap way of getting them laser-cut.
Really enjoying the whole process of being creative!
What about you? x

Hi, I live in romiley and live very near the barn. It's lovely, we would have choosen it but it wasnt big enough for us. Went to a wedding there a few years ago. There was lots of fairy lights and it was magical. Will look if I can find any pictures x x

Your's looks lovely, so lucky.

You could have candy canes or baubles as place cards...
You could make stick Christmas trees for center pieces. (You get some sticks, dry them out, paint them what ever colour or leave them how they are, and glue them on top of each other to make likes criss-cross look, but have the sticks getting small and small) - they are cheap and easy too make, I made loads last year and them dotted around the place.
Wrap your favor boxes with string or ribbon to look like Christmas pressies.
Use plain vases for your flowers and tie candy canes around with nice ribbon or sting.
Have balls of mistletoe dangling in certain places.
Spray paint pine cones to match your colours, or paint the tips in glue and put glitter on.

Love the save the dates and cake idea MrsEminson2B! Save the dates are really professional looking. :) Button and Boo, thanks for the ideas - definitely want candy canes - was thinking of threading them on to a luggage tag label and using them as place card favours. I also like the pine cone and mistletoe ideas!
Amy, would be great if you come across any of the pics from the wedding there - would be lovely to see. :)

Hi, thanks for the tips on price fixing and table linen, I got the brochure through today for prices and must admit I wouldn't have realised. When I enquired they are fully booked between April to October next year for Saturdays so I may be looking at the year after now so I'll definitely ask about prices. I'm hoping to make it to the open evening tonight just waiting on my fella trying to get out of work early. Love your idea of winding ivy round the beams sounds gorgeous. And yes I agree I'm not keen on the hotel idea plus I love the idea of a barn, let's hope I love it and get a date set x
