Hi girls, just a question which to be honest I had never thought of asking as I'm already paying £16.00 per quest to have a drinks package each. Our Bestman said he was charged for every bottle they opened on his day which I think is disgraceful after all the money there being paid for the entire day/night. Please advise me as to whether or not this is the case. Have you been charged and how much?????

Hi, yes this is standard at most places. We are having the house wine which is £14.60 per bottle, we asked about bringing our own and they said the corcage is £14.50 per bottle!!
It is rediculous, we have decided to have drinks in the garden at our ceremony venue so we can provide those and then when we get to the reception venue we will just go straight in to the meal saving money by not doing entrance drinks there x

yOU ONLY GET CHARGED A CORKAGE FEE IF YOU BRING IN YOUR OWN DRINKS, IF YOUR GETTING THEM FROM THE VENUE THEN YOU WON'T BE CHARGED A CORKAGE JUST THE NORMAL PRICE OF THE BOTTLE!
a CORKAGE FEE IS PAYABLE PER BOTLE BECAUSE EVEN THO YOU SURPLY THE DRINK'S THE STAFF STILL HAVE TO OPEN THEM AND SEARVE THEM TO YOUR GUESTS MEANING THEY STILL NEED PAYING AND AS YOUVE TAKEN THIS AWAY FROM YOUR VENUE BY GETTING THEM ELSEWHERE, THEY CHARGE YOU A PERCENTAGE INSTEAD SO THEY CAN STILL PAY THE STAFF AND MAKE UP SOME OF THEIR LOST REVENUE!

Amy that's a really good idea, might have a think of doin that myself. I am paying almost £1000 for the drinks package for the adults and on top childrens drinks so I'll be really annoyed if they do charge me extra on top. I have gone over my terms and conditions and there is nothing that states any corckage fees that's why I thought I'd ask on here.

Every venue is different but corkage is charge to cover costs for serving the wine, washing up the glasses, etc.
Our drinks package is £14 per head and this is a welcome drink, glass of wine with dinner and champagne for the toast. We totaled up providing our own alcohol but it isn't actually much cheaper if you factor in buying the alcohol and paying corkage too (unless you get find corkage cheap or even free).

Try to haggle the corkage.....we did, and if we spend more than £1000 on bar drinks for day and eve, we get corkage at half price!......litte does venue know my family and friends are filthy, dirty, alcoholic pikies!....lol. :)

corkage drives me up the wall too.... Do you have a bar actually in the room at your venue? If not and there's space, you might be able to hire in a bar. Lots of bars will come for free if you have more than 100 guests, and then there's no service charge.

I think corkage is very expensive, ranging from £5 to 10 per bottle, but I CAN see why they charge it, they have to serve it, and the glasses to wash. why would they do that fro nothing? but i think £5 is plenty really, especially if you have it on the table and the guests are serving themselves anyway.
amyW, we were thinking about doing that too, but then afterwards if people are driving to the reception venue.....it might not be such a good idea. I dont know, still thinking about that one.

The venue I have been looking at isnt too bad. It is £20 per bottle for their own house wine or £5 corkage for our own, so if we buy wine at £10 a bottle we are saving £5 per bottle! It all depends on the venue and their pricing though. Some wont allow you to bring your own alcohol at all. But you do only get charged corkage if you are bringing alcohol in, not if it is from the venue in the first place :) xxx

yeah a saving of £5 per bottle, and depending on how many bottles you need it could be a considerable amount. for our wedding it wouldnt make much difference cos theres only 24 of us...not many bottles.
But our venues wines are £15 per bottle, and my favorite wine is asti-martini at £6 per bottle. if they charged £10 we would be paying more than their house wine. but if they were to charge £5 then it might be worth it for us, not to save money because it would only save pennies, but that would mean we could have the wine we like best rather than having some wine we dont even know we like.
Corkage is not charged on bottles bought from the venue.

How about disposable glasses and screw top wine in the middle of the table?
Or as raggedy anne said boxes of wine.

I am seriously thinking of taking some boxes of wine to offer drinks in the registry office garden.....I won the raffle at work at Christmas and i won a big hamper of drink, and in it is 1 box of red and a box of white wine.
I'll see what H2B thinks.....

There was only 19 of us for our wedding - but we ordered about 5 bottles of wine for the whole party. It doesn't sound much, but the wedding co-ordinator explained to us that most people usually buy their own drink anyway - and as the bar was open from arriving at the venue, most of the guests did bring a drink in with them.
For the wine that we did buy, we ordered a selection of white, rose and red as everyone is different. Luckily, it was a good choice as there was enough for a toast - and with other guests drinking their own drink, enough for a couple of glasses for others (oh and a bottle for me and hubby lol).

We want two different drinks package so they are designing one for us. If we did bring our own we could be charge £10 per bottle which is cheap to some places we looked at.
Were having 80 people during the day so it works out cheaper just to have their drink packages and it's easier for us.
