We are Getting at my home church in Somerset but will need our banns reading in our local parish in Birmingham too. I presumed we could have them read n our church in Birmingham we attend so emailed the vicar today to give him notice but apparently can't have them read there as another church nearer and got to read there instead. Our normal church is 1.2 miles away but our local church is 0.9 miles away so nearer and has to be your nearest church, I'm really sad. I know it sounds silly as important that they are read but we are expected to attend and going to a church we don't know now and no one in the congregation will know us either.... All for 0.3 miles but apparently the law.

Sorry just needed a moan :o( xxx

Awr well that is silly if you ask me! I didnt no this! I best find out where my nearest church is. Ive just persumed its one but after reading this I do think theres a smaller one 3 roads away (can you tell I dont do much exploring?!) lol

I think Banns are a waste of time. Especially if you dont know anyone! But I do understand that they are the rules! x

I really don't blame you milz! That does sound really stupid!! It seem really unfair!! I understand when they tell people who never go to church things like that but I thought if you had a regular church you went to it would be fine!! Never expected that!! That's really sad!!
Perhaps you can ask your vicar if he will acknowledge your proposal to marry to our congregation - so that even though it isn't the "legal" reading, it will be special for you to share it with your friends in the congregation?

It's the same as going to a registry office as still need to give notice so people can object....

LizzyLou, that's what our vicar said, he will mention it in prayers which is nice. It's just sad for the sake of 0.3 miles they won't allow us to have them read there..... You think the church would want people to visit. It's sad we will ony attend the other church just for the sake of hearing our banns read. Xxx

Yeah, it doesn't seem very in the "spirit" of having the banns read!! Surely originally they would have been read amongst your community so that any one who knew they need to object could? That would therefore mean it was logical to have it in the church you are a "member" of! Silly churches! You going to another church just for that seems to "Ok" the idea that you can just go once, have your banns read and then get married - even if your not a church goer ( i know that doesn't apply to you - but if you know what I mean)! What a nonsense rule! x

At least that's something, and lovely that your vicar is going to include it out your church. As annoying as it is just try and to it and forget about it, focus on the wedding instead. xx

I think they say nearest as historically you may have been able to go further afield where nobody knows you. Could you have a word with your vicar and ask him to also read the banns so that it can be done in front of the congretion you are a part of x

That's a bit silly when you actually have a church you attend. Its something special having them heard by your friends in the congregation. Maybe a little word with your vicar to see if although officially he can't read the banns he could mention the wedding

Aw Millz, that's unfortunate. Could you ask your local vicar to say a prayer for you and Paul in his sermon with regards to your forthcoming wedding? That way your congregation will know? Hope you manage to sort something x

Yeah our local vicar has offered to do a blessing/prayer for us in a normal service which is nice. I emailed the nearest church today and she is going to get back to me, needs to go away and check our address and details?!
