Now thats a question!! lol I have always known them to be, as you have said above, Matrons of Honour, due to their married status etc :) but I cannot see why not :)

I think generally speaking you tend to have unmarried women as bridesmaids.
I think I personally probably wouldn't ask a married woman to be a bridesmaid unless I knew they really wanted to, as I tend to think married couples should be together for an event like a wedding. I know I'm a bit gutted that OH is being best man at his friend's wedding the year after ours, as it will mean we spend a large proportion of the day apart (in our case it's even worse as he'll be at the top table, and obv bridesmaids aren't), which I have to say I'm not looking forward to, esp as it will be mainly couples. I'd feel the same about being a bridesmaid, as would he, though it wouldn't be as bad due to the seating.
So yeah, not sure what the correct 'etiquette' is but I always thought it was supposed to be unmarried girls/women. However, it's totally down to the couple I think, and provided someone who was married wanted to be a bridesmaid, who cares?!

hey, i think that its an old tradition for unmarried women to be the bridesmaids but I am the first in my group of girls to be married and there is NO WAY they would not make me bridesmaid cos of that and i would be pretty upset if they did, i defo wouldn't mind about being away from my h2b for a few hours of the day! I think you should choose bridesmaids regardless of age, marital status etc - its about having the best people there to support you on the day! xx
yeah i really don't think anyone pays attention to it now its more of an old fashioned thing...xx

Originaly bridemaids were single girls (maid means unmarried) who would be dressed similar to bride to surround her as she walks down the aise to confuse bad spirits !

Agree with the others - it's old fashion tradition for bridesmaids to be unmarried. Mine just so worked out that MOH was married and bridesmaids not - but I was having my sister, nieces and daughters no matter what status they were

I heard if they are not married they are classed as maid of honour..but if married the become matron of honour x

all 3 of my bridesmaids and my moh are unmarried but they still have partners! my moh's boyfriend will be sat on a completely different table to her but he doesn't mind.

Yep, my sister was one of my bridesmaids, she was CBM and is married, 2 weeks before our wedding she was a bridesmaid for one of her friends. In the Chinese culture though if you're married you're not allowed to be a bridesmaid but as we're British we thought we'd ignore that!

My maid of honour is married but we're not using the word matron cos I think it feels really old! And she's only 28! My other three bridesmaids aren't married tho x

I hope so as all three of mine are married!! I personally think as they have been through it they have a better understanding of what needs to be done, I have no clue!! Saying that they will be sitting with husbands etc during the meal as I wouldnt like to split them up!

My sister is going to be my chief bridesmaid, and my future sister-in-law is going to be a bridesmaid but she's married. Her hubby will have their kids to keep him company though. I hope she isn't offended that she's not my matron of honour, but my little sis is my little sis at the end of the day!

I had 1 married bridesmaid and 3 unmarried bridesmaids. My friend (who was my married bridesmaid) had 1 married bridesmaid and 2 unmarried.
I really don't think it matters these days. I just wanted the people special to me, to be my bridesmaids, irrelivent of their marriage status.

I think it's traditional that they are not married , but it's acceptable if they are married. X

i have totally got mine the wrong way round !!!!
i wanted all 6 of mine to be bridesmaids so they were all equal and hopefully wouldnt feel as though i had picked one over the other - 4 are married, including my eldest daughter, step-daughter to be lives with her fiancee and my 22 yr old youngest daughter who lives at home, has a boyfirend . My 28yr old daughter told me she didnt want the responsibility as MOH as she would be looking after her 3 children so in the end my youngest daughter said she would like to be the MOH/Chief BM. Therefore my MOH/ cheif BM is single.
I also asked my son to be the witness so that he feels included which also goes against the tradition of it being the MOH/chief BM.
As for the table arrangements that isnt following tradition either as the the bridesmaids and their other halves plus my son are sitting on 2 tables - daughters, son & step daughter on one table with their respective other halves and on the other table there will be the other 3 BM & their husbands, plus BF & her hubby .. grandchildren then all sitting on a diff table together,.. in addition to that the best man is sitting at a table with his wife and family & my ex-father in law who is giving me away is sitting at a diff table with some of his family. .. at the moment on the top table will be OH, me & our mums.
Go with what you would like for your day as so long as you are happy and being with those who are there for you. :) x
