just curious as to see as to whether you would think its cheeky if you recieved a invite for a wedding reception with "bring your own bottle" or "due to non license, small amount of alcohol will be provided by bride and groom and after that no other alcohol will be provided"
im asing on behalf of hb on here who has found the perfect venue but its not licensed and her other half seems to be reluctant to look at both sides and see that many peoeple would prob happy to bring their own b ottle as it will save money!!!
i would be happy to do this cause i know just how expensive indvidual drinks can be!

thats my thoughts..ive been to weddings before and up in scotland where i am you pay at least £3.50 for a drink!!! if you have 10 of them your looking at £35.00 just for 1 person....whereas you bring a bottle of voddy etc for you and ur partner.....soo much cheaper...
just needing lots of agreements!

my venues very expensive first thing MIL and FIL asked em was how much were drinks!! there big drinkers but cant do anything about it were supplying 2 arrival drinks and unlimited wine throughout the meal so that will have to do!
but deffo cheaper for people my friends are gonna be staying the night so there all bringin sneaky bottles to there rooms n gonna keep goin to top up lol! so in theory thats the same thing!
I would have no problem in bringing a bottle, more than one bottle even! It isn't that expensive, you can get 3 bottles for £10 at a lot of supermarkets, so it is not a big ask. I know it can feel like a lot to ask and hard to word sometimes when doing the invites but I think your real mates and family will be more than happy to bring some and at least that way they get to drink what they like! :) xx

how about people that have travelled down a fair distance to the wedding? Me and H2B have just been discussing this and he doesn't think its fair to expect those people to buy their own when they've come from so far

I personally think its a great idea. If a wedding was in a hotel with a cash bar, guests would be expected to pay for their own drinks then so by asking them to bring their own drinks its just the same concept but cheaper for guests and the bride & groom. win-win lol
Just to add - showed this to H2B and he said - we should do that. Havent even got a definite date or venue yet like but hes planning ahead lol.

I don't really think it matters how far they have travelled boo, a bottle of wine can be as cheap as £3.58 so it is not much more on top of petrol to travel. But men can be funny about paying for things on top of petrol, my h2b is saying we are going nowhere on days out this Summer due to petrol costs, unless it is free of course! :)

same here Gregorysgirl.....theres a Co-op and Tescos round the corner, we're paying for food for them to eat and *some* of the drinks. The day is costing enough for us anyway and if the reception was in a place with a bar they'd be buying their own drinks anyway (the reception is at home)
I think I need to talk him round on this one....lol

I think its a great idea and it will save the guests money and it means they get to drink what they want rather than just what is in the bar. The only thing is would there be somewhere cool to store it? Its OK for those drinking shorts etc but those with beers would probably want them cool rather than at room temperature. You could do the old bin trick with ice and water but if people leave drinks there and some other guest decides to drink them would that cause arguments? I think its going to be a great idea but there needs to be some careful planning and organisation to do it.
CommentAuthorpennieb-MrsRiley
That sounds perfectly reasonable; one of the things that we are doing is taking into account the weddings that we have been to in the last couple of years, remembering what we thought were bad points and trying to make sure our guests aren't left in that situation, and one of our concerns was the price of drinks because when my brother got married the hotel drinks prices were extortionate and so barely anyone was drinking - and as a result everyone had gone before the bar even closed! If you do get any queries about it, just explain to them that even if you were having it somewhere that was licensed you would not be paying for an open bar and that if they decide not to bring anything, then they can't complain that there wasn't anything to drink! I would agree with Dove as to the hot drinks or water though. x

we have a bar you can hire around here which has its own lisence i think and if you have more than 80 guests you get the hire free.... not sure about the lisence think though. can they not get a temp lisence? and then have a hire bar?
CommentAuthorHunny Bunny
I think it's a fab idea, our hotel has a bar so we wouldn't be able to take our own, however I am buying the guests mixed spirits as favours, so the first drink will be on us....

Gawd I would jump at this opportunity... Best of all worlds, you get the exact drink you want at a price you are happy to pay. At my h2b's son's wedding one round alone cost £82.63 (yes he is still going on about it 6mths later) We held a big party/BBQ in our house last summer and everyone bought their own booze (I know thats a bit different to a wedding) but some of the guys got together and those who drank beer -pedigree - all chipped in and got a barrel of beer from our local pub who supplied the tap etc you need, the lager group did the same and us on white wine agreed on a type and bought bottles together so that they all ended up in a big bin full of ice. We provided all the mixers (some still bought their own) and a few slabs of beer bought from a large shop which was cost co just in case and the spirit drinkers had their own stash. No one "nicked" other peoples drink and no one "checked" who had had a glass of vino more than them. Hope you do manage to persuade him as its a fab idea and the guests will prefer the pounds in their pockets.
CommentAuthorBeskiboo
As long as you give people notice that should be fine. Have you got a mate/do you have a Costco card you can get some good deals there on alcohol.
CommentAuthorBeskiboo

fab idea i'd defo go but i always mix my drinks so wud turn up wiv a boot full!! wkd's,larger, btle voddie! that wud keep me happy all night!! guests can always chip in together and buy in bulk?? and most people i know who go to any big event take a bottle ov spirits in there bag to keep costs down anyway!!!
CommentAuthor~*~ Becca ~*~

great idea if the venue allows it! the last wedding that i went to was redicuulously priced for a glass of wine! i had one and tha was it, call me a party pooper but i refused to pay their prices so yep, i agree BYO as long as there are mixers xx
CommentAuthorBeskiboo
Pretty steep for 12! Will have to tell my OH that he was moaning about the fact that a GNT cost £7.50 at the last wedding we went to.
CommentAuthorfuture-mrs-watson
Um am I the only one who thinks maybe it isn't a perfect idea? We're having our reception at my aunt's house and we're hiring a bar where the prices are the same as the local pub. We uhmed and ahed over the idea of BYOB but decided in the end, with that many people it would get over complicated. For starters you don't know how much or what everyone will bring. There's bound to be someone who forgets (or "forgets") and doesn't bring anything and ends up scrounging. Someone will bring too much and end up hammered (have a think - I bet out if 80 guests there's one who would!). We had the "yeah but it's our day and they'll be respectful and get pissed but not vomit in the wine bucket" conversation... but yeah, once they've started drinking, you know they would!
Just my perspective having spent 3 months going round and round with the same conversation with my H2B :)

Or hire a bar? They sort the license etc, and many don't charge you at all if there are above a certain no. of guests, often 80. Or it's about £100 to hire - compared to how much you'd pay even for just a couple of drinks for people that's cheaper.
CommentAuthorGemmagem1987
I would love this, drinks can be way over priced so why waste your money xx
