Can i be very very blonde here. What does a hung parliment actually mean, does it mean DC and GB have to make a decision between themselves as to who will run the country. This really confuses me :(

Any 2 of the 3 parties can unite....
Lib dems are the best people to unite as they have the least seats - but whoever they unite with will win!

    I cant believe this like!

basically none of the parties have the majority of the vote to form a full government, although cons are still in the lead labour needed one seat to declair hung parliment, they just did that,so god knows what happens now

I just don't understand how Brown can run the country when he has clearly lost so much support.
(I understand the legailities, just how he can do it in practice?)

Also, in a coalition, does that mean the cabinet will have lib dems in?

Yes, or the Conservatives can seak and alliance elsewhere, with smaller parties is Wales, Ireland and (unlikely) Scotland.

As to the whole conundrum about polling stations locking people out, the issue I observed when I went to vote was that they HAD split the lists up and had several people working them, but they had ordered them by voter number, not by name...meaning if everyone who went to vote at 8 or 9pm turned up without a polling card, because someone told them it was ok to go without etc which they didn't realise sooner, or for some insane form of protest (there are student who were discussing this) then it would have taken an enormously long time to find them on the list.

Dove, the reason they make it work is because most European countries have set terms, it isn't as easy to dissolve parliament and start again there. In the UK I think it may lead to trouble because they all know it could be over in a matter of weeks..

Labour asks Clegg. If Clegg says no, Tories can then ask him. But Labour get first shot.

It depends how arrogant he is, and how much his policies actually mean to his party. He will probably make certain demands on policies he absolutely wants kept, but I have to say he is in a much weaker bargaining position than they were predicting before the exit polls, as many Lib Dem seats have failed to materialise.

the tories are likely to join with the ulster unionists, if they do, I'm not sure an agreement between labour and Lib dems will be enough.

Paddy ashdown was on R4 this moring saying that Clegg undetook to go with the party with the most votes as thats what the country wants.

Now, back to work, naughty me :P

The whole reason for the election is so the votes matter. You would be saying the same if there was no majority and one person got in anyway. We have a hung parliment because we all (those who could anyway) voted, we all made our choices and this is the outcome. The government didn't say I know what we'll do we'll get them all to vote make it look like we're counting them and then declare a hung parliment. This is our doing.

Suz - I've just been reading on the BBC website, they've got an article on what you can and can't do. You need to use pencil I think if the votes are to be counted electronically, but since they aren't, you can use pen if you want!
