    Hi All,

I'm new here and hoping you can help? We have a wedding provisionally booked for next year but really want to look into the possibility of a barn/marquee wedding outdoors before we commit as this would be much more 'us'. Trouble is, I don't know where to start? I know that Marquees are quite expensive, are there many that would also do the catering etc? We are looking at the North Yorkshire area.

Does anyone have any experience of this type of wedding? Can anyone give me a rough idea of total cost for this type of thing? We have a venue in mind and know the cost of this so just need to know what were looking at with regards to a marquee, toilet hire, catering etc

Thank you all, and congratulations on your engagements! :)

    Hello, welcome and congratulations!

I have no experience with marquee weddings, but barn weddings are so popular these days and are so beautiful. Have you tried Googling 'barn wedding North Yorkshire'? I'm sure there are loads of gorgeous ones in your area.

    Hi Amanda and welcome :)

We've not booked a venue yet either as we are still scoping out different options. My advice would be to start by deciding on three things:

    1) The date of the wedding/time of year you're planning for.
    2) The total number of guests you are planning to have at the wedding (do a spreadsheet with everyone on it).
    3) The ceremony - do you want your ceremony to be separate in a church or registry office followed by a reception at a venue, or would you want to have both the ceremony and reception at the same venue?

After you have this info you can start looking at venues in your area. G00gling will bring up several different sites who will offer different options in your area. Find the ones that suit your ceremony, budget and guest numbers and contact them for further information and to have a look around. There are several barn venues near me that offer complete packaged with catering etc. included but they can be quite pricey. The different options kinda become clearer the more you look into it.

As a budgeting tip, and depending how much you are willing to arrange things yourself, a good cheap option can be village halls in your area. My sister is getting married next year at a rural village hall, with a hired hogroast etc. in the evening, and the venue hire was only £450 for the Friday, Saturday (day of the wedding) and sunday. However, she is putting a lot of time and effort into decorating etc. herself, so I guess it depends on what you're after for the big day.

    Hi Amanda!

We would have loved to do this - something like a massive log cabin and then have our evening suite as a log cabin for two as we loved the cabins!

It depends what you're looking for if you're prepared to organise a lot of it yourself and decorate barns yourself you can probably do it fairly cheap providing you're creative! This would be best if you were having a church wedding then you can just choose a local farm as they aren't licensed for ceremonies but I'm sure the farmers would jump at the idea of making money out a wedding especially in NYshire where there's a high population of farmers.

If you were looking for something where the venue arranges all there is somewhere fairly local depending where you live(near Guisborough or somewhere i think the venue is. They do an all in package organised in the type of a summer festival which sounded great but was £14000 for the package - much more than the standard package - have a think about the answer to the other brides suggestions and see what your options are :)

Wow thanks so much for your replies! It is a lot to think about. We are hoping for July/August next year and have guest numbers and even have a location we like for the reception. I'm just waiting for them to get back to me with a list of recommended suppliers but also trying to look myself for mobile bars/ice cream vans/catering vans and other entertainments etc.
Marquees are coming up far too expensive but the venue we like offers to decorate the barns and includes hay bales and bunting and fairy lights etc.
We would still need some tables and chairs hired from somewhere and entertainment
I will look into the village halls too, there is one not far from us which has lots of outside space too so that could be great!
Where are you all getting married?

We had a marquee but this was a permanent marquee by the manor house we hired so didn't cost extra, everything was included in the package. Quite a lot of venues have permanent marquees up in their grounds now.

We went to a friends wedding in Wales in June and I think it was s out the same in cost as you have to hire to tipi and then add on the cost of a kitchen too which bumps the price up by 5k! It was a beautiful wedding tho- they managed to make it very informal but lavish at the same time

I've gone full circle now and gone with my Original venue! I think the barn was going to work out too expensive, plus you can't trust the English weather, so we've decided to go back to the castle :-)
Thank you all for all your help! X

Oh a castle sounds lovely! Bit jelly - would have loved a castle wedding but the only one within a feasible area to us is just too pricey.

    Good luck with the planning!

We've not really looked at places yet as we are still chasing up the vicar to set our date properly! We'll start looking at some venues once we know the date is fixed, there are a couple of nice country hotels near us with good deals that we're considering.

Can't wait to go have a look around! x

We're getting married at D@nby C@stl3 on the way to Whitby, although its more of a marquee venue as only part of the castle still stands. Its a great mix of the two though :) xx
