Hi ladies! sorry if there is already a post like this but I'm looking to book my venue very soon (eeeeek) and I'm wondering if its the done thing to barter down or ask for freebies? I'm the first out of my friends to get married so they are no use lol.

The venue charges extra for a twinkly dance floor and drapes but there quite a bit so don't think il get those for free, the dance floor is either £300 ir £500 i can't remember (I'm hoping £300!!) and the drapes are £92 each and 3 are needed!!

any help will be great ladies! xxx

I got a discount with my venue I used my partner was in the forces I also made it clear that I have been looking at other venues! I managed to got the meal price cut down by a fiver a head!! Then also got all guests cheaper hotel rates not just a selected few! I got three hundred off the price of the room hire! I also got the bugger room not the smaller room! I also got 10 per cent off the whole drinks for the day and night! ;)

You can be cheeky! Oh and also the bridal suite for free with champers chocolate and flowers haha!
Oh and I also made them very aware I was only catering for 50 per cent of the evening guests but 75 per cent which they wanted haha x x

wifey to be that is amazing! I'm such a fairy when it comes to a sing for discounts for things, so if I'm having 100 night time guests would you recommend only catering for 50? i think I'm going to go and see it again and say I've been elsewhere so just having a final check. The drinks package is in with the meal so i might just go in and say this is my budget this is what i want will you do it!

ive yet to see my venue but i told them what i really wanted for my wedding and they came back with a few different ideas with a few different budgets in mind. i went with the 1500 but nothing is confirmed with that price so when i visit im going to see how much i can talk him into including in that price! lol i get nervous to haggle aswell but i think u have to when it comes to weddings and 2bh i think they expect it and have their prices high to start with for that reason so haggle as much as possible! worst they can say is no, good luck x

we were lucky, when we went to book venue it does say the full hotel is "exclusively yours" but on our date some keep fit also always book the same hotel every year meaning we couldnt hold the wedding in the ceremony room so we got 500 pounds off the package price, so with that weve paid our rooms for the bridal party to stay in the night before and the parentals to stay the night of the wedding. also a couple of other wee things too to make the cost up.

    xx

We took advantage of the fact that our hotel was just breaking into doing weddings - we got a choice of menu for our guests at no additional cost, and with the agreement that the final bill would be altered to reflect the actual cost of the choices made, as well as reducing our numbers for the evening to lower than had initially been agreed - we saved £270 just on those things. We also got the bridal suite thrown in, and a discounted flat room rate for all our guests - so no matter if they have a double or family room, it's the same price for them :) We're also in the process of getting the room rate lowered further because we have more than 10 rooms booked out!

My tip would be to ask "what if" type questions on a lot of things - in our case it was things ike how does offering a choice of menu affect the cost? I also didn't once sign a contract until very recently when we submitted our final numbers, as I wasn't prepared to agree to things that were subject to change lol. Once you have everything agreed with your venue, do follow up on the agreed discounts/offers - we reminded them that they said they would reduce the room rate further when we realised that we were at 14 rooms booked out :)

If you feel embarrassed about asking for a discount face to face, then ask by email - at least that way you have it in writing. I've had discounts on most things we are having and I do feel a bit shady but at the end of the day, every little helps.

wow, wifey2be do you remember what exactly you said to get all those discounts? Im in awe, great work!!
I think asking over email could be a good idea, especially as you'll be able to prove they agreed to it if you needed to. I'm in email chat with a few venues about costs of food and hire etc... i really dont think they would object to people asking for discounts, especially as most venues claim to offer "personal" plans, whats more personal than an individual discount?! ;)
    Good luck

Just say your budget is smaller then it is !! And also be cheeky say I need it to include this and that! haha

Also yeah like the other girls say if your too scared to ask face to face ask by email! I asked for a discount on the photo booth by email and I knocked 100 off it!

Sometimes the venue includes things that you don't really need! Lol so I was like no I don't want table flowers as I am doing centre pieces by myself at a fraction of the cost!

Say how much you like the venue but you need to make sure it will fit around your budget

Also I did say to them I was looking at other venues! He also did say they would give me a discount because most people book so in advance now I booked my venue 14 months before so I think that's pretty advance! Haha!

You just need to be cheeky and remember they want your business! Because it's not just about what your spending there but your what your guest spend there so if they are not willing to knock some money off they could lose out on grands and grands of business!!! Haha ;)

    Good luck girlies

    Anymore advice just ask ;) x x

Right... this is my plan, the quote i have on the venue i want is:

Room hire for the ceromony, breakfast and reception is £700, wedding food and drink package for 50 day time guests £50pp totaling £2500, evening buffet for 80 people at £12pp totaling £960 sooo total £4284 then extra for the dance floor which is £575 and the twinkle drapes £92 each and 3 are needed (do you think i could get these cheaper elsewhere???)

so this is how my email is going to go....

    Hi,

I recently visited your venue at the wedding fair, I was given an estimated cost for 50 day time guests, 80 night time and room hire but have missplaced it so is it possible to get another one emailed?

Im working on a budget of £4000 (SHOULD I KNOCK A BIT MORE OFF??? LOL) and the other venue i am in contact with have catered this to my needs by only charging for 50 night time guests rather than 80 and they have gave a discount on the price per head for the wedding breakfast, basically i wante dto check if you offer any form of discount as I love your venue but need to make sure it will fit my budget. We hope to book for july 2014 and are looking to place a deposit before the end of the year.

    kind regards

Always try for a discount NEVER be afraid to ask & keep your budget to at least £1,000 - £1500 under what you are willing to spend. I phoned the venue we wanted this week & told them my cooker blew up (it is true) and that we had a few unexpected unavoidable expenses so had to reduce our budget drastically or go elsewhere. I did sound a bit tearful on the phone, (they didn't need to know i'de been chopping onions) I now have welcome drinks of sparkling wine &/or fruit punch & canapes for 35, 3 course meal in a beautiful garden room incl 1/2 bottle wine a head & choice of 2 mains. We have been given the larger room for the evening incl dance floor & finger buffet for 60, the bridal suite & a room for my inlaws all for £2,700. The event manager even promised to arrange my fussy daughters favourite meal of cauliflower & brocoli cheese with gammon & a vegetarian dish of choice for my 14 year old bridesmaid. You get nothing if you don't ask, & rather than lose the booking & have an empty function suite they will do what they can to keep your booking.

    Well... Disappointed with the reply!

    Hi

Many thanks for your email. I have attached the estimated costs we gave you a few weeks ago. I'm affraid we can't guarantee prices for 2014 as of yet due to inflation/price increases. It may be that we have a special offer for 2014 but this wouldn't be decided until early 2013. We can still take a booking however it would be at the risk of the price being higher than your budget.

I am happy to hold a date until you have made a decision. Sorry we aren't able to guarantee this.

    Kind Regards

You will probably find they will offer discounts or free-bees nearer the date, when the new price list comes in in 2013, get in touch again. At the end of the day they want/need your business A no answer is only the first step to getting what you want. Good luck & keep trying, persistance does pay off in the end.

We have a date with the hotel on Thursday so will be trying to put on a brave face and just ask what discounts they can give us xxx

I get really nervous to ask for discounts and trying to haggle but I managed to get a discount for my cake and car, should have been £430 because it's travelling 40 miles to get to me but as it's a weekday and I was really interested in having this particular car he offered it to me for £360! That's a 3 tier cake however I want it, 2 trips in the car and staying around for pictures after! I've also got a photographer booked who has not long broke out into weddings, she's covering the arrivals, ceremony and aftershots for £110!
So at the moment I'm quite pleased :) x

We got a total of £1,100 off our deal with the venue! One thing to be aware of is the V.A.T, this apparently wasnt included in the prices in the brochure!! we took the deposit (£500)with us when we went to look around and talk to the manager and put it on the table so he could see it and that we were serious but when they came back with a figure (£9,100) which wasd a little more than i had estimated due to theV.A.T i put my best sad face on and told them how it was out of our budget and we would have togo home and look around, we got £5 pp off the main meal, £1.50 knocked off the bucks fizz, £1.00 knocked off the sparkling wine, £24.00 off per room for accomodation rates for quests, £2 pp off evening buffet, free light curtain for the evening, and £100 off the facility fee!!! Even if they say there is nothing they can do walk away, if they dont chase you you can always ring them back to book the next day but worth a go lol x
