Called up today to my local registrars to find out costs for the ceremony at a civil licensed location and its a whopping £400 for half an hour! Is it just me or is this a rip off even including traveling cost time to get there, plus an extra £70 for giving notice ! What does giving notice even entail?

I just checked out amounts for Edinburgh and my cost is gonna be £331.00. That includes notice, civil marriage fee, marriage extract and coming out to our venue. It's bonkers but thats the fee so gonna have to pay it and smile xx

Altogether ours is going to cost £524.. And thats this years prices... It goes up most Aprils and we've got 2 more Aprils until we get married :-( So its: £70 to give notice £450 for ceremony in licenced venue on a Saturday after 12pm £4 for marriage certificate
It is a rip off !
Basically you go there, they ask you questions together, questions separately to make sure you're not related or doing it for illegal purposes, and then they give you a ceremony pack to take home and fill in which states how you want your ceremony to go xxx

it makes me laugh on how the gov bang on about keeping families together etc... if they made it cheaper to get a civil ceremony more people might consider it! x
It's costing us nearly £600 to get married in our church!
CommentAuthorWhovianbride
Yeah ours is this years prices do will also go up mrsH-2B ! Its insane and at a civil licensed place they have already paid out for the licence and the office does not have to pay out for overheads for the venue! And mines for a midweek god forbid how much it would be for a saturday!

it is costly ours is £415 for afternoon ceremony on a friday! £70 to give notice and £10 for the certificate :/ we have paid to give notice and paid £150 deposit for the registra ! but thats just for them then add venue costs! its the one part i cant haggle and im not happy about it lol
One BIG day will lead to lots of little happy days !!
CommentAuthorAlexK
If they are travelling to you remember that they have to allow enough time each side for any delays. Travelling to and doing one wedding probably takes as much time as 3-4 ceremonies at the registry office. Think of the travel money as actually for the 'down time' rather than petrol and it seems more reasonable.
CommentAuthorhis duck
Ours was £35 to save date £70 notices £500 this years rate so will go up by time we get married and they not told us cost of certs etc. Civil ceremony should be a set price really with travel extra per mile ir something?!
For my area on a Saturday It's £35 to give notice £515 for the service at venue in 2015 and £10 for certificate, it is a rip off but my friends church wedding was more!
CommentAuthorLauraJo87
Ours was £70 to give notice, £50 to reserve the date and is £525 for the ceromony at the venue, which is about 50 yards away from the registry office...
The fee for doing at the registry office was £325, but you also had to pay £200 room hire to use there ceromony room (which is pretty cruddy).
I think it's pretty outrageous, but there aren't any cheaper alternatives (well, I know churches can be cheaper, or more expensive, but thts not for everyone) so they have a captive audience

mines £320. didn't know we had to pay to give notice either. its daylight bloody robbery!
dunno where they pluck these figures from,it should be a flat rate throughout the country. I wouldn't mind but the registar will only be there about 10 bleedin minutes as well

We paid £60 to give notice, and £284 for registrar to be there and have bought 3 marriage certificates at £4 each. In total £356. Didn't have to pay to save the date and room is included.
CommentAuthorKellyB81
We paid £70 to give notice, £450 for the registrars on the day and £4 per certificate - we had 2 on the day. I did think it was expensive but it was a bank holiday - made the most of it and made the ceremony last longer - may as well get something for our money! lol xx

CommentAuthormistaken4u
Had to pay £432 for the ceremony which includes two certificates, and £395 for the venue room hire which we keep all day. Still quite expensive
CommentAuthorKirsty
We looked at the cost of getting a registar to do the civil ceremony before our blessing at the venue (450 reg fees, plus 300 venue fees for the room, not including the 350 for our blessing in the chapel) or 180 to do it at the town hall the day before. We had to pay 25 to.reserve the date and 70 to give notice. As we see it as just signing papers we are.doing it the day before, the blessing is our 'wedding'. But it is a massive rip off!!
CommentAuthorbarbie86
Yup; ours currently charges £470, I expect that'll have gone up by next year too!
CommentAuthorMrsThomson2B
I am really lucky that with the discounts we got at our venue we dont have to pay ceremony room hire fee or that would have been an extra £600....lucjy escape I think lol xx
CommentAuthorLinzi-jo
I think they are making it more expensive as they know that a lot of people don't want to marry in a church anymore and would rather have everything under one roof, and its the one part of the wedding that you HAVE to have! lol Mind you, I am getting married in a church and it's costing me £700 plus £200 for a car to get from the church to the reception venue so no matter how you do it, it will be expensive! xxx
Got together 14.02.2008
Got engaged 31.12.2010

Ours is £525.50 for this year (for the registra to come to venue) and we have two increases to go yet :-(
Then we have to pay to use the venue room both for the ceremony and the reception/breakfast which is another £800 but thats included in the £3k total for the venue bill

Ours is costing £470 this year for them to do our wedding at our venue on a Thursday, for 2 people inc travel & notices & 2 extras certificates. We could of has a church wedding for 1/2 price as my mum & dad are religious, church wardens & we get on well with the vicar but my hubby to be doesn't believe & doesn't want to be a hypocrite. But id spend what I saved on décor anyway lol
CommentAuthorMrsK2b
We paid £70 to give notice and £469 for the registrar to come to our venue.
But that was last years prices and they do go up every April so we wont find out the total price until August when we see them 6 weeks before.
That's normal prices to be honest.
Cant wait until I become Mrs K
CommentAuthorMrsMoran
This is part of the reason why me and h2b are doing it in registry office, but then we are lucky that our registry office is in such a beautiful building so would have picked it anyway. Ours is £200 total, for the room and obviously registrar is already there so no registrar costs. And then £70 to give notice xxx
CommentAuthorGlitterfairy
Our registrars were £375
Our wedding day - 6 October 2012
CommentAuthorHannah22
Our registrars were something like £520? and then we had to give notice so that was another £70, I was a bit miffed when you find out the ceremony only lasts around 25-30 mins! but I live in west sussex so I'm not surprised at the cost!
CommentAuthorLlosa
We payed 530 for our church fees and what not

£35 each to give notice and £365 for the registrar. I was very shocked too, but Surrey seems to be [surprisingly] cheaper then a lot of counties. And that was the cheapest one, purely because our wedding is not on a weekend or bank holiday.
CommentAuthorJSB&PSB
Rennie1989 i'm getting married in surrey too but next year and seems to be going up quite a bit in price it's costing us 463 + 35 for the notice
Less then a year till i marry my wonderful man
CommentAuthorRennie1989
JSB: The prices increase every April, but that's a massive jump. Are you getting married on a weekend/bank holiday?
CommentAuthorChristinaB38
sounds about right ours for 2015 is just short of £500, think it varies slightly in different regions
CommentAuthorThe-Future-Mrs-B
We are paying £295 for an enhanced ceremony at the registry office plus £70 to give notice plus £4 for the certificate (nothing to book our date in advance), we did look round at venues but it was going to cost £450 for the registrar plus notice and certificate pls the ceremony room, we felt this was to much of an expense when we have a small budget. The registry office is nice though and has gardens for photos'.
CommentAuthorLauraT41
We have paid £50 to secure our date, £15 booking fee for the giving notice meeting + £70.00 at the meeting then £435 for the ceremony which is slightly more expensive because its on a Sunday , then the £4 for the marriage cert - lots of numbers and no getting out of any of them :( x This was all before we paid for the ceremony room at the venue ! x
CommentAuthorHelenW
Ours is about 500 for the ceremony. 50 deposit and 70 to give notice. X

Ours is about £350 ish (not sure). I know the ceremony is £250, but we have also had to pay a £35 "admin" fee (just to speak to them on the phone!), and we had to pay £70 to our local council who gave us the authority
