Hi Ladies, I have my dress which fits perfectly but i need about 2-3inches taken up at the bottom. When i rang my local bridal store where the dress came from they told me that i wouldnt need to come in until 4 weeks before the wedding and then they would sort out any alterations then. is that enough time? It doesnt seem very long but then i dont know how long it takes to alter the hem of a wedding dress.. maybe im worrying over nothing! Have any of you brides had a similar alteration and how long did it take? The dress lady also couldnt give me any rough price guide which is a little frustrating!

hmm...i have absolutely no experience but i know myself i would think that was cutting it too fine...i'd rather that time was at least twice as long - maybe they're just not worrying too much about it and have other stuff on but i'd play it safe, get it done earlier, just in case something happened that delayed things! maybe i'm just a worry-pot!!

If it's only to take up the length and the bottom of the dress is fairly uncomplicated I would imagine it shouldn't take too long. I've had my first fitting for alterations but I'm having a lot of work done as it was about 8 inches too long and has a weird hem line and also had the train shortened and narrowed. I will be having another fitting for the alterations to the top of the dress which needs pulling in an inch or two as well. That's why I've had mine so early.
I must be crazy giving myself only 6 months!

that is plenty of time!
my dress fitted perfectly but the netting on the bottom was a bit too long about 1 half inch. i went in about a month before and as i had it on she cut the netting with scissors whilst i had the dress on and it was done in about 2 minutes!!
what sort of hem is it? i would say it is perfect time x

oh really? oh that's ok then - ignore my message, am a panicker!! ;)
i have just seen your dress and because of the material they will need to pin it up and then take it up but it wouldnt too too long!
both of my bm dresses were too long and had to be taken about about 6 inches and she did both dresses in 2 weeks so dont worry xx

I think they probably wont want to do it until closer to the time incase you need other alterations done - weight changes etc I'm a bit concerned about mine.. rightly so I had to order my size now. I've no intention of being this size when I wear the dress but for peace of mind I've gone with it. My dress looks to me like it would be quite difficult to alter, thankfully I wont need any length taken off as it's a fancy hem and makes me think it'd cost a bit :( x

how many sizes do you want to go down to the size of your dress? did you explain that to the shop? as surely they will be able to alter it xx
CommentAuthormadhen
how many sizes can you go down realistically?? is there a limit of two or anything or does it just depend on the cut of the dress and that sort of thing?
CommentAuthorJill
well they said 3 sizes, I did explain and I know they just dont want me to be left with a dress that's too tight... I'm going to try to phone tomorrow and ask if they can at least go a size smaller than I am, then it's not too much pressure and less to alter... I only ordered yesterday, last appt so they cant have ordered yet. Yes - that's definitely what I'm going to do :)
If you have a look - mori lee 3111 - I'm not sure how they'd do it? x

My dress shop said I go back 6 weeks before for the fitting for any alterations

3 sizes, wow wouldn't have thought that! yeah if you only ordered yesterday it'll be grand :) :) wow it's a beautiful dress, love the shape!

i thought they could alter dresses down by 2 sizes and let out by 1 xx

Mine needed taking up a few inches - but finished up having it done just at the front so that I had a slight train at the back. It also needed taking in as it was still a bit big at the top, and the straps needed tightening. I had an appointment 4 weeks before the wedding - and even when the straps had been taken in too much (couldn't get the dress up lol but not funny at the time), it was still done in time. So don't worry - they know what they're doing x

i'm having mine taking in at the sides, bodice and possibly taken up and I'm going 5 weeks before the wedding for my first fitting (when they pin it up etc) and then back again I think 3 weeks before. Then I'll go to pick it up either 2 weeks or 1 week before the actual day. I don't mind so long as its right when I get it back xx
