I got an email back from a dj that we have been in negotiations with, i asked him how many songs he would accept as requested prior to the event from me, now 90% of my guest list listens to the same rock/metal/indrustial music i do and would hate if most of the evening was chart music. this was the reply i got "I can say for certain that it can be very hard to keep guests entertained and on the dance floor if playing entirely from a client’s request list."
Am i being a diva or would it make more sense for me to give him a massive list of about 100 songs to play rather than about 20 so he knew what else we would actually dance to rather than playing rhianna or one direction or kanye west all night. coz if he did that i know my guests would probably leave and i would be so upset. We dont have your usual taste in music in the slightest and im worried that im just going to keep ending up with dj's that dont want to play the music we like and only the music they like all night. this is the 4th time this has happened btw

Ask him what else he intends to play, wedding Dj's should play a bit of everything because all sorts of people are at weddings, the oldies and the kiddies etc. So I imagine that's what he intends to do?
That said, our DJ will play anything we ask him to so you might be better off finding someone else!

We picked about 40 songs - 20 'must plays' and 20 'if you have time to play's', and we also had an endless list of 'do not play under any circumstances'. We also had our first dance song which was followed by a specific song. Our guests were able to 'pre-order' up to 5 tunes each, which we then had the facility to agree or veto, as we saw fit. By doing this, he got a really good idea of the kind of music we wanted. He did a great job and the dance floor was packed all night. Personally, I'd say if he is being this inflexible, I'd be considering a different DJ.

If you know the kind of music your guests listen to then he should take notice although I've been to a lot of weddings where there are no requests because they are afraid of clearing the dance floor. We are hiring a jukebox because we didn't want a DJ deciding what music came next - in my experience they always play 90s dance around 11:30pm!
Hello-kitty, your playlist is very much like ours. I'm not at the pc at the mo but when I am I shall post ours.

Just a thought if you have all the music that you would liked played and you think your dj might not play the music you like could you put music on your i pod and have it played through some speakers as a back up plan if you need to sack our dj on the night or dont bother with a dj and higher some lights and just play your music
CommentAuthorhello-kitty
The only thing with doing it ourselves is the insurance and decent speakers etc. i cant see why he's being so picky, we're paying him and its our night (guests and us as a couple)

In certain circumstances I can kind of see where he's coming from, we have DJ friends who really dislike being given a numbered list by the organisers, because just because it's the organiser's favourite music doesn't necessarily mean it'll work in a wedding disco format, even if the guests are all into the same stuff. To be honest, unless you can find a DJ who has an interest in your type of music, I think you may be better off doing your own playlist off a laptop / ipod, without the knowledge of the music I'd imagine it would be difficult to mix / crossfade expertly and respond to the crowd, or even know which songs to play in what sequence, and if you give him a rigid list, he's just being a person shaped lappie anyway!
Having said that, as you said, it's your wedding, you have final say in what gets played! I'd definitely either find someone else more sympathetic to your musical taste or just do it yourselves. Alternatively, if your guests are all into the same stuff and any of them are capable, you could always rope a few of them into doing some sets themselves? x

When I first read your top post, I could sort of see where the DJ was coming from...
But having read your playlist, I think you have a great selection of songs, some of which would definitely get me and my friends up on the dance floor! I love summertime by mcr, was debating having it as our first dance song.
Send him the list and see what he says. If he's a professional, he will listen to some of the more obscure songs anyway so will know when to fit them in. We are having a mixture of band and DJ, the band have said that the do have a standard set list for weddings which they prefer to play, but will email us a copy over so that we can see what we want and veto or swap any. They will also learn our first dance song,'last night on earth' by green day which is great. Or could you ask to see a playlist incorporating at least some of your songs? At least then you will be able to veto.
I agree though that if he is being this inflexible, he might not be the sort of DJ you want. Xx

If I got a dj that refused to play what i wanted at my wedding when im paying him, id be telling him to sling his bloody hook. You're paying him for his service, if you want his opionion Im sure you will ask for it
Id be outraged if I was told I couldnt have too much Muse or James etc. I think he's be sacked on the spot if he dared say Rhianna at me as well haha

I'm just frustrated with it, i have had cds that i made as a teen that are titled songs i want at my wedding and theres about 10 of them and it's just a bit meh that they are being a bit annoying about it. i get it they want the guests to be happy but even so, i have stupidly varied tastes as you can see from the list but i also know what i have been planning for years and i think i will be disappointed if it doesnt live up to that. my fault entirely but hey..... i know what i want!

I'd get him to make up a play list based on your music and what he thinks will work. If it's ready terrible I'd find someone else.
CommentAuthorLegoWife
I don't think DJ's are used to people with varied tastes lol, I suppose most people seem to stick to one genre.
Ours is going to have a job, H2B is strictly 60's 70's and a bit indy whereas I'm more about rock/metal and obscure Asian music which I don't imagine is going to mix together well!
But at the end of the day as long as me and h2b have something to dance and have a good time to, screw everyone else! It's our wedding lol!

My dj has said no more than 80 requests but we are having him from the ceremony. I have asked for the likes of Frank Sinatra, Doris Day and Dean Martin for dinner as I have a vintage theme. The rest I can cope with variety as long as there are some good rock tunes and I have banned Lady Ga Ga and cheesy party songs but will allow Barbie Girl for my niece as its our song. I think the key issue is that you have paid for your DJ and it's your wedding so he needs to be mo flexible than 20 songs especially as you have a good mix.
I can't wait until 29/06/2013

I would personally be looking for another dj. Ours asked us at the beginning if we wanted our own playlist and we said yes. I have picked every song with some help from friends and family and our dj has been more than helpful. You know the type of music that your guests listen too so surely you should pick the music x

Hmmmmm its strange when you are paying that they have denied you the playlist that you want at your wedding. Ours has just emailed me back saying I can send as many songs as I want to him and he will tailor the playlist to suit our exact requirements as (in his words) 'its our party'. I hope you find a DJ that has been as helpful as ours has been.x

hello- kitty Some of your songs i dont think i've heard of but then again as i said before i'm useless at remembering names and that but no the song when it comes on if the dj was telling me that i couldnt have certain songs then i think i would personally be looking elsewhere after all what is the point of playing music that no one is gona get up and dance to and its your wedding day so you can have what you want. xx

You guys have definitely given me some ideas, we have a very eclectic music taste and dont want rubbish being played. I love 40's-80's music and rock. I was thinking of getting a laptop dj and just getting a playlist for him to download of whatever and then do a few requests here and there. also thinking of doing the 5 songs when you rsvp and then picking a certain amount of those to add to the list Plenty of time to plan though :D xxx

Me, H2B, our kids and my family and family friends are all into rock/heavy metal so i have discussed the following with our DJ: We are going to put loads of our favourite songs onto a USB stick and for the first hour (7-8PM) it is going to be our 'rock hour' and then from 8pm onwards we're going to have a mixture of the classic party tunes, a bit of 80's etc with one of our songs thrown into the mix every 3 or 4 songs. That way you keep everyone happy!
